The Eternity Symbiote - Cedar Sanderson

This is the eighteenth volume by Sanderson that I have read. I first encountered the works of Cedar in Cracked: An Anthology of Eggsellent Chicken Stories, and after reading her piece there knew I had to track down and read something else from her pen. I had picked this one while researching for a different review. It is one of many in her back catalogue that I have read. I was intrigued as soon as I saw the cover. The day I picked this up I grabbed two other older volumes from Sanderson. It is great and well worth the read.

The description of this volume states:

“Unknown to humanity, a galactic power struggle surges over the Earth. When an alien delegation suffers a fatal accident, hidden plans unravel around the wreckage in the Alaskan wilderness. Infectious disease expert Gabrielle McGregor discovers the hidden infiltrations, and neither her life, nor her family’s, will ever be the same.”

Gabrielle McGregor, is living in the wilderness and flying as a bush pilot. Her current job does not make a lot of sense, Dropping off two government types at a remote lake and they will be picked up in a few days once they call in. But before she takes off, they get her attention and say the person they were there to wait for has arrived and they are ready to go back. Unfortunately they experience a bird strike and everything is about to change.

This story is written in a classic science fiction style. It was so hard to put down. Humans have made first contact, a gift from the Orion’ess is released during an accident and soon it appears Earth will never be the same again. We join bush pilot and scientist Gabrielle McGregor, her estranged husband Lieutenant Colonel Jedediah McGregor, a scientist named Paul Monroe. As they face exposure to the alien crystals.

Unfortunately the G'his have plans for Earth and humans. But to find out you will need to read this story. The plot is fast and intense. The characters masterfully written. And to be honest it leaves you wanting more! Another excellent read from Sanderson’s pen.

Prayer of the Day For The Souls In Purgatory

Prayer of the Day For The Souls In Purgatory

O MOST gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on the souls of Thy departed servants. Be not severe in Thy judgments, but let some drops of Thy Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames. And do Thou, O Merciful Saviour, send Thy holy angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light and peace.

A sculpture of souls in purgatory at the back of my church.

This prayer is from this book:

Mary at the Crossroads of History - Francis J. Hoffman aka Fr Rocky

This volume was originally published in 2020 by Relevant Radio, it was then reprinted by Scepter Publishers in 2022. I received a copy to review many months ago, I took it on a short vacation to read and absolutely loved it. My only regret is that there is no eBook edition of this or The Memorare Moment, I have a dual form of dyslexia and prefer eBooks so I can change the font, and the colour of the font and the page, to make reading easier. But even with there being no eBook edition I consider this an excellent volume and one of the best books I have read this year. At the reading of this volume I have read 187 books in nearly the first half of this year. And this is one I will be sharing with friends for a long time to come.

The description of the book states:

“Mary at the Crossroads of History provides insight and justification into the special role our Blessed Mother plays in history. As Drew Mariani expressed: " This book will give you a deeper understanding of Our Lady's special role in human history and stir your heart with a greater love for her".”

And about the author we are informed:

“Rev. Francis J. Hoffman, JCD (Fr. Rocky) is Executive Director of Relevant Radio.  Ordained as a priest for Opus Dei in 1992 by Blessed John Paul II, he holds a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, and a BA in History from Northwestern University.”

The chapters in this volume are:

Forward: The Inflection Point
The Millennium Game
In the Beginning
Mother of God, Mother of the Church
The Confrontation in Spain
The Flowering of Christendom
The Century of Fatima
The Battle for Life – and Relevant Radio’s Part in It
What We Can Do – with Our Lady’s Help
Some Sources
About the Author
About Relevant Radio

The story of the Millennium Game and how it started the idea for this volume back on December 31st 1999 was fascinating, and from there Father Rocky goes back and forth through history of Mary’s interventions, messages, and the impact they have had on communities, society and the world. But that is wrapped in the idea that we are at another inflection point in history, and we can use these examples from the past to trust in Mary and her intercession.

His examples span history from Mary’s interactions with the disciples, to the battle at Lepanto, From Guadalupe to Fatima. He has a focus of a few stores about Our Lady of Good Help, and Adele Brise. His story are from epic battles in Christendom, Mary guiding a bullet, to personal stories of families he met on the Walk to Champion.

This is an amazing little volume that any Catholic would benefit from reading. It will challenge, encourage and inspire readers of all ages. I can easily recommend this book.

Saint Clement Catholic Cambridge Ontario Church A Photo Essay

Saint Clement Roman Catholic Cambridge Ontario
A Photo Essay

Over 30 years ago I loved in Cambridge for a couple of semesters. The family I was staying with helped me get to this parish for a weekend mass and often at least 1 weekday mass each week. I had fond memories of my few months in Cambridge, even with how stressful that time was in my life. Now I am in the area weekly, as my son has play rehearsals just down the street. So on June 12th I popped in and spend some time praying and took some photos.

I would love to go back and spend some time identifying all the saints in the stained glass. I was able to identify all the sculptures. It is a beautiful church that is part of the Diocese of Hamilton. If you are in the area or just passing through check out the mass times. It is well worth the visit.

Return of the Grudstone Ghosts - Arthur Slade - Canadian Chills Book 1 Reprint Edition

This book and series are back in print in a new Shadowpaw Press Reprise edition. I am thankful this books are back in print. This book, originally published as a Moose Jaw Mystery, and part of what later became the Canadian Chills Series, is a wonderful example of Canadian storytelling. Arthur Slade has a knack for writing compelling fiction. In this story three close friends attend St. Wolcott School. But on the first day of school Miss Vindez is thrown from the belfry window and things just keep getting stranger after that. Daphne, Nick and Peach must figure out what is going on; it involves old time gangsters, hidden tunnels and a mystery that needs to be solved.

The description of this volume is:

“Terror stalks the halls of St. Wolcott School . . .

When Daphne’s sixth-grade teacher, Miss Vindez, plummets from the belfry of St. Wolcott School, Daphne and her friends Nick and Peach are plunged into a mystery that includes a long-ago fire that left behind twelve dead schoolchildren, tiny ghosts with nowhere to go, and an ancient evil just dying to break through into modern-day Moose Jaw.

Miss Vindez survives her fall, but things just aren’t the same–she’s spouting gibberish, and both Principal Peterka and the school janitor are definitely not themselves at all anymore.

Determined to get to the bottom of what’s going on, Daphne, Nick, and Peach dig up the troubled history of Grudstone, the school that used to stand where St. Wolcott is now. They uncover evidence of a crime so terrible it can hardly be believed. Worse, the terrifying perpetrator of that crime isn’t done yet–he has more horrible plans in mind. And all that stands in his way are three Moose Jaw school kids.”

When I tracked down a previous edition of these books we donated it to our kid’s school library. Now that it is back in print, my son and I am rereading them again together. It was fantastic to reread this book 14 years apart. I enjoyed it even more this second time through.

The story is half history, half humour, and half a tale of friendship and adventure and it is a whole lot of fun. This is an excellent school story wrapped in a mystery filled with history and just enough scare factor for the intended audience.

It is an excellent read and I can easily recommend it!

Eucharistic Adoration Prayer Book - Marie Paul Curley FSP 2nd Edition

It should be noted this is one of three similar books by the same author all from Pauline Books and Media. This edition with the black cover released in 2024, and the cover states it was written and complied by Marie Paul Curley, FSP. There is a 2019 edition with a red cover and not attribution of who authored it. I cannot help but wonder of part of the colour change was to not confuse it with TAN Books Manual for Eucharistic Adoration by The Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration. I also mentioned a third there is also Essential Eucharistic Adoration Prayers with a similar black cover that released in 2024 which is sub set of what is contained in this volume. The description of the hard cover version states:

“Whether you are new to the practice of Eucharistic Adoration or searching for ways to go deeper, The Eucharistic Adoration Prayer Book is an invaluable guide to meeting Jesus in the Eucharist and growing in wholeness and holiness through Eucharistic prayer. This book features a rich collection of scriptural, traditional, and contemporary prayers and devotions as well as an explanation of the Mass and Eucharistic prayer, prayers for Benediction, guided holy hours, and practical tips for living a Eucharistic day.”

And the description of the eBook versions state:

““Jesus’ gift of his very self in the Eucharist is an ongoing, amazing manifestation of God’s eagerness to be not just close, but united with you. . . . The Eucharistic Adoration Prayer Book is both an introduction to adoration for those just starting this beautiful practice, and a resource and invaluable guide for those seeking to renew or deepen their adoration in a way that fosters spiritual growth, wholeness, and holiness.” (From the Preface)
In this book, you will find:
     Prayers for receiving Communion
     Prayers for Benediction
     Ten guided holy hours
A treasury of biblical, traditional, and contemporary prayers to
          foster Eucharistic devotion
A collection of classic Eucharistic hymns
Also included are an explanation of the Mass and Eucharistic prayer, practical tips for living a Eucharistic day, and a rich variety of devotions.”

List of Contributors

The first edition of this book only had 7 dedicated Hours of Adoration reflections, and this volume offers 10. It also offers a plethora of other prayers, hymns and songs.

It is a wonderful volume. The leather edition is stunning. But I love the eBook edition so I can have it on me at all times. It is a great addition to my collection of prayer books. It would be a great addition to any home, school, or church library. It is a resource I can easily recommend for your prayer life. Weather you get to adoration often or infrequently this book will be a great resource for those times and as a general prayer book for the rest of the times. I can easily recommend it.

Leave it to the Hangman - Bill Knox forward by J.D. Kirk - Thane and Moss Book 3

I picked this up because J.D Kirk was plugging it. I became even more interested in reading the book and series after reading the forward by Kirk, that only appears in book 1, but which I think should be in each volume. I highlighted a few passages in Kirk’s introductory note from book 1, they are:

“I had been expertly drawn into the world that Bill had created, and was right there alongside detectives Thane and Moss as they carried out their investigations. I had identified with the detectives right away–the imposing Chief Inspector Colin Thane, with his no-nonsense attitude and dogged determination, and his trusty Inspector, Phil Moss, whose loyalty to his friend was second only to his worries about his grumbling ulcer. They immediately felt like real people. More than that, they felt like real Scottish men, whose evident care for one another was masked beneath gruff exchanges and barbed banter.”

“Yes, some of the terminology was different, and there was a lot less swearing in Bill’s book, but down below the surface, down where it mattered, we were both writing about good but complicated men doing their best to bring killers to justice.”

“Aside from the slight change to the title, and a few ten-thousand-word chapters being broken into shorter segments, the book you are about to read is the same one first published in 1957.”

The fact that Kirk though these books were good enough to spend some time and effort tracking down the rights and bringing them back into print indicates the quality of the writing and the power of the stories. This novel was originally published in 1958 and this Zertex edition is from 2024. The description of the new edition is:

“Every family has its secrets. Some more than others.

Venture back into the shadowy heart of 1960s Scotland with this third electrifying instalment of Bill Knox's acclaimed Thane & Moss series.

Leave it to the Hangman introduces Glasgow's most notorious criminal dynasty – the Kilburns. From the murky depths of smuggling to the explosive dangers of stolen dynamite, no deed is too daring for this clan.

Yet, even in a world where lawlessness reigns, there are lines that are not meant to be crossed.

The cold-blooded murder of a policeman shocks the city. Both the police and the Kilburns themselves know that one of the family was responsible. But which one?

From the grimy streets of 1960s Glasgow to a desolate lochside, the chase leads Detectives Thane and Moss through a maze of deceit and danger. As they draw closer to the truth, they find themselves up against not just the cunning of a criminal family, but the very code that binds them.

In this gripping tale of loyalty, betrayal, and justice, Knox masterfully navigates the thin line between right and wrong. "Leave it to the Hangman" is a testament to the enduring legacy of Tartan Noir, showcasing Knox's unparalleled ability to weave authentic police work with the rich, atmospheric setting of Scotland's dark side.

Rediscover the thrill of the chase and the depth of Glasgow's criminal world in this gripping tale of loyalty, betrayal, and justice.”

So it was with great interest that I dove into this third story in this series after reading all of Kirk’s Scottish crime novels that were available to date; and having read Alex Smith’s DCI Kett novels and J.E. Mayhew’s DCI Will Blake Series. It was fascinating to read this story and series set nearly a hundred years earlier. It was intriguing reading stories before cell phones, and technology that so many modern crime books and shows rely on. But back to the work at hand.

I have greatly enjoyed the characters of Thane and Moss, through these first three stories in this series. And the Irish family in this novel, reminds me of my own Irish roots, both here in Canada and back across the pond. For An Aunt visited in th 80’s and said ‘Ye nay should go home Steven you look too much like your cousins and they are mostly wanted.’ All a part of the troubles. The Irish kin in this story bring back memories of family lore and a deep seated hatred of the English.

Thane and Moss are reminiscent of DCI Logan and DI Ben Forde. The language is not as extreme as in Kirk’s books. But the team, and working to solve the case, especially after the prison escape are very written story. The characters are fascinating. Reading it, it is like being transported back in time. The story moves at a brisk pace. And the small details and clues that are worked on open up the case.

This third story leaves you wanting more. Kirk has already announced a date for book 5. Kirk is releasing them at a decent pace. And I sincerely home he sees this series and maybe other series by Knox through to publication. Reading this was in some was like watching Mike Hammer with my dad, or reading his old Ian Fleming or Robert B. Parker books. I have already recommended this series to my dad, my manager at work and a few friends. I can easily recommend this story for fans of crime fiction, historical fiction or to be honest anyone who loves a good story. But be warned it leaves you wanting more.

Prayer of the Day Act of Contrition

Prayer of the Day Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, But most of all because they have offended thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.

Prayer of the Day Act of Contrition - A Confessional

Praying an Act of Contrition daily was in part inspired by:

A Catholic Survival Guide for Times of Emergency - Deacon Nick Donnelly

But it took me trying a few different ones before I found one I could memorize and flowed well for me. Much like A Spiritual Communion Prayer, I tried a few before I found one that I loved and worked well for me.
