Updated:

When I posted this review there was a comment on my blog:

“Dr Roerta Howes replied with a quote attributed to you. "Fr McGettrick ODC may well label his book as Christian Meditation, but the truth is, that his book is about New Age Mantras which shows he has little in the way of Christian Meditation knowledge. Please read the then Cardinal Ratzinger's 'Jesus Christ the Bearer of the Water of Life - A Christian Reflection on the New Age' to see where Fr McGettrick has lost his way. So sad that CTS continue to promote him. He is 'New Age' Indian Mantra movement. And he leads genuine searcher astray"”

I replied back with: Can you provide a source Dr Howes for your David Torkington quote. For that was not how I read this book. For what you are describing is exacly how I felt about The Mindful Catholic Finding God One Moment at a Time by Dr. Gregory Bottaro I felt such a check in my spirit I did not finish the book. And I found A Catholic Guide to Mindfulness by Susan Brinkmann: to be of immense value. I did not find this one focused on emptying, but filling with God. Much like the Jesus Prayer.  As David Torkington was mentioned in the original comment I reached out to him for I loved his, Prayer Made Simple.

I also reached out to a spiritual director. Both replied with grave concerns about this volume. One response included:

“In the UK, we have had a major conflict in the Benedictine order, particularly in Ealing, London. A priest, Fr John Main from Ealing Abbey split the Abbey and the UK Benedictines   with his teaching of Indian meditation which he brought to his novitiate after studying the mantra movement in India. Of course this is the antitheses of the Christian meditation movement. But in the 70's when the New Age movement was making vast incursions into the traditional teaching of mystical theology, many of us took our guidance from the Cardinal Ratzinger's 'Jesus Christ the Bearer of the Water of Life' which was the traditional doctrine opposed to the New Age movement.”

And also:

“Syncretism, that is, the attempt to combine the spiritualty of the west and the east is simply not the Christianity which Christ taught, So personally I would be opposed to any attempt to use the Indian non Christian traditions used by the mantra movement. Cardinal Ratzinger was clear on his guidance. The world meditation movement is very much in to the mantra movement. This is the antithesis of everything we know that Christ taught and I would be opposed to it and I would take guidance here from Pope Benedict.”

As such I have updated my review from 5 starts to 1 and can no longer recommend this volume and will not return to it. If you are looking for a good read on prayer I recommend Prayer Made Simple, other volumes by Torkington, and others I have reviewed from the CTS. Note I am leaving the original review below for context and because of internet archive sites!

~~~ Original Review~~~
This is the first book I have read by Father Matthew McGettrick ODC, and I believe the only book he has published. Or at least that I can find evidence of. This volume was first published in 1979. It was reprinted in 2001 and the eBook edition released in 2017. Over the last several years I have read over 275 volumes from the Catholic Truth Society. Many great books, many wonderful series, and a slew of excellent authors. I have ready many books in the CTS Devotions and Prayers Series that have been of benefit to my faith.
The description of this volume is:
“A Christian guide on how to meditate and the many practical fruits. This is a well written, thoughtful guide on contemplative meditation.
A genuine Christian guide on how to meditate – and the many practical fruits. This is an excellently written, thoughtful guide on contemplative meditation – on how to do it, and on how important it is for a disciple of Christ to carry an attentive spirit in a practical way into daily life. Fr Matthew's famous little text has become a classic, and has helped countless numbers to secure a simple and straightforward marriage between everyday living and, as he puts it, focusing our will, our heart, on God our loving Father. Far from escapism, genuine Christian meditation equips the disciple to live in the truth, and without fear.”
The chapters and sections in this work are:
Introduction to Meditation
     Relaxation
     Use of Mantra
     Wandering Thoughts
     Other forms of Mantra
The Essence of Meditation
     Loving Attentiveness
     How God Comes to us
     Harmonising Our Daily Life with Meditation
     Harmony of Life
     Self-Discipline
     Getting Our Priorities Right
Setting Aside Time for God
     Spirit of Sacrifice
     Being Open to the Light of God
     Our Moods Give Way to God’s Spirit
Desire for God
     The Divine Attraction
     Distracting Thoughts
     Where Happiness is Found
This volume begins with these words:
“I would like to say something to help people to get started on contemplative meditation. The first thing to bear in mind is the importance of being relaxed. Any kind of tension, of body and still more of mind, interferes with the smooth development of contemplative meditation and it makes us more or less unreceptive to the inflowing of God’s light and love. In order to develop this relaxation we should remember it not only when we come to do meditation but throughout the rest of our daily life as well. We should keep in mind the importance of being relaxed in our daily work and make use of any spare moments when we have nothing in particular to do to get used to the idea of simply doing nothing.
Many people find it hard to do nothing. If they have five minutes when there is nothing in particular to be done they feel they have to start doing something. If they sit down on a chair they want to pick up a magazine, they want to switch on the radio or the television. They want to do something. The idea of just doing nothing seems foreign to them, and yet it is important not only to give our bodies rest but our minds also. It is important to be able to sit down now and again even if for only a few minutes and relax our bodies, let all our muscles go loose and limp, and also relax our minds, allow the mind to slow down. We are accustomed to a racing mind, one thing after another filling our minds, doing this, doing that, getting here, getting there. Our mind is running quite fast most of the time and we need to let it slow down. This we do by not deliberately following up any line of thought.”
I only highlighted a few passages my first time through this volume. They were:
“That is only one scene, but there are many from the life of Christ that you can hold in your mind, but do not start thinking about them. Of course you could; it is an excellent thing to think about various incidents in the life of Christ and to have reflections upon them, but that is discursive meditation and we are now talking about contemplative meditation.”
“That is the essence of meditation because it means that we are desiring God, we are wanting God, we are open to God, we are listening to God, we are waiting upon God, we are surrendered to God. The word ‘surrender’ expresses it well; the surrendering of ourselves, the throwing of ourselves into the arms of God."
“So everything leads us to God if we react to it in the right way, if we seek God in everything, if we try to keep our feet on the path that leads to God. As St Paul says, “All things work together for the good of those who love God”. So the desire for God and for making our way towards Him should be the consuming desire of our life. All our plans about our daily life, about our future, about what to do and what not to do, what job to have, where to go; all that should be inspired and guided by the question, ‘Is it going to lead me to God?’ ‘Is it going to bring me closer to God?’ ‘Is it what God wants?’ If we really desire what God wants God will see that we get it.”
This is a little volume but it is packed full. The physical edition is listed as 38 pages and the eBook as 40. It is a book I will likely return to again. There is a lot of information and some excellent guidance. This is a book I am certain one that all who read will benefit from. The teachings are clear and concise. This book feels like a little primer on Contemplative Meditation. I recommend it as another great resource from the Catholic Truth Society.
A Nation of Tyrants - C And C Spellman - Shadows of Freedom Book 2
A Nation of Tyrants
The Shadows of Freedom Book 2
Rosemont Books
ISBN 9781735259239
eISBN 9781735259246
ASIN B09ZWNHS2B
I enjoyed book 1 in this series, but I loved book two. This story is very well written, and leaves you desperate for the next instalment. I picked up book one, In The Shadows of Freedom, because two or three authors I enjoy reading had made mention of it. I knew nothing about the ploy or the authors. For a debut novel it is a good effort. The authors are a husband and wife team Cassandra and Chris Spellman. I stated of the first that “The plot and story are similar to a few other books I have read. But that did not detract from the enjoyment on their take on a dystopian future.” It was a good story and was worth giving a read. This second instalment takes it to a whole new level. The description of this book states:
“Law and order in the United States continue to wither while the National Citizens Party’s control grows. Congress is disbanded, the NCP is seizing property, and major cities are only open to members of the party. Everyone else is labelled an enemy—including Amanda Burrow and Ethan Ramsey.
Life at a refugee camp in Canada is not what Amanda and Ethan expected. Ethan feels like a prisoner, while Amanda’s reunion with her father and sister proves problematic. Ethan’s plan to connect with his father in order to escape to Europe leads him and Amanda on a journey to Boston fraught with more danger than they bargained for.
As they traverse this troubled landscape, Amanda seeks to change Ethan for the better. Yet who will be the one changed? Will Amanda’s conflicting feelings for Ethan prove to be tyrants over her in a nation filled with them?”
This story continues in a world in the not very distant future. If you do not contribute you are encouraged to seek termination. This story begins with Amanda arriving at a refugee camp in Canada for those displaced from the United States. Amanda is determined to help Ethan, and really believes she is the only one who can help him, and lead him to God. She is reunited with her Father and her sister. But things with her sister are very strained. Her dad and sister we in a detainment centre in the US and were rescued. Amanda, her sister Chiara, her friend Joe work together to break Ethan out, and smuggle him back into the US and try and help him connect with his dad. Along the way Amanda keeps giving up pieces of herself, making sacrifices and doing wrong. Believing in the end it will help Ethan. Amanda soon finds out when we try to save someone, we often sacrifice ourselves, and actually can make things worse.
The faith aspect in this story weaves in and out. It waxes and wanes. But The undercurrents it provides sets up for the turning point, and sets up an excellent continuation of the story. I do not think many readers will particularly like Ethan, but Amanda, Joe, Chiara and Tim are wonderfully written. There is some great action. They are also young adults trying to find their way and figure things out in a very difficult situation and time.
This will be great for fans of similar works such as The Liberty series by Theresa Linden, Watchful Sky series by Roger Thomas, will likely enjoy this book. It is not as extreme as the I Am Margaret series by Corinna Turner but feels like it could head that way. This was a great follow up novel and one that really sets the tone for the next volume in the series.
Journey Through Lent - Clement Harrold - Reflections on the Daily Mass Readings
Journey Through Lent:
ISBN 9781645851950
This volume was available for free as a download if you signed up for Scott Hahn’s weekly Lenten reflections. The two went together wonderfully. I very much enjoyed and was blessed by reading the daily reflections in this book. Each week on Wednesdays links were sent out for three new video’s of Scott Hahn speaking. Each week was three videos and about an hour across the three. The weeks were:
Lord, Have Mercy
First Comes Love
The Family Prayer
The Lamb's Supper
Consuming the Word
The Fourth Cup
The reflections in the book are based on the day of Lent, not the year they were published so it can be used again. The book contains 40 reflections from Ash Wednesday through to Holy Saturday, and a reflection 5 Sundays of Lent and one for Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. For a total of 46 reflections. After the reflections is a collection of Bonus Materials:
Promise & Fulfillment Series
Lord, Have Mercy:
     The Healing Power of Confession
First Comes Love:
     What Is the Catholic Gospel?
The Family Prayer:
     Understanding Our Father
The Lamb’s Supper
Consuming the Word
The Fourth Cup
Endnotes
The talks, the reflections and the bonus materials fit seamlessly together and made for a wonderful Lenten resource or mini daily retreat. I greatly enjoyed Clement Harrold’s reflections and would be interested check out any future book from his pen. A sample reflection is:
DAY 7
Wednesday of the
First Week of Lent
Reading I: Jonah 3:1–10
Psalm: 51:3–4, 12–13, 18–19
Gospel: Luke 11:29–32
Today’s readings are a tale of two generations. On the one hand, we have the generation of Nineveh, which, caught up in its evil ways, finally repents at the promptings of the prophet Jonah. On the other hand, we have the generation of Jesus’s own day, which He describes as an evil generation for its lack of faith and repentance (see Luke 11:29).
On judgement day, Our Lord tells us, the holy men of Nineveh and the queen of the south will rise and condemn that generation for its wicked ways. But what of our own day and age? Are we any different?
Looking at the world around us, it appears that the tragic answer, if anything, is that ours is an even worse generation. Evangelical pastor Rick Warren, in a September 2015 address to the World Meeting of Families, expressed it well when he said, “In today's society, materialism is idolized, immorality is glamorized, truth is minimized, sin is normalized, divorce is rationalized, and abortion is legalized.
“In TV and movies, crime is legitimized, drug use is minimized, comedy is vulgarized, and sex is trivialized. In movies, the Bible is fictionalized, churches are satirized, God is marginalized, and Christians are demonized. The elderly are dehumanized, the sick are euthanized, the poor are victimized, the mentally ill are ostracized, immigrants are stigmatized, and children are tranquilized.
“In families around the world, our manners are uncivilized, speech is vulgarized, faith is secularized, and everything is commercialized.”1
This is the world in which we live, and the words of the first pope, St. Peter, remain as relevant today as they were in the first century: “Save yourselves from this crooked generation” (Acts 2:40).
As Christians we were born to stand out! Like Jonah, by virtue of our baptism, we have been given a prophetic mission, and ours is the task of proclaiming the truth and light of the Gospel to this broken world of ours.
What does it mean to be in the world, but not of the
world? Am I living this out successfully?”
This was a great resource for Lent. I would be interested in doing it again another year with a group, maybe getting together weekly to watch the videos, or just discussion the readings and reflections. It was a real blessing to me during this third Lent of the Pandemic. And It was wonderful that the PDF was available for free, or you could order the physical copy for a very reasonable price if you wished. I just wished there was a eBook format or Kindle, ePub, or Mobi available.
A great resource for Lent, either for personal, family or communal use.
Thicker than Water - J.D. Kirk - DCI Logan Book 2
Thicker than Water
DCI Logan Book 2
ISBN 9781912767137
ASIN B07R43X1Y3
ASIN B08QDQDXMC
This is the third volume from J.D. Kirk that I have read in the last few months. I picked the first for a few reasons, but mainly because authors Alex Smith and JE Mayhew have both recommended the author and series. I am a big fan of Smith’s DCI Kett novels and Mayhew’s DCI Will Blake Series. And having ripped through both of their series and slowing working through all of Mayhew’s others works I decided to give Kirk’s a try. These definitely are Scottish Detective Mysteries, and I can see the comparisons with both Smith and Mayhew’s works. I would set this story right in the middle, Smiths are darker and more brutal, and Mayhew’s typically focused a little more on the mystery. This one is a good mix of both.
The description of this novel is:
“Not all monsters are make-believe.
When a badly mutilated body washes up on the shores of Loch Ness, DCI Jack Logan's dream of a quiet life in the Highlands is shattered.
While the media speculates wildly about monster attacks, Jack and the Major Investigations Team must act fast to catch the killer before they can strike again.
But with Nessie-hunters descending on the area in their dozens, and an old enemy rearing his ugly head, the case could well turn out to be the most challenging of Jack's career.
And, if he isn't careful, the last.
Death and dark humour combine in this fast-paced Tartan Noir crime thriller set in the Highlands of Scotland.”
This book is set some time after A Little of Bones, DCI Logan has not even been at his new post a day when he is called out on a new case. There are some characters I have encountered in Kirk’s other writings, specifically Detective Superintendent Hoon who I have encountered in Northwind and the Family Liaison Officer, Sinead from Bones
This story has action, a lot of misdirection, and a very interesting twist. I had figured out about 80% of it before the reveals, but even after I had it solved it was fun watching Logan figure it out and put the pieces together, and watching the officer’s work to capture the culprits. I stated before that the characters are believable, and the events unfortunately are also. The ritual elements in the case took a while to piece together. I am unfamiliar with the history of Bosco, the Russian crime lord, but I am certain we will encounter him again over some of the other stories.
After having read the first two DCI Logan books and the first in the Robert Hoon Series I know I will be reading all the books published buy this author under the pen name J.D. Kirk. Like Mayhew and Smith, Kirk publishes under various names. Kirk publishes children books as Barry Hutchison, and other adult fiction as Barry J. Hutchison. He is coming up on 175 books across the three pen names. I did not know that or I might not have picked up this first one. Friends call me a ‘completionist’ in that when I find an author I like, I try to read everything they have published. Before I even finished the first Kirk novel I had picked up book 1 in the spin off Robert Hoon series and the next few in this one. Now I am aiming for a book a week until I finish this series and then will see where it goes. This story is perfect if you love crime procedural books, or books along the lines of the TV Series The Commander or Wired in the Blood, this would be a great story to pick up. It is an excellent mystery and I love that it is set in Scotland! It is a good read in what is shaping up like an excellent series. I highly recommend it.
Please Don't Feed the Dinosaurs - Corinna Turner - unSPARKed Book 1 (Redux)
Please Don't Feed the Dinosaurs
unSPARKed Book 1
Corinna Turner
Unseen Books
ISBN 9781910806753
eISBN 9781910806777
ASIN B09X24LR39
First an announcement, this is not a brand new book one, it is the reworking of the original book 1 Drive!, and one of the prequel stories A Dino Whisperer at the Zoo. I have read the original story Drive! 4 times, and my son has read it to me twice. And as much as I love the original versions of these two stories, this one reworks them in such a way that it is even more AWEsome and FANtastic!
I said it before, series keeps getting better and better. I first read a story by Turner in 2017, and read the first in this series in 2015. Since then I have read book by her a total of 53 times, and unSPARKed stories 26 of them. My son who is a reluctant reader has read most of the stories in this series more than once. The day this one released I picked up the eBook for myself and a physical copy for my son. But before I started reading it A Right Rex Rodeo unSPARKed Book 6 released and I read it first. The day the physical copy arrived he wanted to ditch the book he was on and start this right away. Then 2 days later book 6 arrived. I let him start book 6 that day (Yes I could not wait and had already read it.) These are excellent stories for teens, young adults and adults. And the series keeps getting better and better! It has real staying power.
As mentioned in this volume the original story, Drive!, and one of the prequel stories A Dino Whisperer at the Zoo, was rewritten into Please Don't Feed the Dinosaurs. In doing so Turner has merged the two main story arc’s right from the beginning. When recommending the series I often describe it as a mashup of Mad Max, Lost World, and Jurassic Park, and I have recommended it to many, all who have enjoyed them. We even bought a full set for my son’s school library.
unSPARKed is a series set in a not-too-distant future. Dinosaurs once again roam the earth. Just because a scientist could do something, did not mean they should have done it. Most people live SPARKed, in cities with walls and electrified fences. There are two groups of people who live unSPARKed, farmers who have electric fences around their farms and live in community with their close neighbours. And Hunters who live most of the time out on the road or off road in HabVI’s Habitat Vehicles.
The description of this volume is:
In A Jurassic Future, Some Still Choose Freedom—Despite The Dangers.
It takes more than a T. rex scratching its back on his Habitat Vehicle to alarm young hunter Joshua—he’s used to living close to nature. But a routine visit to the zoo to deliver a new velociraptor turns deadly when he comes face-to-face with an eleven-foot allosaur called Gold. He knew her when she was a tiny chick—is he a friend from the past—or dinner?
Meanwhile, Darryl and her brother, Harry, are taken completely by surprise when their father remarries. Their new step-mom is a glamorous fashion designer who’s never been outside the city’s electric fences. How will she cope with a life of dinosaur farming? All Darryl can do is try to get her new stepmom safely to the farm. But once you’re unSPARKed, things don’t always go to plan…”
The story is told in a series of first person narrative chapters. And there is a wide range in chapter length. The chapters alternate between Joshua and Darryl.
Our main characters are:
William: father of Darryl and Harry. At least third generation farmer. Works hard, loves God and his family. Madly in love with his new bride.
Carol: Fashion designer, former city dweller. Married to Harold, and step mom to Darryl and Harry. Never lived out city.
Darryl: 16 and a half years old. Raised on a farm. Does not enjoy the city. And Harry’s big sister. Devote Catholic. Deep faith. A brave strong young woman.
Harry: Darryl’s younger brother. Eager to learn. A farm boy at heart. A youngster of faith, and strong work eithic.
Joshua: He was raised unSPARKed, lived his whole life from the day he was born in a Habitat Vehicle. He was raised by his father and uncle. Both deceased. Can’t stand being in city.
Joshua does not encounter any of the Franklyn’s in this story but will in a few volumes. For those just starting out in the unSPARKed universe this is the new book one. It will introduce you to the key player through 6 novels and a few short stories, that are available to date. If you have already encountered the stories, this is an excellent rewriting of the beginning of the series. Turner states in the intro to this one that:
“Long-term unSPARKed readers, please don’t be caught out—this isn’t an all-new unSPARKed tale!
Please Don’t Feed the Dinosaurs knits together two books previously published separately—the original book 1, DRIVE!, and the short story ‘A Dino Whisperer at the Zoo’—along with a small amount of original material, in order to make a better introduction to the series.”
Even though I knew the story, I stayed up way too late reading this through the first time. It is masterfully written. This is an excellent new beginning to an amazing series. I consider it unSPARKed 01 Redux. And Turner has rebranded the unSPARKed logo and all the covers to match this new version of these stories. But be warned you will be desperate for the net volume. It is a great book by an excellent author.
Loving Christ Through St Josemaría Escrivá - Holly Melita Rodriguez
Loving Christ Through St Josemaría Escrivá
Holly Melita Rodriguez
ISBN 9798782289874
ASIN B09NGXSXGK
The author had indicated at the time of release of this book in December of 2021 that she was working on a digital edition. With my dual form of dyslexia I greatly prefer eBooks so I can change the font, font colour, and even page colour to make it easier to read. That digital version was delayed and still has not arrived. So I decided to read the book over Lent. The book is self-published it does not have any copyright information, nor does it have a table of contents, it would benefit from both. The author on social media admits to being on the spectrum. She has been discerning vocation and is starting a noviciate with the Carmelites in California. This volume was released I believe just prior to her acceptance. And She had travelled and is on her way there now. She had announced another volume her spiritual biography, or conversion story but I do not know a date or time for such a release. And her social media accounts have been disabled. But back to this volume. The description of this book is:
“Embark on a forty day journey through the desert with Christ and this book as your companion of reflections by St Josemaría Escrivá for each daily intention, along with prayers written by the Author, daily devotion to the Holy Rosary and contemplation on Sacred Scripture. As you journey through each daily exercise in prayer and contemplation, you will also witness the life of The Father of Opus Dei through a photographic biography.
You will strengthen your prayer life, grow in your devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and find daily exercises for common struggles. If you’re looking for a fruitful yet challenging way to grow in holiness and renew your faith, with the spiritual guidance and wisdom of St Josemaría Escrivá, then look no further...
This is a devotional prayer book and contains an option for readers to consecrate themselves to Jesus Christ through the spiritual guidance of one of the greatest Catholic Saint’s of the 20th century, Josemaría Escrivá.”
The introduction begins with these words:
“I wrote this book over the course of forty days from Christmas until Candlemas during the year 2020. The writings within these pages are from my personal diary as I journeyed for forty days in the desert with Our Lord, Jesus Christ in prayer and contemplation. Within these pages you will find reflections by St Josemaría Escrivá for each daily intention, along with prayers I’ve written and sacred scripture to contemplate on. Each day is devoted to Our lady through the Holy Rosary, as a way to grow closer to Christ through the guidance of St Josemaría Escrivá. I hope that you will find spiritual growth and a strengthened prayer life through these exercises. There is a consecration prayer at the end of the journey, which I have written for those who wish to consecrate themselves to St Josemaría Escrivá and adopt him as a companion for spiritual guidance and intercession.”
Each of the days follow the same format:
And on everyday there is a cropped version of the cover photo before the Prayer to St Josemaría Escrivá, and the day ends with a photo of Saint Josemaría Escrivá with caption and date. After the Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe there is a drawing of the Tilma, I believe by the author. I used a random number picker and a sample day is:
Day Twenty-Five: Prudence.
“Such wisdom of the heart, such prudence will never become the prudence of the flesh that St Paul speaks of, the prudence of those who are intelligent but try not to use their intelligence to seek and love Our Lord. A truly prudent person is ever attentive to God's promptings, and, through this vigilant listening, he receives in his soul the promise and reality of salvation: I glorify Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for having hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to little ones.”
-St Josemaría Escrivá
Prayer Intention
Lord Jesus Christ, I desire to exercise genuine prudence which is not self-serving or cunning, but discerning and helps me to grow in my faith. Through attending the sacraments, Mass, and praying the Holy Rosary, I can learn to be more prudent and discerning so that I make the right choices which are focused on serving You and putting my trust in You, dear Lord
.
“The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps. The wise person fears and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and overconfident. A quick-tempered person does foolish things, and a devious man is hated. The naive inherit folly, but the careful are crowned with knowledge.”
- Proverbs 14:15-18
Dear Lord, I humbly beg You, through the intercession of St Josemaría Escrivá, for the grace to fill my spirit with prudence so that I may carefully discern each step I take down the path which You have laid out for me to follow. The path to Sainthood and sanctifying my every day ordinary life, is greatly enriched by exercising prudence, not being overindulgent or impulsive but by following You, Lord Jesus.
Prayer to St Josemaría Escrivá
Most loving God, through the mediation of Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin, You chose St Josemaría Escrivá to serve You and honour you. You have gifted St Josemaría Escrivá the wisdom and grace to form Opus Dei, a way of sanctification in daily work and in the fulfilment of the Christian’s ordinary life and duties. Grant that I too may learn to turn my everyday life into one that serves You God, and imitates the way of St Josemaría Escrivá with a zeal for loving all souls and striving for sanctification. Grant unto me God, through the intercession of St Josemaría Escrivá the favour of (intention).
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”
- John 16:13
Holy Rosary of Joyful Mysteries
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified; died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Five Joyful Mysteries are prayed
Monday and Saturday.
The Joyful Mysteries remind the faithful of Our Lady’s Fiat and Christ’s birth:
The Annunciation (Luke 1:26–38); The Visitation (Luke 1:39–56)
The Nativity (Luke 2:1–21); The Presentation (Luke 2:22–38) The
Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41–52)
Hail Holy Queen
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation; grant we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord.
Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mystical Rose, make intercession for the Holy Church, protect the Sovereign Pontiff, help all those who invoke thee in their necessities, and since thou art the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Mother of the True God, obtain for us from thy most holy Son the grace of keeping our faith, of sweet hope in the midst of the bitterness of life, of burning charity, and the most precious gift of perseverance so that we may carry our cross cheerfully.”
Each day is 6 pages including the photo at the end of the chapter. Many of the photo’s in this volume I had not seen before. Or at least do not recall doing so. I have read many books by and about Saint Josemaría Escrivá, and consider this a worthwhile read. This volume was a good book to work through during Lent. It can easily be done over any 40 days in the year, or even over 40 weeks. It there was a table of contents, or index it could be used for specific needs from time to time in a more accessible manner.
Overall I would say this a good volume, and with a little polish could be excellent. I would not hesitate to pick up the authors announce book if it ends up being released. I was blessed by reading this book, It was wonderful to spend 40 days reading quotes by, praying to, and reading reflections on Josemaría Escrivá.
