Prayer of the Day A Saint Michael Prayer

A Saint Michael Prayer
Prayer of the Day

Prayer of the Day A Saint Michael Prayer

St. Michael, glorious archangel, you know well the
wiles of the tempter. Defend me, protect me, and
pray for me, O prince of the heavenly host, that
my faith in God remains strong , my hope in Him
provides comfort, and my love for the Almighty
leads me to salvation.
Amen.

Holy Bible - English Standard Version Catholic Edition - Augustine Institute

In the summer of 2024 I found out that the church in England, Scotland, and Wales was getting a new lectionary. One based on the English Standard Version Catholic Edition. I started looking for an Anglicised edition, one that used British or in my case Canadian Spelling rather than the American. I could not find one. So I picked up this volume to be able to start reading the ESV-CE version of the bible. My children took a look at it and my youngest daughter has this same edition now, and my son had the blue paperback edition.

The description of this bible states:

“The Holy Bible, English Standard Version® Catholic Edition is an essentially literal translation in elegant, contemporary English. The ESV-Catholic Edition emphasizes word-for-word accuracy, literary excellence, and depth of meaning. This Catholic Edition was reviewed in accord with the norms of Liturgiam authenticam and abides by Catholic hermeneutical principles. It was granted the Imprimatur by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India in 2018 and was approved for liturgical use by the Vatican s Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in 2019. This gray hardcover edition offers readers a beautiful Bible, which is ideal for anyone who desires to study, read, and pray the Word of God.”

It highlights the following features:

Gray with gold foil stamp (cover and spine only)
Anti-scuff matte lamination
Navy and gold ribbons
1,232 pages
8 pages of maps printed after last text page
Printed in Italy

We are informed that the ESV-Catholic Edition emphasizes “word-for-word” accuracy, literary excellence, and depth of meaning.

I enjoyed reading through this translation. It is not my favourite reading edition, which would be The Jerusalem Bible or the New Jerusalem, or Revised New Jerusalem. But this one is pretty close. It is also solid for study. When I was in university doing my religious studies degree with a focus on Roman Catholic Thought, I often compared numerous translations and editions, when working on essays and other papers. This would have been a great edition for that detailed work.

I was hesitant but also excited to give this new translation a try. The ESV-CE has been available since about 2017. And the Augustinian Institute has had editions since 2020. I believe late in 2025 the Catholic Truth Society will have a UK edition available. Reading Hearing Christ’s Voice A New Lectionary for the Church by Bishop Hugh Gilbert, OSB on why a new Lectionary and why this translation for that new lectionary helped me to eagerly approach this translation. I am thankful I gave it a read. I am thankful I was able to pick this edition up and give it a read. As mentioned I believe this is a good edition for just reading and for study, as such I can recommend it. The Augustine Institute has several editions and styles available. I like this clean crisp edition with minimal footnotes to use as a reading bible. I just really wish there was a Kindle edition available, I have a dual form of dyslexia and with eBooks I can change the font, and the colour of the page and font to make reading easier. I have found several different eBooks of the ESV translation but none of the ESV-CE. A great reading copy of the bible, if you have not read the ESV version this would be a great place to start!

The Rosary in a Year Prayer Guide - Fr. Mark-Mary Ames - Ascension press

This is the first volume from Father Mark-Mary I have read but I am certain it will not be the last. I know other books from him will be very different than this volume, but reading through this volume and listening to the first 6 weeks of the accompanying Podcast has convinced me I will love his writings. But back to this volume. The description of this book states:

“The Rosary in a Year Prayer Guide helps Catholics develop a lasting love for the Rosary and build a relationship with Jesus and Mary. Every day for 365 days readers will be accompanied through daily reflections, insights, and meditations as they grow in praying the Rosary.

The Prayer Guide includes:

The proprietary Rosary in a Year Reading Plan
An introduction from Fr. Mark-Mary Ames, CFR
Introductions to each of the 6 phases of the learning method
The Scripture passages associated with each mystery of the Rosary
Sacred art to reflect on while praying each mystery of the Rosary
Reflections associated with specific days of the podcast
The full text of the prayers of the Rosary
The biblical foundation basis for the prayers of the Rosary
It’s the perfect way to help you develop the habit of praying the Rosary and go even deeper into each mystery!

Readers will be guided through the learning process with:

2 reflections from holy people on each mystery of the Rosary
3 sacred art images for each mystery of the Rosary to help you imagine the mystery
Daily prayer prompts
And even more prayerful content

In addition to the content that goes along with each day's reflection, readers will find information that helps them get even more out of the Rosary outside of the podcast. Written with an intentional Rosary experience in mind, The Rosary in a Year Prayer Guide will help Catholics to grow in relationship with Christ through the Blessed Mother every day.”

I really appreciated that the eBook was available before the Podcast began. I have a dual form of dyslexia and prefer eBooks so I can change the font, and the colour of the font and page to make reading easier. I sat for a few hours one Saturday and read through the rest of this volume so I could review it during the inaugural year of the podcast. I did not think it would be fair to write a review without having finishing the volume. Even though I have read the other 6 ‘In A Year Companions’ for the Bible in a Year and Catechism in a Year.

The sections and chapters in this volume are:

As can be seen from the Table of contents, each section has a separate introduction. And that Introduction includes tips for that section. For example for Phase 6:

“INTRODUCTION
About This Phase

During the final thirty days of the year, we will pray a 5-decade daily Rosary, using the skills and tools we’ve developed throughout the year.

We will begin praying the 5-decade Rosary, including the introductory and concluding prayers. You have been preparing to pray a full Rosary as you slowly built up to saying 5 decades a day in the last phase. If you struggle with this, have no fear; there will be advice along the way!

In addition, we will start praying the mysteries associated with each day of the week, rather than assigned mysteries. This way, you will be praying the mysteries of the day with Catholics around the world.

By the end of this phase, you will have prayed a daily Rosary faithfully for a month, in addition to all the work you have done to build the habit and practice meditation. You will be praying the Rosary like never before!

PRAY
Every day of this phase, we will pray a 5-decade Rosary, including the introductory and concluding prayers. We will meditate on the mysteries of the day as we pray the prayers of the Rosary.

Tips for this phase
•If you have trouble remembering which mysteries to pray each day of the week, refer to the chart on the following page.
•The longer introductory and concluding prayers of the Rosary can be difficult to memorize. In the following pages, these prayers are printed out for you.
•At this point in The Rosary in a Year, you have faithfully been praying for almost a year! If the time of day you selected is not working anymore due to the longer time commitment, don’t be afraid to revisit and find a new time that works for you.
•We have included a chart for you in the following pages to fill in the mystery assignments for each day and track your progress as you finish the podcast.
•Keep up the habit. As we have discovered this year, there are so many rich graces available through the power of the Rosary. After the podcast ends, continue praying the Rosary for yourself, for your friends and relatives, and for the Church!

WHEN TO PRAY EACH SET OF MYSTERIES
•Sundays: glorious mysteries*
•Mondays: joyful mysteries
•Tuesdays: sorrowful mysteries
•Wednesdays: glorious mysteries
•Thursdays: luminous mysteries
•Fridays: sorrowful mysteries
•Saturdays: joyful mysteries

*Optionally, the joyful mysteries may be prayed on Sundays in Advent, and the sorrowful mysteries may be prayed on Sundays in Lent.”

I especially appreciated sections 4 and 5, praying with reflections from the saints or with artwork. This is another excellent volume from Ascension. It is a great resource for those following the podcast. It a tool that will assist and help those following the podcast as they progress throughout the year. I can easily recommend it.

The Hallow Crown 2012-2016 - Movie Review

The Hallow Crown
Year: 2012-2016
Directors:
Rupert Goold
Richard Eyre
Thea Sharrock
Dominic Cooke
Executive producer: Sam Mendes
Producer: Rupert Ryle-Hodges
Running time: varies
Production companies:
Neal Street Productions
NBCUniversal
WNET

The Hallow Crown 2012-2016 Complete Series

A few years ago my son discovered a love of theatre, and I rediscovered it from my own youth. Since then we have been to numerous productions at the Stratford Festival in Stratford Ontario. We both try and read the plays before going and often watch other productions before going to see the play live. After having seen a few of the plasy in this collection we decided to give this series a try. It did not disappoint. It is an absolutely stunning series of adaptations of William Shakespeare’s Historical plays. The title of the series is taken from Richard II:

“For within the hollow crown
That rounds the mortal temples of a king
Keeps Death his court...

— Richard II, act 3, scene 2”

Season one released in 2012 and season 2 in 2016.

The description of the DVD of this movie collection states:

“From executive producer Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) comes a stunning adaptation of four of Shakespeare's most celebrated history plays: Richard II, Henry IV (Part 1 and Part 2), and Henry V. Academy Award® winner Jeremy Irons (The Borgias), Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers), and Ben Whishaw (Skyfall) in his award-winning role as Richard II star in this epic tale of three kings, their battle for survival, and the rise and fall of a dynasty.”

And the synopsis states:

“The Hollow Crown: The Complete Series is a collection of Shakespeare's history plays adapted into a television series, showcasing the rise and fall of English kings and the political intrigue of the time.”

Another description states:

“A collection containing all seven BBC filmed adaptations of Shakespeare's 'History Plays' from 'The Hollow Crown' series, comprising 'Richard II', 'Henry IV: Parts 1 & 2', 'Henry V', 'Henry VI: Parts 1 & 2' and 'Richard III'. Beginning in the year 1399, the plays deal with events affecting the monarchy during a period where the ruling orders of Richard II, Henry IV and Richard III find themselves beset by rebellion, greed and war.”

This can be purchased in a number of ways, you can buy season 1, or season 2 called War of the Roses, There are couple of Complete editions with different covers. And I believe you can purchase each separately on DVD or from digital services.

The plays in this collection are:

Season 1:
Richard II
Henry IV, Part I
Henry IV, Part II
Henry V

Season 2:
Henry VI Part I
Henry VI Part II
Richard III

Key Cast:
Jeremy Irons
Tom Hiddleston
Benedict Cumberbatch
Hugh Bonneville
Judi Dench
Sophie Okonedo
Tom Sturridge
Simon Russell Beale
Judi Dench
Ben Whishaw
Patrick Stewart

From what I have read the first season stayed very true to the plays, but season 2 truncated much of the source material. But that does not take away from the power of these productions. Richard III is one of both y sons and my plays. I have seen Colm Feore play the role over 30 years apart at the Stratford Festival in Ontario. My son had scoliosis and his curvature nearly perfectly matched Richards from when his grave was discovered. So it is always one dear to our hearts. But to be honest each of the 7 productions was magnificent.

My son's before and after and a costume from Stratford 2022

I honestly feel writing a review of the series will never do it justice, I should go back and rewatch each and write a review after each one. The series was nominated for 14 awards and won 6. Stand out performances by Simon Russell Beale as Falstaff, Jeremy Irons as King Henry IV, Tom Hiddleston as King Henry V, and Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard III as well as incredible supporting casts make these productions unforgettable.

Each of the 7 could easily have had theatrical releases. The production quality is top notch, The locations, the costumes, the combat, and even the cinematography is all excellent!

If you are a fan of the works of The Bard these are a must watch!

The Book of Psalms and Canticles - The Abbey Psalter - Catholic Truth Society - CTS Scriptures

This is one of the new volumes supporting the change in the Lectionary in the Catholic Church in England, Scotland and Wales. I have read each of the CTS’s volumes for the four Gospels and eagerly awaited this volume. It has changed a bit since it was first announced, originally the cover was marked with ESV indiccatng the English Standard versions. But this version is based on the Abbey Psalter from the Monks of Conception Abbey.

The description of this volume states:

“The Psalms and Canticles of the Bible are a priceless treasure of in the prayer life of the Church. This special edition of the Abbey Psalter allows the reader to contemplate and pray with the Psalms and Canticles just as they are heard at Mass.

The Psalms and canticles of the Bible are a priceless treasure of in the prayer life of the Church. Shaping both liturgical prayer and personal devotions, the Psalms, through their great variety and ability to poetically capture the essentials of human experience, contain prayers for all occasions: joy and gratitude, sorrow and anger, worship and awe.

This special edition of the Abbey Psalter, an updated translation based on the Grail Psalms, has been published in conjunction with the new lectionary for the Catholic Church in England, Scotland and Wales, which uses this translation. This book allows the reader to contemplate and pray with the Psalms and Canticles just as they are heard at Mass.”

There are three sections in the book:

Section I The Psalms: which contains the 150 Psalms:
Section II Liturgical Canticles
Old Testament Canticles: 37 from Exodus to Zephaniah
New Testament Canticles: 12 from Luke to Revelation

I love the formatting of volume. I took a look at the North American edition and the eBook and the formatting in this version is the best. Nice wide margins. Red letter titles. And For the Old and New Testament ones it lists when in the cycle it is used. It is a great size for carrying around and working though. The typesetting is near perfect.

A sample Psalm is:

Psalm 13 (12)
1 For the Choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

2 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me for ever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
3 How long must I bear grief in my soul,
have sorrow in my heart all day long?
How long shall my enemy prevail over me?

4 Look, answer me, LORD my God!
  Give light to my eyes lest I fall asleep in death;
5 lest my enemy say, “I have overcome him”;
lest my foes rejoice when they see me fall.

6 As for me, I trust in your merciful love.
Let my heart rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the LORD who has been bountiful with me.

A sample Old Testament Canticle:

“Tobit 13:8-11, 13-14ab, 15-16ab
 Friday, Week IV

8 Bless the Lord, all you chosen ones;
and all, give praise to his grandeur.
Take up days of rejoicing and confess him.

9 O Jerusalem, holy city,
for the works of your hands he will punish you.

10 Give thanks to the Lord with good works,
and bless the King of the ages
so that his tent may be rebuilt in you with joy.

  And may he gladden all captives within you;
and may he love all the anguished within you
  for all generations, forever.

11 A brilliant light will shine to all the ends of the earth;
many nations will come to you from afar,
and from all the earth’s ends to your holy name,
bearing their gifts in their hands for the King of heaven.

  Generation after generation
will give joyful praise in you,
and the name of the chosen one will be forever.

13 Then you will rejoice and exult
over the children of the righteous,
for they will all be gathered in
and will bless the Lord of the ages.

14 Blessed are those who love you,
and blessed those who rejoice in your fruitful peace.

15 O my soul, bless the Lord, the great King,
16 for Jerusalem shall be built as a city,
his house from age to age.”

A sample New Testament Canticle:

Ephesians 1:3-10
 Monday

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ
  with every spiritual blessing in the heavens;

just as he has chosen us in him
before the foundation of the world
to be holy and blameless before him in love.

He destined us for adoption
  to himself through Jesus Christ,
in accord with the good pleasure of his will,
to the praise of his glorious grace,
with which he favoured us in the Beloved.

In him we have redemption through his blood,
  the forgiveness of transgressions,
in accord with the riches of his grace
lavished on us in all wisdom and insight.

He has made known to us the mystery of his will
in accord with his good pleasure,
which he set forth in Christ as a plan,
10 a plan for the fullness of times,
to recapitulate all things in him,
things in heaven, and things on earth.

I have worked through this volume once and will keep it on my bedside table and likely work through it time and time again. It is an excellent edition to read, study, and pray. I absolutely love this edition of the Psalms and love the addition of the Canticles.

I can easily recommend this volume it would be a great addition to any Catholics library or prayer corner.

Pocket Book of Hope: Words of Inspiration - Living with Christ

I have been searching for books to read for the Jubilee Year of Hope this year in 2025. I loved 7 of the 8 volumes in the Notes on Prayer Series from the Catholic Truth Society. And the volume Hope: An Anchor for the Soul: 30 Daily Devotions by Amy Welborn was wonderful. This one on the other hand was a disappointment. With nearly each piece I read in this series my rating went down. But I will get to that in a bit. The description of this volume states:

“Where do you find hope in the world today? In this inspiring book, a dozen Catholic writers from different walks of life reflect on where they find hope in their work and in their lives, despite the many challenges and crises that surround us.

As we embrace the Jubilee Year 2025, whose theme is “Pilgrims of Hope,” we can all join in this pilgrimage and look for signs of hope, which “does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us” (Romans 5:5).”

And the pieces in this booklet are:

Introduction
Hope Takes Care
The Best Is Yet to Be
Hope from the Prophets of Today
A Promise of What Can Be
God Holds Death and Life
An Unwavering Spark
Storying Our Hope
Sustaining Sources of Hope
The Hand of God
Social Movements, Fountains of Social Hope
“That’s Why You Were Baptized”: The Decision to Hope

At the end of each chapter is a brief bio of the contributors, in order of appearance they are:

Anne Louise Mahoney is the editor of Looking to the Laity: Reflections on Where the Church Can Go from Here and of Never-ending Love: Sharing Stories, Prayers and Comfort for Miscarriage and Infant Loss, and is the author of I Hope, a book for young children.

Greg Kennedy works as a spiritual director and Executive Director at Ignatius Jesuit Center in Guelph, Ontario. He has authored Reupholstered Psalms and Amazing Friendships between Animals and Saints (Novalis).

Author and editor Catherine Mulroney is the mother of four and grandmother of two. She lives in Toronto, where she gardens, reads - and babysits!

Glen Argan has been a writer and editor in Canada’s Catholic press for more than 45 years. He lives in Edmonton, Alberta.

Mariette Martineau is an author, wife and mother, and the Canadian Religious Stewardship Community Consultant for three religious communities in Saskatoon. She is the former Religious Education and Family Life Coordinator of the Kenora Catholic District School Board.

Donald Bolen currently serves as the Catholic Archbishop of Regina, Saskatchewan. He has spent much of his priestly and episcopal life working on ecumenical and justice issues.

Stefany Dupont is originally from Gatineau, Quebec. She now lives in Vancouver, where she is pursuing a teaching degree.

Stephen Bede Scharper explores the interweaving of' ecology, spirituality, justice and compassion at the University of Toronto and beyond.

Christine Way Skinner is a doctoral candidate in theology at Regis St. Michael's i11 Toronto. She has been a lay ecclesial minister for over 30 years.

Dr. Constance Price works in theological and pastoral education. She is the author Beyond the Ramp: A Parish Guide to Welcoming Persons with Disabilities (Novalis and Twenty-Third Publications, 2020).

Joe Gunn is the farmer executive director of Citizens for Public Justice. He is a speaker, activist and author on social and environmental concerns.

Anne Walsh is from St. john's, Newfoundland and Labrador. She works with the Redemptorists in Adult Faith Formation and coordinating and resourcing Partnership in Mission. She holds the Office of Partnership in Mission for the Redemptorists worldwide and is Chair of the Redemptorist General Commission for Partnership in Mission.

Ok back to the volume. I believe all by three pieces have a focus or mention the ‘environmental crisis’. I just briefly and is a good piece. There were 2 pieces I loved, one other was good and 1 was just ok. When I was in high school Frank Coffee, my English Teacher said half of what I wrote was worth publishing and half he could use to wipe his … My problem with my dual form of dyslexia was I often cannot tell the difference. This volume I would put at 30/70 and that might be being generous.

One piece mentions a creator twice, focus on the environment it mentions the anointing of Jesus feet but in relation to how we should love the environment and states:

“Writing about hope will only get us so far. If we don't start caring for the generous creatures, both animate and inanimate, of this Earth, pouring out our thanks and love on them in ways that could appear excessive, but in fact are restorative and full of promise, we'll lose all hold on hope.”

If it had been an eBook I would have returned it after reading the introduction and this first piece. The piece by Catherine Mulroney was worth the read. The piece by Archbishop Donald Bolen was great and ends with:

“Chris tian hope leads to gratitude, but it also leads to resilience, courage and action. Hope is not an end in itself May our hope inspire lives of commitment, generosity and trust as we spend ourselves at the service of others and our world, echoing the great self-gift of God in our crucified and Risen Lord.”

But most of the volume is just woke referencing Gahndi, Martin Luther King, Alexei Navalny, and Mandela without a clear focus on Christ and the Gospel in my opinion is an epic failure for a Catholic volume, from a Catholic Publisher, for the Catholic Extraordinary Jubilee year 2025 with the theme Pilgrims of Hope. Oh and taking pot shots at political figures south of the border.

Normally I pass on all physical books I buy, often to my son, to his school library, to friends or family. I cannot think of a single person I would give this to or could recommend it to. As such in ended up in the round filing cabinet under my desk!

I have read many great volumes for the Jubilee year and have a few others I still plan to read. I recommend you do not bother picking this one up or even giving it a read!

Joline - Jim Sano - Father Tom Book 6

This is the eighth novel from the pen of Jim Sano that I have read. It is the sixth that is in the Father Tom series. This one was so hard to put down, in fact I devoured it over a couple of days, and if work had not been so busy it would have been much quicker. This one is much darker than the earlier volumes, and even darker than the last offering. It is an excellent story about a loss, abuse, and has some troublesome murder. Father Tom and Angelo end back in the thick of things, based on the crimes, and the events taking place, Father Tom’s holiday visiting a parish or a seminarian friend ends up not being so restful.

Like the other Father Tom stories this book has excellent characters, a great plot, and it has wonderful pacing. With each volume from Jim I read I appreciate his writing more. I love the Father Tom books and this story keeps you guessing the whole way through. I am certain the story will draw you in and keep you hooked.

This story is a contemporary fiction tale. It is a story about finding out how a young girl died on the evening she graduated high school. It is what Madeleine L’Engle referred to as realistic fiction. It is set in our world, in our time, and with our issues and struggles. In this one Father Tim uncovers some long ignored abuse, and sees its impact on the individual, their marriage and even the victims children. In this story we have a few main characters, and several supporting characters that play key roles. But in some ways this one reads like a Christian or Catholic version of Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer or the Spencer stories by Robert B. Parker. The description of the book is:

“Father Tom heads up to the small coastal village of Belfast, Maine, to visit a friend from the seminary in the sixth book of this award-winning series. While there, 19-year-old Joline is found dead floating in the harbor waters, and the town doesn’t know if it was an accident, suicide, or murder. Moved by compassion for Joline’s family and friends, Father Tom sets out to do what he does best, and the local sheriff, J.C. Coombs, begrudgingly comes to rely on Father Tom and his sidekick, Angelo, for help to uncover clues and a history of secrets and wounds of the intriguing characters who live in this small fishing village. Rich with faith, humor, friendship, forgiveness, redemption, and emotional healing, the plot keeps the reader guessing with twists and turns until the end as the town comes to terms with its loss.”

I have long been a fan of the Priest detective genre. Thirty years ago I read numerous of the Andrew M. Greeley novels, and my favourites were the Bishop Blackie Ryan novels, the Father Tom books have now eclipsed those. The big difference is Greeley’s works reached a point where I struggled with his presentation of Catholicism, living the faith and even God. The Father Tom books keep the faith and do an amazing job of showing faith, doubt, struggles, and ultimately learning to trust in God. In many ways this is like Fiorella de Maria’s Father Gabriel Mysteries, in that it is a great mystery with faith and fiction blended into an excellent story.

I stated of the last that it was the most intense Father Tom story, And I agree it was more intense, but this one is the most heart wrenching. Sano has done an excellent job of balancing writing a murder mystery without crossing the line of over doing the violence. He also handles an adult confronting abuse they suffered as a child very well. This story was tougher to read than the first few in the series. It deals with very serious subject matter. It is written in such a way that it will inspire and encourage as well.

Returning to a volume with Father Tom and Angelo was like a visit with old friends. It was great to catch up with them, even if they were trying to solve the murder in in the small town of Belfast, Maine. Jim’s characters are wonderfully written. It is an excellent read from the pen of Jim Sano. It is a story about faith, family, friends and overcoming past hurts and wounds, and a small community dealing with loss. It is well written, and the characters will stay with you long after you finish reading the story.

Another excellent read from Jim and Full Quiver. I highly recommend the book and the series.

Space Traipse Hold My Beer Season 8 - Karina Lumbert Fabian

I just love the Space Traipse stories! And after a 2 years hiatus reading this was like a visit with old friends. I have read many books by Karina Fabian, including rereads I am up to 52 read now of books she has written and edited and another half dozen contributions to anthologies. I love her wit, her witticisms, and her wisdom. He stories are in a wide range of genres. And her list of series is every growing. This is the eighth in the Space Traipse: Hold My Beer, Series. I have read the previous 7 and a standalone side story (more on that later). I cannot seem to put her books down, and I devoured the new offerings. I have read some of her contributions in anthologies and love her short form fiction. I also love her religious themed fiction. However the Space Traipse books are completely different than any of her other works. Well maybe not completely different, the humour infuses much of what she writes. In some ways her works are like a Catholic version of Douglas Adams, Robert Asprin, or Tom Holt. All of whom I enjoy but Fabians works have eclipsed them in my list of favourites.

I grew up watching reruns of Star Trek the Original Series, and the animated series during its original run. I have long been a fan of the shows and when much younger read many novelizations. I loved reading the old James Blish Star Trek stories. Reading the stories in this series take me back to that early stage in my reading, but these have a much more humorous slant. These stories are part homage, part satire, part commentary, part parody, and they are always a whole lot of fun! The description of this volume states:

“Space Traipse is back with more fun than ever. Original stories and parodies of old Star Trek episodes ready to warm hearts and tickle funnybones. In this exciting

Yesterday Ain't Tomorrow (Parody of "Tomorrow is Yesterday): When a space pothole throws the Impulsive back to 1960, they have to beam an Air Force pilot aboard to save his life. Getting him back should be easy enough¿if he'll stop flirting with the doctor and fighting Ensign Gel. The real trouble lies on Earth, where a local DJ has caught wind of the Impulsive's sudden appearance and has all of Omaha up in arms about the visiting Moon People.

Otherwise Ellie and Todd visit a traveling priest for pre-marriage counseling, though Ellie is suspicious. Why would her non-religious mother recommend this particular priest? When his past catches up with him in the middle of their session, Ellie gets her answer-and a lot more. It's pirate battles and "I Told You So"s in this Toddlie episode!

Gamesters of Triskatelion (Parody of TOS "Gamesters of Triskelion"): In this early adventure of the Impulsive, Lt. Tonio Cruz, Ensign Leslie Strauss, and Engineer Mate Minion Nodwick Dionysus are teleported to a strange planet and forced to participate in roller derby games for the amusement of The Sponsors, a futuristic race obsessed with gambling.

Too Old for This (Parody of TOS “Arena”): Remember the story "Captain's Cage Match" in Book 4? Now, we're getting it from the Gorn captain's point of view!”

The tag line for the series is:

“Space: By Keptar, there’s a lot of it. And it’s chock-full of stuff to do and people to meet. These are the adventures of the HMB Impulsive. Its mission: to explore worlds, to seek out anomalies, and to boldly do what no one else has the guts to do! And you know that we’re the ship to do it.

Don’t believe me? Hold my beer!”

The stories in this instalment are as highlighted above:

Yesterday Ain’t Tomorrow
Otherwise Ellie and Todd
Gamesters of Triskatelion
Too Old for this Parody

These stories follow the further adventures of the captain and the crew of the HMB Impulsive. The descriptions of the main crew members are:

• Capt Jeb Tiberius: A good ol’ boy from Texas whose religion requires firm buttocks.
• First Officer Commander Phineas Smythe: His uncanny ability to win Rock-Paper-Scissors-Redshirt-Alien means he can pick his away missions.
• Chief Engineer Commander Angus Deary: The first person to reverse the polarity by 90 degrees.
• Chief of Security, Enigo Guillermo Ricardo Montoya Guiterrez LaFuentes: Raised on the UGS The Hood, where gang war is a cultural right, he’s not afraid to shoot a fellow crewman. That’s what stun is for!
• Ops Officer Ensign Ellie Doall: Fresh from the HMB Mary Sue, she can so just about anything all on her own – and often does.
• Transporter Chief, Dolfrick Dour: By the manipulations of technology, he reduces people to their most basic elements and rematerializes them elsewhere. Is it any wonder he’s 23rd Century Goth?

Though I must admit to missing Enigo in this offering. Being caught up on all the volumes in this series, I can easily state it is getting even better with age. The last story in this collection I had been waiting for, for a long time; I was wondering how Fabian would run the parody of that episode. And did she ever deliver.

Four great stories, a death match, time travel, roller derby death battles and an Ellie and Todd story. Just another set of adventures for Captain Jeb and the crew of the Impulsive. The Roller Derby story has instilled a desire to re-watch the 1975 James Caan version of the movie Rollerball

This is another great volume in a very fun series. It is one that leaves you hanging absolutely desperate to find out what happens to the Impulsive and her crew next. And wondering where do things go from here?

It is a wonderful collection of tales. I said it before and say it again after this volume, it is great for fans of trek, fans of parodies, or people who just love great science fiction stories. The tales reminded me of Spider Robinson’s Cross Time Saloon books in many ways, as well as Robert Asprin’s Phule’s Company and Harry Harrison’s Stainless Steel Rat books. It is a great ensemble crew, with interesting adventures, and a whole lot of fun.

Give this book or series a try; I am certain you will be entertained. It is a lot of fun.
