Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory
Murderbot Diaries Book 0.5
I have read the first seven novels and novellas in this series. As I await the release of the eight I am going back and reading the 4 short stories. Two are prequels and two falls between other works. This one calls between books 4 and 5. I am thankful I gave this series a try, it was highly recommended from Arthur Slade. I read this volume and the other 4 shorter works on the same day.
The earlier stories in this series were novellas then a full length novel and now back in the novel range for book 7. All of the stories in this series are excellent reads. And I was excited find out after reading book 7 that an eighth volume has been announced for release early in 2026.
The description of this instalment is:
“"Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory" is a short story set in the world of Martha Well's bestselling and Hugo award-winning series, The Murderbot Diaries.
Told from the perspective of Dr. Mensah, the events of "Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory" occurs just after the fourth novella, Exit Strategy.”
In this one we are informed about the author that:
“Martha Wells has written many fantasy novels, including The Wizard Hunters, Wheel of the Infinite, the Books of the Raksura series (beginning with The Cloud Roads and ending with The Harbors of the Sun), and the Nebula-nominated The Death of the Necromancer, as well as YA fantasy novels, short stories, and non-fiction.”
This story was originally in a short story available from Tor.com. This particular story is available online as an eBook I do not believe there is currently an audio book edition. Short fiction is a different art form that writing novels and very short fiction like this is also a different skill. Wells is a master of all three, and has all three in the Murderbot Universe.
This is an interesting read set in this universe. This one is told from the perspective of Dr. Mensah. It is about her and her interactions with her people, Murderbot and her own unresolved trauma from her kidnapping. I really enjoyed all the things Murderbot tried to requisition, and then how Mensah interacted with him about it finally. It is interesting seeing events from her side. And it gives us a different picture of Murderbot.
This is an excellent short story and the longest of the 4 short pieces I read back to back. If you are a fan of the series this is a must read. If you are not and start here it might just hook you.
A great story I can easily recommend.
