A Foul Christmas - Catholic Teen Books

This book is a little different. Like the earlier volume, The Christmas Lights, it was a story written in parts, serially. It is a very fun and and a deeply moving story. It was sort of an experiment. We are informed that:

“A Fowl Christmas" is a collective short story written sequentially in individual pieces by seven Catholic Teen Books authors and originally presented aloud on Reading with Your Kids Podcast.”

And the description of the story is:

“Mom's stranded out of town, Dad injured his leg, and Derrick's family Christmas feast is in jeopardy. With the help of his brother, Blake; his friend, Grace; and a bargain involving some chickens and the old ladies down the street, maybe Derrick can still pull off this holiday meal. Or maybe it'll all go up in smoke!”

We are further informed in the introduction that:

“Catholic Teen Books is a collaborative website of authors who all write faith-based fiction for middle school and high school teens. In December of 2020, many of the Catholic Teen Books authors wrote a collaborative story, “The Christmas Lights,” for Christmas that was read on Jedlie’s Reading with Your Kids Podcast, on Christmas Eve.

In 2021, Catholic Teen Books authors collaborated on what became “A Fowl Christmas.” Jed again gave us a prompt, and one by one each of us wrote a section as the story was passed from author to author. Only the final author knew the entire story until we read it for the podcast.

We enjoyed these projects and wanted to share these fun, short stories with others. Proceeds from this e-book will be donated to Cross Catholic Outreach.”

This is a great short story it is very moving. It is a story about family, friendship, community, serving, and just maybe a Christmas miracle. Derrick along with his brother Blake and his best friend Grace are trying to save the family’s turn to host Christmas Dinner. Their mother is away and delayed getting back, their dad is laid up with a leg out of commission. Their dad also needs a new gig as he had to close his restaurant. Grace has some shocking news as well. They are blackmailed into trading their dad’s prize chicken’s. An evening at a soup kitchen a lot of misadventures including saving chickens from a burning barn. The story is at times laugh out loud funny, and at times nearly brought me to tears. And Turner’s reference to T-Rex brings to mind her amazing unSPARKed series.

Help might come from the most surprising of places. And maybe a miracle; as some unsavoury characters have vanished in the wind. But to find out the details you will need to read this excellent short story. I can easily recommend this book and the previous volume, in the same style, The Christmas Lights.

This book is a little different. It is deeply moving and a wonderful read. It was sort of an experiment. We are informed that:

“The Christmas Lights is a collective short story written sequentially in individual pieces by seven Catholic Teen Books authors and originally presented aloud on Reading with Your Kids Podcast.”

And the description of the story is:

“When a blizzard puts Camilla and her family in jeopardy, she must brave the snowstorm to get help. Lost and alone, all she can do is search for Christmas lights, which is either a direction from her dead grandma or a delusion. Help does come, in completely unexpected ways.”

We are further informed in the introduction that:

“Catholic Teen Books is a collaborative website of authors who all write faith-based fiction for middle school and high school teens. In December of 2020, a friend approached us about writing a collaborative story for Christmas that would be read on his podcast, Jedlie’s Reading with Your Kids Podcast, on Christmas Eve.

Several members of our group jumped at the chance to join in this unique experience. Jed gave us a prompt, and one by one each of us wrote a section as the story was passed from author to author. Only the final author knew the entire story until we read it for the podcast.”

This is a wonderful story, very moving.  The story is set in December of 2020. Camilla and her family are travelling to spend Christmas with her grandfather, who is now a widow. Camilla had big plans for 2020 and they all went off the track pretty quick. Remote learning, masks, face shields, no sports and more all wreaked havoc on her plans. After an accident can she find the strength to do what it takes to try and save her family. As she realized her previous complaints were really small matters, she prays and hopes for help.

Help might come from the most surprising of places. But to find out you will need to read this excellent short story.

Saving the Statue of Liberty - Andrea Jo Rodgers - Saint Michael the Archangel Academy Book 2

Saving the Statue of Liberty

I loved this follow up book. I really like the concept of Saint Michael the Archangel Academy series. Book 1, Saving Mount Rushmore, was a fun read and book 2 is even better. I read the first book because authors I enjoy were recommending it. I read book 2 because I thoroughly enjoyed book 1. This is a good read. I have really enjoyed both books, and now have them in the ‘to be read’ pile of books to read with my children. I think my youngest two will love these books, and I hope there will be more books in the series. In my review of book 1 I stated that this is: “ a fast-paced adventure. In some ways it reminds me of The Relic of Perilous Falls by Raymond Arroyo Will Wilder Book 1, and also the 39 Clues Series. This story focuses on using the gives we have from god for God.” And that become even more relevant in book 2.

This book is a mix of adventure, faith, learning, and history. And being completely honest the Saint Michael the Archangel Academy is a place I would love to attend, as a student or faculty. In this adventure the children of team Liberty learn that there is in fact a dark mirror of the Saint Michael Academy. And that the mission they had in book one spoiled a test for Devlin Black and his crew. And this time, the teams are being pitted against each other with both getting the same clues. This time John has found a journal from his great-great-great-Uncle, a George Jenkins. Team Liberty follows the rules. They try to do the right things and do them for the right reasons. Where Team Mischief from Maleficus Academy brake all the rules and only want to cause problems, mayhem and mischief. Thus, living up to their names.

In this book we learn a lot about Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty. History of immigration in America. And we learn about being part of a team and doing what is right, even if it is hard, and even if it means helping an enemy. The two teams are following the exact same clues. Who will be the first to solve the clues and will Liberty of Mischief be the victors? To find out you will need to read.

This is a great middle grade read, with an excellent lesson. It will provide a history lesson, wrapped in a mystery, that is uncovered by teamwork. You will fall in love with the characters and enjoy the journey. And I for one look forward to further adventures of team liberty.

I number of authors I read and appreciate have given this book top marks. Therefore, I decided I needed to give it a read. It was a fun read. And I have already slotted it in the list of books to read with my son. It is a fast-paced adventure. In some ways it reminds me of The Relic of Perilous Falls by Raymond Arroyo Will Wilder Book 1, and also the 39 Clues Series. This story focuses on using the gives we have from god for God.

What young child does not crave adventure, meaning, and purpose. And that is what the kids at the Saint Michael the Archangel Academy get. They become members of a team, they train, they solve mysteries, and in this book they are trying to unravel clues so that they can prevent a crime. John is new to the team this summer. His parents have gone overseas, his younger brother is at his grandparents. So, John heads west believing he is spending the summer at his aunt’s ranch. He joins team Liberty and they start a mission right away. They are charged with figuring out what Devlin Black and his crew are up to. Team Liberty must figure out the clues and stop the would-be vandals.

This book jumps right in with the action. And once the plot is rushing forward, we are given hints and clues to piece together the back story. The characters are great. You cannot help but find yourself cheering on team Liberty. The book is a great mix of faith, action, and learning about history. It is hard to believe the main events take place over just 2 days. And the story leaves you wanting the next adventure of the staff and students from Saint Michael the Archangel Academy.

And excellent read for middle grade students, or even young adults. Well enough written that this 50-year-old loved it. A great beginning to what I hope will be a long, long series.
