Turner has long been one of my favourite contemporary authors, and the fact that she writes Catholic fiction just makes it even better! My son and I are always terribly excited when we learn a new volume from Turner is about to be released, and it always jumps to the top of our reading list when it does. I read my first volume from Turner 10 years ago and I have read books by her 79 times since then, and that does not even count her contributions to anthologies. And this is another excellent offering!

The description of this volume states:

“THIS DAY HAS NOT GONE HOW I EXPECTED.

It's supposed to be a simple trip to Technicolor Camp for Wilhelm Fenn's burial. But a near-deadly brush with some wildlife, and an even more unexpected encounter with some other humans, leaves Josh facing a difficult and dangerous decision that could risk the lives of not just himself, but Darryl, Harry, and everyone they love.”

When I am recommending this series, which happens often, I frequently describe it as a mashup of Mad Max, Lost World, and Jurassic Park, and I have recommended it to many, all who have enjoyed them. In many ways it is like 50 years after Jurassic World Dominion. We have even bought a full set for my son’s school library and know from the Librarian that they are very popular.

unSPARKed is a series set in a not-too-distant future. Dinosaurs once again roam the earth. Just because a scientist could do something, did not mean they should have done it. Most people live SPARKed, in cities with walls and electrified fences. There are two groups of people who live unSPARKed, farmers who have electric fences around their farms and live in community with their close neighbours. The other are Hunters who live most of the time out on the road or off road in HabVI’s Habitat Vehicles. This is one of their stories.

Some time has passed since the last story. And this story follows a road trip as Joshua, Darryl, Harry and Father Ben are headed out to a hunter funeral. On the way there they have a strange encounter; one that to some extent has a lasting impact on each of them. But Joshua has the biggest challenge. Can he hear the still small voice, through his hurt, his pain, his anger, and through his prejudices because experiences with a specific Hunter clan.

In this volume the growing feelings between Joshua and Darryl become even more apparent, even though both are hesitant. Harry struggles with anger and unforgiveness. And Father Ben is trying to guide his flock through a very challenging time. But as family and friends come together to support Joshua in the burial and services for the dead, he comes to a realization and it is not one most will like. The story is told in a series of first person narratives. There are:

None of the chapters were from father Ben’s perspective. It was wonderful spending time with these characters. It is like a visit with old friends. And this time the group is at a hunter camp for most of the story, and we learn a lot more about hunter traditions; specifically around burying the dead. One of the works of mercy.

We were desperate to find out what was going to happen next, and boy oh boy did this novel ever deliver! Turner has proved a master of numerous genres. But this series will always be deer to our hearts! This is an excellent offering in an incredible series, one we can easily recommend!
