This is the fourth anthology from the authors at the Catholic Teen Books collective. Each has been a great read. This Lenten volume is also, to be honest, my favourite of the four now. Normally, one of the things I love about reading anthologies, is discovering new authors. That was not the case this time. I have read books by all of the contributors. In fact, at the time of writing this review, I have over 100 reviews and articles from authors that are part of the CTB group. I knew I was in for some great reading when I picked up this collection. And I had some high expectations, based on the contributors and the previous three anthologies. And yet even with those high expectations, I was incredibly impressed with this collection and, to be honest, each story within it. Often when I read an anthology, there are a few great reads, some good reads, and some okay reads. That was not the case this time. Each story was a remarkable. I read the volume, reading 1 story a day. And then as soon as I finished, I used adaptive technology and listened to each of them.

In the foreword for Secrets, Visible & Invisible, the first anthology in this series, Mark Hart of Life Teen International states:

“We call Him Savior, Teacher, Wonder Worker, and Lord. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Bread of Life and the Light of the World. He is the Messiah, the Promised One, the Divine Physician…the Good Shepherd. Jesus Christ is all of these titles and an endless list of more. Yet, there is one title that I’ve rarely – if ever – heard used to describe Jesus of Nazareth, and I feel it is a glaringly myopic omission on our part. Almost never have I heard Jesus Christ described as “Master Storyteller,” though He most certainly was.”

Many of the contributors to this collections, in their own way, imitate Christ and are master storytellers in our own generation. I have a great deal of respect for the ten authors who contributed to this series. And a couple of them are among my all time favourite authors. And I read a couple hundred books a year. This is a collection of 10 faith filled stories by 10 great authors.

In this collection we have one short story from each of the contributors. Some contain characters you can encounter in novels by the authors. Some are from books and series that have been around for a few years and others to recent releases or forthcoming works.

As previously mentioned this is a great collection of short stories. I really could not pick a favourite or least favourite. Each story is very well written. And I thoroughly enjoyed them all. 

For fans of any of the authors in this collection, you need to pick this book up to read their contribution. For readers who love remarkable stories, this collection is for you also. And if you want some great reads that are clean Catholic fiction this is the book for you. This anthology is Amazing!

(Note this book does not release until January 2023. It will be worth the wait. I am already planning on rereading it.)

This is one of three short stories set in the Saint Tommy NYPD world that released just before the final novel. This is the only one written by a different author. Josh Griffing has written a story that fits seamlessly into the Saint Tommy Story arc. The three published short stories in the series. I reached out to Finn to find out where they would fit in the series:

Thus making this the final story in this world, at least to date. Finn has indicated their may be side stories in the future by the main story is completed. Over the last few months I have read 18 books by Declan, and I had read one prior to that. I have loved what I have read to date. And I have plans to read all that I can lay my hands on. Both the Saint Tommy and the White Ops series are greatly entertaining, and I cannot wait for the Pius trilogy of 5 books to be back in print (hint hint, nudge, nudge). This is a very intriguing story in this series. And Josh did and excellent job staying true to the characters and world building

The description of this story is:

“It's a simple job. Those are the worst kind.

Basic Method Three is to make chaos, exploit it, resolve it, and take the credit. It should be straightforward, and without Saint Tommy around, it shouldn't take all week.

Lim Tong, head of Division Four, Beijing's agency for tracing and acquiring supernatural weaponry, brought his team through the Blue Saint incident with only a fraction of their force left and nothing to show for it. So when the Politburo gets a lead on the Holy Grail itself coming to a golf course down in Georgia, the Division heads down South for a chance at redemption.

But capturing the most famous relic in Christendom takes more than a simple smash-and-grab. And the Grail has powers of its own.”

In some ways this story fits between the end of Blue Saint, Saint Tommy Book 12, and Epilogue: Devil’s Advocate. Or it fits in as part of that Epilogue or the events to soon follow. The main part of this story is an action short story with a battle between Tommy’s son and ward and the Chinese agents. The lead agent falls from grace and Saint Tommy and a saint who appears to Tommy appear and rescue Lim. 

About the authors we are informed:

“Declan Finn is the NYC based author of books ranging from thrillers to urban fantasy to SciFi, including the Dragon Award Nominated Novel for Best horror in 2016, Honor at Stake, and the 2017 follow-up, Live and Let Bite. He was also nominated for "Best Apocalypse" novel at the Dragons in 2017. He also won the book of the year award with his novel Hell Spawn from CLFA.  

Finn is known for being annoyingly Catholic, his action sequences, and writing faster than most readers can keep up with. In less than a decade, he has written 30 novels, and is waiting for all of them to be published. He's been part of multiple anthologies, and will write for anyone. He is also not allowed to enter Italy ever again for reasons he is more than happy to tell everyone about whenever he gets the chance.”

“Josh Griffing is a demolition worker and an Army Reservist in Georgia who writes when he can, and reads whenever he can get away with it. He has three kids, four insolent cats, and a dog and a half. Amazingly, his wife is still very nearly sane, and for this he is eternally grateful. His stories have appeared in Tuscany Bay's Planetary anthologies (Sol, Earth, and Luna, © 2020, 2021), and in Superversive Press's charity anthology Impossible Hope, © 2019.”

I do not believe I have read anything by Josh, but do have a few of the anthologies he has contributed to. But I will be intrigued to read them. For this was an excellent story. For any fans of the Saint Tommy series this is a great addition to the canon.

This book was on my wish list for a long time. It was originally published as an eBook in 2000, then reprinted as a print book in 2008 by The Writers’ Café Press. By the time I went to track it down both were out of print. And hard to find. But it was well worth tracking down.

Religious-themed science fiction is not a new genre, from classics like A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr., to nearly anything from Gene Wolfe. One of the best known collections was edited by Fr. Andrew M. Greeley called Sacred Visions. Yet this new volume of 14 short stories in the genre of Christian or Catholic Science Fiction is a treat for the fan of the genre. The authors tackle themes of morality, science, and the role of religion in humanity's future in new and engaging ways.

All three are excellent collections, and I cannot but hope the two release other anthologies in the future. The description of this collection is:

“Leaps of Faith is an anthology of inspirational science fiction. The 15 short stories cover the entire spectrum of the genre, from time travel to space exploration; hard sci-fi to alien encounters. For the first time in print, Leaps of Faith was originally published as an e-book that was a 2004 EPPIE award finalist. The beginning of the introduction to the second edition states:

“When Rob and I put this book together back in 2000, it was, in part, an expression of our frustration at the lack of quality Christian science fiction, or just science fiction that acknowledged Christian faith and values. As readers, we didn’t want lectures, whether evangelization disguised as plot or the portrayal of a perfect world that has embraced God. Faith is more complicated—and more interesting—than that.

Apparently, we were not alone. Writers of all areas of speculative fiction—sci-fi, fantasy and horror—have also felt disgruntled about the limited number of publishers willing to take a chance on such genres bearing a Christian message, or willing to reflect a universe created by and inhabited by the God of the Bible. Like us, they went out and did something about it.

It’s only been eight years—six since Leaps of Faith was published as an e-book by FrancisIsidore press—but in that time, the genre/ subgenre/ ideal of Christian speculative fiction has blossomed.

Small press publishers, like The Writers’ Café Press, Idylls Press, and Marcher Lord Press (launching in October) specialize in Christian speculative fiction. At the writing of this review it is now 22 years since the first publication of this volume, and 14 since the print edition was released. I consider it a great loss that this volume is no longer available as I know many readers who would enjoy it. In part because the stories are excellent. And in part because some of the authors have much larger followings now and these early stories can be lost in time. These stories are full of faith, they are engaging and they are fun. I have read stories by a few of the contributors previously. And a few were my first encounter with the author. Three stories that stood out in particular for me were:

The Faith Equation - Peter Bell
The Relics of Venice - Leslie Brown
Sometimes We Lie -Barton Levenson

The first deals with Faith when it is not faith but science fact. The second with a skeptic, a priest, and a devoted young man, including a very surprising twist at the end. And the third with the most alien of creatures and cultures and their encounter with the gospel. 

But even with those stand out stories I can state there is not a bad story in the collection. And it is a volume I will likely return to in a few months and give another read. And I am now on the hunt for books or other stories from a couple of the authors I had not encountered previously. 

This collection will be a treat to any fan of Science Fiction, fans of Christian or Catholic Science Fiction, or just someone interested in the questions of spirituality and our future as we move forward through the millennium. This is an excellent anthology. If you can track down a copy, I encourage you to do so for it is an excellent read!

I was recently asked if I had ever read and reviewed any books in this series, at the time I had not. I read Joseph the Huron by Antoinette Bosco first and loved it so much I have now read this one and already have 2 others in my to be read pile. Several volumes in the series grabbed my attention. I was asked by someone who had enjoyed my reviews of the Encounter the Saints books by Pauline Books and Media, and who was following now my reviews on the Vision Books for Young Readers now from Ignatius Press to read and review come books in this series. I am very thankful they did, my plan is to read about 1 a week until I have finished the 18 currently available, I hope by then there will be more volumes in the series available. I will note these versions are not available on Amazon, but are very reasonable from the publisher in print or eBook editions. This volume was originally published in 1963 by P. J. Kenedy & Sons. This edition from Bethlehem Books is revised, it has added maps, and other additional material was released in 2016. It is part of the Portraits in Faith and Freedom series and is part of Set 3 Spanish And Mexican Heroes. Over the last few years I have read a few volumes about Catholics in Mexico specifically in and around the time of the Cristero War, and this one has fueled my desire to read even more about those times. Based on how good the two volumes I have read so far have been, I plan on reading all in the set and likely all in the whole series.

The description of this volume is:

“There are two doorways into the life of the gallant Mexican priest Padre Pro. One doorway begins at the end, during an intense period of anti-Catholicism in Mexico, in the high public drama of a daring young priest’s use of disguises and audacious risks to secretly carry communion to the faithful, with his subsequent capture and courageous death. The other doorway starts in the heart of Miguel’s closely knit, devout family. Born in 1891, by fifteen, Miguel is at once a beloved son and a mischievous rascal. Rather than attending school far away from the affectionate society of his sisters and brothers, he assists his father, an agent assigned to a remote mining camp in Zacatecas. His family begins to worry when at twenty the generous, yet often moody, young man still has no idea about the direction his future should take. Then he knows. Miguel’s journey to the priesthood is plagued by difficulties and setbacks that temper and transform the mischievous youth into Padre Pro, a man ready to lay down his life for Christ his King. Blessed Miguel Pro dies before a firing squad in Mexico City in 1927, this last unforgettable triumph-in-death photographed for posterity by his very enemies. Those sections at the beginning of the book are excellent for helping young readers, for use in the classroom or for home schooling. The downloadable resources are top quality. And the additional information at both the beginning and end of the story are greatly beneficial for readers of all ages. There are several subjects in this series that I am familiar with a few I have read a number of books about. This was my first encounter with Padre Pro, in fact because of my dyslexia I first read the title as Padre Pio, but reread it after reading the subtitle of Mexican Her . I devoured this volume over a few sittings. I just could not put it down. It is a story of the faith and devotion that grew from a rocky start. It is a story of great faith, devotion and sacrifice. 

The writing is engaging, and the biography is wonderfully written. It was well researched,The Historical Insights section at the end of the volume is a great starting point for young readers. It is a wonderful story of faith, commitment to family, friends, and service and. In the Historical insights section, we are informed that:

“In the end, the hatred of Calles & company for the Catholic faith wasn’t due to the existence of a fat bishop or two, nor of perceived historic wrongs. It was that the Catholic Faith, even without material or political advantages, was still firmly ingrained in the culture of Mexico, and forever written in the hearts of the people. Poor Calles! He could not see what the people saw: that despite the Church’s human failings, Jesus Christ—poor, despised and suffering with them—was incarnate there. Jesus Christ, who was granting them dignity and hope in a way that no political leader ever could, because He, the God of Heaven, had once come to earth to be one of them. And continued to come to them in the Blessed Eucharist, so long as courageous priests like Miguel Pro were in their midst. It is no wonder that the people of Mexico, poor and powerless as they were, could endure all things until the powers that be became too tired to fight back any longer.”

This book, and series is attempting to bring back into print a volume that is a great read for tweens and teens today. It is also another important read for us older folks. The example of Padre Pro’s faith and growth is inspiring. This is a volume any Catholic would benefit from reading and it leaves you desperate to read others in the set and the series. Another excellent read that I can easily recommend.

As you can tell by the title this is one of three volumes with reflections for each Sunday of the three year cycle of the Catholic Church. This was the first I have read, I do have the other two. I greatly wished these were available in digital format but I found out from the CTS that they do not have permissions for eBooks of the scriptures contained within. I believe that is a great pity, I would love to have the three of these as eBooks. I have now read several of the volumes from the Catholic Truth Society in the CTS Scriptures Series. All of the ones I have read prior to this have an introduction by Dom Henry Wansbrough OSB. The ones I have read prior to finishing this are:

The Acts of the Apostles (Introduction)

This one has a two page spread for each Sunday and a couple of feast days in the church year. There are 57 reflections in this volume. Each two page spread has the Gospel for that day and facing it a reflection by Dom Henry. Each of the Gospel pages is outlined by the colour of vestments for that day. This is the only volume that has been rebranded to date. But Year A and B are still available in older editions. The description of this volume is:

“Fr Wansbrough guides the reader through each of the Sunday gospels during Year C, from Advent to the end of the liturgical year on the feast of Christ the King (the last Sunday before Advent). Each gospel passage is accompanied by a succinct commentary on the story and the place of God’s love in Christ’s ministry and in our own lives – as his disciples.”

And the product page informed us that:

Year C falls in the following years:
Advent 2021 – Christ the King 2022
Advent 2024 – Christ the King 2025
Advent 2027 – Christ the King 2028

I have already tucked this volume away to reread it again in 2 years. And will likely cycle through the three volumes a few times. I want to call out that Dom Henry was the chief editor of the work of The Revised New Jerusalem Bible Study Edition, This volume uses that translation for the Gospel passages. There is no real introduction or forward to any of the three volumes in this set. This one has a brief note about Dom Henry and the source material at the beginning. The other two have it at the end. About Dom Henry we are informed:

“Dom Henry Wansbrough, OSB, is a renowned biblical scholar who regularly writes exegesis and reflections on scripture. He recently completed a new translation of the Bible, the Revised New Jerusalem Bible. He is a Benedictine based at Ampleforth Abbey.” 

We are also given a brief history of the Jerusalem Bible Translation and in the acknowledgements it states:

“CTS gratefully acknowledges the publishers of The Sunday Word for their permission to reproduce some of Fr Wansbrough's material in this publication.”

A Sample reflection is:

“LUKE 3:1-6

In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the lands of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the pontificate of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. He went through the whole Jordan district proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of sayings of the prophet Isaiah:
A voice cries in the wilderness:
Prepare a way for the Lord,
make his paths straight.
Every valley will be filled in,
every mountain and hill be laid low,
winding ways will be straightened
and rough roads made smooth.
And all mankind shall see the salvation of God.

SECONOD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
The Baptist's Message

This Gospel reading is like a drum-roll at the beginning of a show, building up the excitement. First comes a drumroll of human history, the names of the great rulers of the world. Then comes a drum-roll of God's history, the promise of Isaiah that all the crooked places of the world are to be straightened out.

John the Baptist, a daunting prophetic figure, came out of the desert and stood at the Jordan, catching all the merchants and travellers as they forded the river on the main trading route to the East, intent on their commercial and secular aims. 'No!' he cries, 'you have got to change your standards, take on a different set of values, for something much more important is about to happen.' This is what 'Repent!' means: 'Change your way of life! Get real! Join the community of those who are waiting for the Great Event! The moment of God's mercy is approaching. This is going to change everything and bring in a totally new world.'

If we take John's message seriously we must examine ourselves and our priorities in life. What is important to us? Are we building a community where God's true values are our guiding-lines? Are we making his paths straight and the rough roads smooth?”

I hope that sample reflections give you a feel for the volume. The first edition of this volume was released in 2018. And it was rebranded prior to the edition I sued over 2021/2022. I am now reading A Year With the Bible - 365 Daily Reflections, from Dom Henry and the CTS, which I can also easily recommend.

It was wonderful to read these reflections over the year. I tried to read them during the week and again on Sunday Evening before bed. I found that having read these ahead of time helped me to interact with the Gospel more on Sunday’s even if it was not the focus of the homily. These are great little booklets. It is an excellent resource from the Catholic Truth Society! I just wish that these booklets were available electronically as well. It is great to pick up over the year.
