Fen Dead - Cedar Sanderson - Grounds Keeper Book 6

With the reading of this story it marks 33 times I have read a book or published short story by Sanderson, not counting her contributions to anthologies. I first encountered the works of Cedar in Cracked: An Anthology of Eggsellent Chicken Stories, and after reading her piece there knew I had to track down and read something else from her pen. The first story in this series was that next piece I read and since then I have been slowly working through all of Sanderson’s published works. It is a quest to read everything she has published under various pen names. In that first book Sanderson states:

“This book is dedicated to the Junior Mad Scientist, my pastel goth. May you find your happy place, dear heart.”

Written and dedicated to her own daughter the story is spun off from a chance real life event. The dedication in this volume states:

“For my elder goth friends, Alma and Dorothy, who have inspired me and encouraged me in my writing.”

The story is masterfully written. It was a humorous read with a dark twists, but also a lot we can learn. The book and whole series really grabs your attention and keeps you hooked. I picked up the book as soon as it released and read it the next day. I also ordered a print copy for my youngest daughter who is really enjoying the series as well. The description of this offering is:

“In the misty fen on the edge of town, a murdered man refuses to stay buried.

Chloe Brandt, groundskeeper of Belleview cemetery and reluctant apprentice mediator to the dead, has been called in to help. The deeper she digs into the strange killing, the more she realizes some bindings run deeper than any grave.

Armed with a glowing jar of restless oil, a crew of sectretive gnomes, and more confidence than caution, Chloe must navigate deceptions and dangerous liminal spaces before the fen claims another soul. In a world where even the dead keep secrets, the only way forward is to get your hands dirty.”

The chapters in this offering are:

1. Pansies for Thoughts
2. Soapwort for Intruders
3. Yarrow for Protection
4. Myrtle for Duty
5. Sundew for Surprise
6. Dogbane for Deception
7. Celandine for Communication
8. Maidenhair Fern for Discretion
9. Violet Nightshade for Mentorship
10. Clematis for Study
11. Mock Orange for Recollection
12. Sunflower for Nourishment
13. Acacia for Friendship
14. False Parsley for Gullibility
15. Monkshood for Poisonous Words
16. Holly for Defense
17. Rhubarb for Advice
18. Jonquil for Death
19. Bindweed for Dangerous Situations
20. Sweet Potato for Resolution
Epilogue

The story follows Chloe on her first solo mission. Or as we will learn more her first mission as the lead. Mr. Cruor is away overseas on business, when Belleview receives a call for the police for assistance on a strange case. And though very nervous Chloe resolves to do her best. Along the way she receives assistance from Stella, Trunk and even Mr. Cruor, via calls. She is also dealing with a specific incident at the Cemetery and with the assistance of Padraig and his kin. It even provides some levity and release for Chloe in a very amusing way.

Chloe is really growing into a new role at Belleview Cemetery, and finding her with in The Brotherhood. Her new vocation, a vocation of the work of mercy of burying the dead, and in this case helping them to transition if needed, is never short of surprises. And this one is another excellent story. This volume makes reference to The Brotherhood but also:

“She had figured out her boss was visiting the Brotherhood’s main leadership, but had only a vague idea of where he was in Europe, much less where the Brotherhood was headquartered now. There was, she’d learned during her history lessons with Trunk, another Fraternitas Mortis associated with the Catholic Church, but that was not her Brotherhood.”

As a Catholic myself I cannot help but hope that passion mention is a foreshadowing of something to come. This story moves at a brisk pace and a lot of events transpire. But it is slower than the last volume, with a lot more research, consulting and good old detective work. Chloe settling into her new role, and finding her place in that role, especially as the lead this time.

This story is part of an excellent series, and though the volumes are written sequentially you really could begin with this and then go back and read the earlier books. It is strong enough to stand on its own.

This is yet another masterfully written story from the pen of Sanderson. Excellent characters both alive and dead. A wonderful read. I love this book and series, I want to know what else happens to Chloe and the residents we have encountered and those we have yet to meet at Belleview Cemetery and further beyond. This series is really shaping up into something wonderful, I have read a few of them more than once and after this sixth installment plan to go back and reread them all again this fall. I can easily recommend this book and series. An excellent read!

Dragon Noir - Cedar Sanderson - Pixie for Hire Book 3

This is the 32 time I have read a volume by Sanderson, not counting her contributions to anthologies. I first encountered the works of Cedar in Cracked: An Anthology of Eggsellent Chicken Stories, and after reading her piece there knew I had to track down and read more from her pen. I had picked up, book 1, Pixie Noir, a while ago but had not got around to reading it, recently when Sanderson rebranded these books with new covers, I finally read book 1, a while ago, but had not got around to reading it. It was my loss for not reading these books sooner. When Sanderson rebranded the series with new covers in 2024, I was far more intrigued and started reading book 1 right away. I loved the new covers so much, I even returned my original eBook and bought it again to have the new cover, and I picked up the trilogy with the new covers, before even reading this one. It was well worth the read, and my loss that I had not read it when I first picked it up. And before reading this third in the series a new story release, Following Trouble, which is another Underhill story!

The description of this volume states:

“The pixie with the gun has come home to see his princess crowned a queen and live in peace. But nothing is ever easy for Lom. A gruesome discovery on his doorstep interrupts their plans and sends Lom off on a mission to save not one, but two worlds. It's personal this time and the stakes are higher than ever before. With friends falling and the enemy gathering, Bella and Lom must conquer the worst fears and monsters Underhill can conjure. Failure is not on the agenda.”

About the author we are informed:

“Cedar Sanderson was born an Air Force brat in Nebraska and spent her childhood en route to new duty stations. Her formative years after her father left the Air Force were spent being home-schooled on the Alaskan frontier. She removed to the "more urban" climes of New Hampshire at the beginning of high school. She has had the usual eclectic range of jobs for Fantasy/ SF authors, ranging from Comedy Magician to Apprentice Shepherdess. She counts the latter as more useful in controlling her four children and First Reader. Her fascination with science dates to her early childhood spent with her grandmother on the Oregon coast studying the flora and fauna and learning to prepare a meal from what she could glean from a tidal pool. This lead to a lifelong interest in science, cooking, and herbalism.”

This was another amazing read from Sanderson’s masterful pen. It is a wonderful story of triumph but not without much risk and even war between the high and low courts. Lom has even more work to do and call in favours and friends from both high and low places. After reading the second I stated: “I have clear ideas where the story goes from here and I look forward to finding out if I am correct!” I was indeed correct in a lot but the way it came about was excellent writing.

The characters are incredibly well written. Lom and Bella, again, just wow. Watching them find their place in this new situation. Both of them coming into full bloom. Bella expecting their first child. An encounter with a long lost grandmother. And that mythical library, oh what a role it will play.

It is written in such a way that you become completely enthralled in the story. You will find it nearly impossible to put the book down. The pace is a mix of hurry up and wait, but once the action begins oh my; what action!  This time they must a vengeful ex who has been planning for decades. An evil from above that has been brought low and is being used to turn things upside down. And allies old and new coming to join forces. This story is an excellent third instalment in the trilogy and leaves you wanting more! Fortunately as mention another volume with these characters has since been release.

I have been impressed with all of Sanderson’s writing that I have read to date, and have very much enjoyed her recently works published under the name of Lilania Begley. The quick way I would describe this volume and series is Epic fantasy meets Mike Hammer or Spenser for Hire, with a mix of Martin Brigg’s craziness and planning mixed in! A hard working gal trying to get a job done, a job no one else could likely do, and what a beautiful dame she is. She is a lady with great power, strength of character and brilliant mind. And more than just a few surprises. It was so very hard to put down. Sanderson spin on folk tales, fairy tales, and native legends, woven into the noir mystery and she creates a masterfully written story. It is an epic adventure where myths and legends come to life both above and Underhill. I can easily recommend this novel and series they are great reads.

Child of Crows - Cedar Sanderson - Witchward Book 3

This is the thirty-first volume by Sanderson that I have read. I first encountered the works of Cedar several years back in Cracked: An Anthology of Eggsellent Chicken Stories, and after reading her piece there knew I had to track down and read more from her pen. And to date everything I have read has been entertaining and some have just been amazing stories. The description of this volume states:

“Some ghosts refuse to stay buried.

Fresh from the cursed hollows of Possum Creek, Special Agent Amaya Lombard is yanked back to the one place she swore she’d never return: Nesika House, the coastal coven that once cost her everything. When the high priestess who nearly destroyed her demands help recovering a stolen ritual chalice, Amaya has no choice but to walk through those familiar, poisonous wards — this time with a badge, a partner, and fourteen years of hard-won scars.

What she finds inside is far more dangerous than any illusion.

Child of Crows — a Witchward novella.”

I read this shortly after it released. The previous volume, Possum Creek Massacre, jumped to the top of my ‘to be read’ pile when Sanderson announced this volume in the series was coming out soon. This was another amazing read from Sanderson’s skillful pen. This book and series is a little different than many of her other works I have read. Amaya really reminds me of Annie O'Malley by K.T. Galloway, except Annie uses perception and feelings to help the team and Amaya can sense magic and even track or trace it at times. I read a lot of British and Scottish crime novels the likes of the DCI Kett novels from Alex Smith and the DCI Will Blake novels from J.E. Mayhew. And the DCI Jack Logan books by J.D. Kirk. I have also read all the Reacher offerings from the Child brothers, and I can state this novella is right up there. It nails the police force and investigative vibe, but with that extra element, and a whole lot of surprises.

In this volume we are given a much deeper look into Amaya’s background, history and personal challenges. The characters are incredibly well written. We cannot help but feel for Amaya who appears to be a bridge between 2 worlds or way of seeing the world. Amaya Lombard has recently been drafted into the FBI for a special project. She has returned home to wrap up some loose ends and prep for a move. A move we are not sure is temporary or not. When a skeleton from her past appears and throws a massive curve into the plans. And Amaya finds herself heading to the last place on earth she would ever voluntarily go. Fortunately her former partner has her back, and soon a new adventure begins.

This story is part police procedural, part supernatural, and part finding your place in the world, and it makes for an excellent story! I have been impressed with all of Sanderson’s writing that I have read to date, and have very much also enjoyed her works published under the name of Lilania Begley. This is a great novella in an excellent series. It sets up some interesting options for the announced novel that fall’s next in the series. It is a moving read. I can easily recommend this novella and series. I look forward to the next novel in the series, and hopefully more to come.

Top Ten Fiction and Non-Fiction Books Second Quarter 2026

Top Ten Fiction and Non-Fiction Books Second Quarter 2026

It has been an excellent year for reading so far, not my best to date, but my second best. I averaged under a book and a half a day. Faster than the last few years, and so many books and series I am working through.

In April of 2023 I wrote a piece called How I Read So Much? Because I get asked the question so often, read the piece linked above if you are looking for some ideas on ways to read more.

This quarter I read 110 books and I did not any to the ‘did not finish’ list, one of my highest second quarters since I started keeping track, below is the comparison with the last 10 years:

     2026 - 110
     2025 - 118
     2024 - 78
     2023 – 109
     2022 – 110
     2021 – 104
     2020 – 85
     2019 – 102
     2018 – 102
     2017 – 112
     2016 – 36

Year to date by the numbers:

Books Read: 110
First Time Reads: 86
Fiction: 49
Non-Fiction: 61
5/5 Stars: 79
5 Stars Fiction: 44
5 Stars Non-Fiction: 35

The second quarter of this year was great. I can state again that looking back 2016 is a bit of an outlier as late that year I switched jobs and have since had much better work – life balance. In the spring of 2016, I worked through Brandon Vogt’s course Read More Books Now (now available on ClaitasU). The year before that I removed all games from my phone and tablet and my reading had doubled. This year I received a physical Kindle for Christmas; instead of reading on my phone; and my reading has gone up again.
