When I started reading this series I thought this was book 2 and thus read, Jake Drake, Bully Buster before this one. But this is actually book one in the Jake Drake quadrilogy. I was enjoying that book so much I mentioned it to my son, and he has since read to me both Jake Drake, Bully Buster and Jake Drake, Know-It-All and is currently reading me book three in the series. My son is in grade 9, and yes, these books are below his reading level. But he has been dealing with some serious bullying for a number of years now. Most of it instigated by the same ring leader, a boy that would give Link Baxter, Super Bully, more than a run for his money. My son loved the first story he read and asked if we could read all four together. And even though the other Jake Drake books do not deal with bullying, we plan on reading them together in short order.

Six years ago, I discovered the works of Andrew Clements. I was instantly hooked and have now read almost 25 books from his masterful pen. Many consider him the ‘master of school stories’, and I would agree. I have a dual form of dyslexia and did not learn to read until after grade 7. So I never read ‘school stories’ when I was young. That combined with having my own school aged children has instilled a great appreciation for the genre and specifically for the works of Andrew Clements. Clements passed away in 2019 his last novel was The Friendship War, which is another excellent volume. He writes amazing stories for children, but they are also stories that any of us can learn from. Back then I set the goal of reading all of his works, but as my own children have outgrown these books and they had slid by the wayside. I have now returned to them yet again. I have read 1 a week over the last several weeks and plan to do so for a while yet.

This is another great read in a really fun series. These are books I wish we had read with my son years ago. It is an excellent read. The description of this book is:

“Jake Drake is excited about Despres Elementary School's first science fair. He wants to win the grand prize: a brand-new Hyper-Cross-Functional Bluntium Twelve Computer System. And he really wants to beat the third grade know-it-alls, Marsha McCall and Kevin Young. The trouble is, to beat the know-it-alls, Jake has to become a know-it-all himself. And he may just lose more than he wins.”

In this story Jake really, really, really wants to win the science fair and the grand prize new Computer, a Hyper-Cross-Functional Bluntium Twelve computer system from Wonky’s Super Computer Store. It is a system Drake has had his eye on for a while. Jake learns some lessons long the way. One is that he prefers to work with a friend, have fun and learn. Second is that even though he and his partner did all the work on their projects, a lot of parents helped their kids. And Third if he focused just on winning and not the why and how it can cease to be fun. Overall this was a wonderful little read. Both my son and I loved it. 

This is another excellent offering from the masterful pen of Andrew Clements. This is a great early chapter book. It is excellent book for young readers, and for those of us who just love a great story! And It will leave you wondering what happens in the final 2 Jake Drake adventures.

This is a short picture book on Saint David of Wales, or Sant David Dewi, it was originally published in 1995, with reprints in 1997, 1998, and 2000. There may have been future printings but the one I read was from 2000. A few years ago I read Dewi Sant: St David Patron of Wales, by J.B. Midgley which started my interest in this saint. And my son found out this is the patron saint of his school Saint David’s in Waterloo, Ontario so I decided to look for more books about him. This was the first that I have read in that further study.

Description on the back of the book:

“Every year on the first of March, the people of Wales celebrate St David's Day. Who was David? Why do we remember him? This story describes a boy who had very special gifts. As he grew up, he became famous for his preaching and his miracles. Even today, we remember the good deeds and wise words of David, Patron of Wales.”

The book is listed as 16 pages but I count 13 pages that are either full page illustrations or illustrated pages with text overlay. The pages are done in a variety of styles as far as the illustrations and artwork. Including one illustration inside an oval on a full page. The illustrations are a unique style. The book does not glamorize the saint or the people of the time. It is an interesting little bio of this saint, clearly geared for young readers but well enough written that in my mid 50’s I enjoyed it.

I am glad I tracked this down and thankful I gave it a read. I look forward to reading more about this saint, his life and his lasting influence. I can easily recommend this for home, school, or church use.

I have read 27 books by Declan Finn and 26 of them in the last 8 months. I have greatly enjoyed books in three other series. This is one of two in the Convention Killings series that I am aware of. These were published a decade ago. Both the Saint Tommy and the White Ops series are greatly entertaining, and I cannot wait for the Pius trilogy of 5 books to be back in print. I am now working through his back catalogue. The first story in this series, It Was Only On Stun!, was a very entertaining story, it had a fan fiction feel, but also a bit of a spoof and homage. The description of this story is:

“After the events of "A Pius Stand," Sean A.P. Ryan has spent the last year in Italy, keeping his head down and his mouth shut. But now, he has been brought out of his exile for one big job: security at the world's largest science fiction convention, WyvernCon. His mission? To keep the peace between two factions warring over the "coveted" Hubble Awards -- the Tearful Puppies and the Puppy Punters. Even though Sean has a bad feeling about it, he takes the job, expecting a relatively quiet weekend. Unfortunately, Sean soon learns that he has a bounty on his head. Every bounty hunter and mercenary within shouting distance of the internet is descending on the convention, each of them set on killing him. And his enemies list is long enough to cover half the free world, and most of the world still in chains. If that wasn't bad enough, the first casualties of the War of the Puppies happen at the convention. Could it have been one of the Puppies, who are all armed and dangerous? Or could it have been one of the Punters, who claim pacifist tendencies, and fanatical devotion to their cause? With the bodies piling up, and the attacks becoming more frequent, Sean has to discover who wants him dead, and who the true Puppy killer is, before all of WyvernCon goes down in flames.”

There are different covers for book one in this series, one matches style and design of this book). I am not a fan of those covers. But the Red Shirt coloured cover with a name sticker feels perfect for the series and this one should have been a Gold Shirt. 

This story was just as entertaining as the first in the series. It is easy to figure out who some of the characters are meant to be in real life. And the franchises presented and the conflict at cons between franchises and fandoms is well written. I believe this is the seventh volume Finn published, and there were 6 between the first in this series and this one. From my reading of this one some of that information is alluded to in this volume. As is the author and events of A Pius Trilogy. The number of subplots yet again exceeds even the novel Clear and Present Danger, and the number of characters Piers Anthony’s Bio of a Space Tyrant series. There are so many characters, so many plots, and at the centre of it all Sean Ryan. Sean is back doing a convention because the pay check has made it worthwhile. He call sin friends and allies and is determined that no one will be collateral damage because of the contract on his life. The ending of this story and how Sean turns the tables on the person who took out the contract on his life is like a precursor to Tommy Nolan. Sean and his descendants appear in other books and series, and they are excellent. 

This was a greatly entertaining story with numerous twists and turns! I was really impressed with this offering from the pen of Finn. It is a great read, and it leaves you wanting more. Another volume from Finn’s masterful pen that I can easily recommend!

I somehow ended up with books 1 and 13 from this series on my eReader. This is the first novel I have read by Ken Bruen and I believe I have not read any of his works in anthologies. I could be mistaken about that but I doubt it. This was an interesting first foray into a series. The series currently sits at 16 novels and 2 shorter works. I think I picked up the first based on the plug from a different author I had been reading. And this one for the same reason but I believe, at the time of writing this his website does not resolve and I do not find much in the way of social media. There are a few different descriptions of this volume available online, two of them are:

“From Ireland’s most lyrical crime fiction writer, The Ghosts of Galway pits “perpetually falling Irish angel Jack Taylor” (Mystery Scene) against a dangerous band of heretics.

As well-versed in politics, pop culture, and crime fiction as he is ill-fated in life, Jack Taylor is recovering from a failed suicide attempt. In need of money, Jack has been hired as a night-shift security guard. The description of the series states:

In some ways this reads like J.D. Kirk’s Bob Hoon Series but without any redeeming character traits or actions. The story is dark, and violent. It has its moments as far as humour goes. I am gonna go back and give book 1 a try and see if the story has potential there, if not, I will be done with the series. 

If I had already not picked up another book by Bruen I likely would not have. Maybe it was starting this far in the series but an ex copper who does lines of coke to go beat up a guy is not really my thing. I am hoping book 1 will shine a different light on Jack Taylor. For right now it feels like he took a dive like Michael Garibaldi but has sunk much much deeper! 

If this was book 1 I would have given it 2 or 3 stars at most, because I am jumping in I give it the benefit of the doubt and give it 4. I am hesitant to read more in the series or by the author. But I will give both a second chance on The Guards.

Several months before reading this I encountered the works of J.D. Kirk I also discovered that Kirk publishes children’s books as Barry Hutchison, and other adult fiction as Barry J. Hutchison. I have read 20 stories published under the Kirk Name and I am now branching out to the ones under the Hutchinson names, this is the 7 under that name. He is coming up on 175 books across the three pen names. If I had known that or I might not have picked up this first one. But I am very thankful I did. Friends call me a ‘completionist’ in that when I find an author I like, I try to read everything they have published. I have enjoyed all I have read from his pen and this one was no different.

The description of this story is:

This story is an early chapter book. Or middle grade reader. It has 19 chapters and numerous illustrations by Lee Cosgrove. This illustrations are not scary, but I could absolutely see the story scaring some children. My son would love this story. My youngest daughter would not be happy if I let her read it, and might not sleep well for a while. However that being said, kids that like being scared and can handle the fright factor will love this story and I assume series. It is less dark than some of the goosebumps stories and is even less dark than what I have read from Hutchison’s Invisible Friends series.

The story is very humorous in places, and though I did not laugh out loud there were more than a few chuckles along the way. Every time the word Bearvis came up you picture him there on stage in Vegas. He constant way Veron refers to Lisa Marie as his step sister, and she never makes the ‘step’ distinction. The neighbourhood bully getting his own. How many times does Vernon faint or nearly faint. How many ways can a flick of a wand go badly. And Can Vernon and his sister Lisa Marie save the town from the Night of the Living Dead? To find out you will need to read this darkish tale! 

This book marks the 29th offering from Hutchison I have read in the last 10 months, under the three names he publishes under. They have all been entertaining reads. Many an easy 5/5 stars, this a very solid 4. This story was a very entertaining read, but with the ending it will leave you desperate for the next instalment, and it appears to just be a trilogy so three and done. A good read from the pen of Barry Hutchison, aka Barry J. Hutchinson aka J.D. Kirk.

It has been seven years since I read a book by Rebecca Cantrell. Back in 2015 I read a few of the Order of the Sanguines series co-written with James Rollins, that was shortly before a major work project and then a switch in jobs and her works fell off my radar. After reading this excellent collection of short stories I have already picked up 2 of her other volumes, and plan to read all of her published works, both those under this name and the two under the pen name, Bekka Black. This collection of stories ia wonderful. It shows the breadth and depth of Cantrell’s writings. When Rebecca first tweeted about this volume being in the works I was instantly hooked. And the collection did not disappoint! 

The description of the collection is:

About the Author

I can easily say I enjoyed each of the stories in this collection. My son saw me reading it and asked about it so I described the premise as outlined by Cantrell and he asked if he could read it. I said to wait and see as it is mentioned that each story gets darker. As Cantrell states in the Introduction:

“Since Santa gives better presents to nice kids than naughty ones, the link was inescapable: I wasn’t good enough. How else could I explain that the kid down the street got a bicycle from Santa and I got a packet of construction paper and an orange? I knew my parents didn’t have enough money for fancy gifts, but surely Santa could afford to splash out. Since he saw everything, he had to know that I needed some new toys. If he didn’t bring them, I must be doing something wrong. I was too naughty. Even if that little kid with the bike was a bully, somehow, he was nicer than I was. The year I learned that there was no Santa Claus I felt so relieved.”

and

“I hope you enjoy my takes on the music and they bring some cheer and fear to your holiday experiences. For each story, I provide a link to the version of the song that inspired it so you can bop along and wonder if Christmas music is the best therapy or the worst. Each story does indeed get darker. I read the volume over new years and it was a great read to ring in the New Year. As mentioned this is an excellent collection. I can easily recommend it for mature readers. I told my son maybe in a year or 2. This is a collection of 5 great stories that I can easily recommend!
