I was so excited when I heard about this volume. I have loved the other books in the series, and greatly enjoyed everything I have read by Kathryn Griffin Swegart. It took a while for the eBook, but it was well worth the wait. With my dual form of dyslexia the eBooks make reading so much easier, my son has eye tracking issues and our deacon has low vision. eBooks help with all of these and other issues. 

I picked this book up without reading the description of any review. I have so enjoyed other books from Kathryn that I had no doubt this would be excellent, and it exceeded all expectations. This is the eighth volume by Kathryn that I read and most of them have been read multiple times. This book is a fantastic read. I absolutely loved this book and this series. To be honest both series I have read by Kathryn are excellent. I picked this book up to read even though my children are now passed the reading range. My son loved the other so much he wants to read it after I talked about how great it is. 

So right off the top, even though this book was written with children as the target audience it can be enjoyed by readers of any age. And it will inspire an, encourage, and stoke up the faith of any believer. In our house it is being enjoyed by readers from 15 to 53 years of age.

In the introduction Kathryn states:

“Rescued II takes you all around the world to the top of the Andes Mountains in Chile to the Wild West, where an intrepid nun confronts stagecoach robbers and lynch mobs. Be ready to read an incredible dog story in which teams of dog sleds save the children of an Alaskan town from a deadly epidemic. You will learn about the greatest sea disaster in history: the sinking of the Titanic, and the strange twist of fate that saved the life of an Irish seminarian. On September 11, 2001, terrorists crashed planes into skyscrapers in New York City. Be amazed by the heroic rescue of a woman from the burning World Trade Center tower.”

The Facts Behind the Stories

The chapter on the facts behind the stories is almost as fascinating as the stories themselves. The stories appear in chronological order as they appear in the book. Each story begins with an illustration, and even though Casey Jackson illustrated them all they are done in a wide range of styles. The illustrations help to set up each story in the book. The 9 stories of rescues not only span time but also take place around the world and in a wide variety of circumstances. Kathry states in the introduction:

“Are you ready to read some thrilling stories? Well, buckle your seatbelts. Here we go!”

It is sound advice. I could hardly put the book down. And even after turning out the lights for the night, I ended up picking it up again and reading a 2 more chapters. I just could not put it down.

You could easily read one story a night until the book is completed. And Maybe pair that story with the fact section at the end of the book. If you have that much self-control, I did not! Or you can race through it like I did. But I guarantee it will fascinate and amaze the children in your life, and maybe you as well.

This is another wonderful book from Kathryn’s pen, a great read for readers of all ages!

Prayer for the Beatification and Canonization of Father Emil Kapaun

Lord Jesus,
in the midst of the folly of war,
your servant, Chaplain Emil Kapaun,
spent himself in total service to you
on the battlefields and in the prison camps of Korea,
until his death at the hands of his captors.
We now ask you, Lord Jesus, if it be your will,
to make known to all the world
the holiness of Chaplain Kapaun
and the glory of his complete sacrifice for you
by signs of miracles and peace.
In your name, Lord, we ask,
for you are the source of peace,
the strength of our service to others,
and our final hope. Amen.

Chaplain Kapaun, pray for us!

Note: Every so often I post a prayer I use as part of my daily prayers. I started praying this one a few years ago. My son and I read several volumes about Military chaplains. Fr Kapaun is one we have a specific devotion to. A few have now been named Saints.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. I have read much about Father Emil Kapaun, watched some stuff about him, and have a deep personal devotion to him. My son who at this point wants to be a military chaplain also has a devotion to Kapaun. 

The description of this volume:

“Kapaun's Battle is a powerful testament to the heroism of US Army Chaplain Emil Kapaun (Medal of Honor). The story follows him, from the start of the Korean War until his death as a Prisoner of War in a Communist Chinese Prison Camp in 1951, following the destruction of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Regiment of the US 1st Cavalry Division in November 1950. Written by Screenplay Writer Jess Gress, this is the story of a true American hero.

This is the story of a young man, from a humble Kansas farming family, whose Catholic faith led him to the priesthood. Kapaun became an Army Chaplain in Southeast Asia during World War II and then a parish priest. He volunteered to return to the Army as tensions rose on the Korean Peninsula. It is the story of Father Emil Kapaun's selfless bravery and dedication to the men he ministered to during the Forgotten War.

In 1993, Pope John Paul II declared Father Kapaun a Servant of God, the first stage on the path to canonization. In 2013, Kapaun posthumously received the Medal of Honor from President Obama for his actions in Korea. He was the ninth American military chaplain Medal of Honor recipient.

Although this book is relevant to every freedom-loving American and indeed people worldwide, it is especially intended for the enlightenment of students in schools and universities, along with members of religious congregations and military personnel, to the incredible impacts that one humble, pious American can have on the lives of so many by sacrificing his for them.”

About the Author

With all I have read and watched about Kapaun I find the first half of this volume implausible. The first nine chapters of this volume read like historical fiction, written to be a made for TV movie. It feels like an episode or episodes of Tour of Duty (1987-1990) but written about the beginning of the Korean War. The dialogue seems too shaped and no sources are listed. Some of the events in this first half are documented but the conversations, actions, speeches … what are the sources? The interlude is a brief bio of Kapaun. And then chapters 10-14 Are stories about the march, and time in the camps. Many key events that most biographers bring up are missing, and some others seem shifted. Front the interlude to the end I appreciated the volume more. 

Much of this volume feels like story and less like biography. As such I really struggled with a rating to give to it. I debated and ended up being generous and giving it 3/5 Stars, if there was a way to give half stars it would have been an easy 2.5. I have recommended all the books I have read about Kapaun and given them to my son to read, once I was done. I would only recommend this book if someone was already well-versed in the life of Chaplain Emil Kapaun.

I try and pray a Way of the Cross each Friday during the year, and also each day during Lent. I have now read and prayed enough different versions to use a different one each day during Lent. But I have a preference for eBooks because of dyslexia, and being able to always have them on me. And as Mike Aquilina states; 

“Now we can travel with more books stored in our telephones than the ancient Egyptians kept in their vast library at Alexandria.”

I have a few favourite editions of this devotion by the likes of Escriva, Liguori, Newman, Benedict XVI, and Sheen. This volume has joined that list of favourites and it is one I will return to often. 

The description of this volume states:

“These Stations of the Cross feature meditations on how Father Kapaun carried his cross in imitation of his Savior, as well as reflections from Kapaun's own mouth.

Quotations taken from the homilies and comments of Father Kapaun, archives of the Diocese of Wichita.”

Jesus Falls the First Time

Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
All: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

Meditation (Leader)
Beginning with a lengthy death march, captivity quickly proved a brutal taskmaster for the men Father Kapaun served. Many of the wounded stumbled and fell behind, in danger of being abandoned along the way. Yet their chaplain encouraged them to fight on, even placing the wounded sheep on his shoulders, carrying them in their time of distress.

Jesus, too, accepts the weaknesses and sufferings that belong to us due to sin and the hardships of life. As we walk the way of the cross with Him, we gain hope and strength from His falls.

Father Kapaun’s Words (All)
“That is the reason of the great joy which Holy Mother Church has today. She is still rejoicing, because Christ is still with her. He has never left her, and He will remain with her until the end of the world. On this earth, Holy Mother Church treads the way of the cross, but there is a goal to that way of the cross, and that is the way to heaven.”

Prayer (All)
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us, while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith.”  (Heb 12:1-2)”

I hope that sample station gives you a feel for this version of this devotion. This is an excellent Stations of the Cross. The reflections were masterfully selected and the meditations are excellent. For a few years now my son and I have been reading books about Military Chaplains. We have read a couple about Kapaun, and a couple of others that mention him. Having this devotion with his own words is very moving for both of us. This is an excellent Stations, one I can easily recommend for personal, family, or corporate use. An excellent for any Catholic.

This is one of the original 72 Vision Books for Young Readers. The originals were published between 1955 and 1969 by Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, Inc. Reprints of about half are available from Ignatius Press. This is not one of them. I wrote a piece about the series as a whole, Vision Books for Young Readers, after reading a few and wanting to know more about the series. This was one of the first that are out of print that I laid my hands on. It was an interesting read. I do not have a description of the book because the only copy I could tract down was missing the dust cover and could not find a description or dust jacket into online.

Acknowledgments 

The first chapter deals with what a chaplain is and does on a basic level. The remaining 10 chapters give specific examples, a few from the military, some from schools, serving a diplomatic core, serving migrant workers and more.  I highlighted a few passages while working through this volume. Some of them are:

“CATHOLIC CHAPLAINS ARE, first of all, priests. When most people hear the word "priest" they think of their pastors who celebrate Mass, hear confessions, give Holy Communion, anoint the dying, and serve the people of the parish in many ways. These are, indeed, most important activities carried on by every priest. Chaplains ordinarily do all of these things too.”

“Chaplains in the armed forces are probably the best known of all. There have been official chaplains in the United States Army since the year 177 5 when the Continental Congress first adopted a resolution to provide pay for them.”

“History has recorded the actions of many famous Catholic chaplains-Father William Corby, C.S.C., at Gettysburg, Father Francis P. Duffy of the "Fighting 69th" in World War I, and a host of others.”

“Father Clark's ''hoodlums" are men and women paroled from prisons who need encouragement, jobs, places to live, and sometimes money to live on. 

Many a prisoner, re1eased after serving a lengthy term, has said determinedly: “I’ve got to make good." Part of his reason was the fact that Fat her Clark was counting on him to do so. And the ex-convict was counting on Father Clark's friendship. Father Clark adopted his middle name, "Dismas," chosen in honor of the Good Thief, more than ten years ago. He laughingly calls it "my alias."”

“Actually, the life of every chaplain is full of surprises. In the eleven chapters which follow, you will read about some of them. Up and down the length and breadth of the land are hundreds more chaplains whose stories may well be as important and as heroic. Yet the eleven stories chosen seem to represent, in a way, the colorful, unique and exciting work being done by chaplains everywhere.”

“For Father Suver, as for many others, the siege of Iwo Jima then was history. Yet he could never forget what he had seen on the island-horror, courage, heroism, love of fellowmen. As long as he lived he ·would remember in prayer the friends he left behind to rest in graves of volcanic ash.”

And at the end of the volume we are informed that:

“The stories you have read in this book are true. The chaplains whose adventures you have shared are real men, most of them still living today. If you could talk to them, you would find that they would be the first to deny being heroes. Yet no one can read their stories without discovering that chaplains have a special kind of courage, the courage to forget themselves.

They dedicate each day to God and spend it helping those special groups of people with whom they work, always aware of those people's special needs. They concentrate on giving, not getting-a secret of happiness and peace which we all may share.”

This was fascinating read, the profiles of 12 priests who severed as chaplains and some who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is inspiring and challenging. Reading these stories has inspired me to pray even more for vocations. They were lives of service in a different time.

Reading this volume was interesting. All of the chaplains profiled in the volume are Catholic Priests. There have been a lot of changes over the last 60 years. May chaplains these days in some similar circumstances are religious sisters, deacons, and even lay people. I have a friend who is a permanent deacon who is during the school year a High School Chaplain, and in the summer Serves in the military with Cadets. I have known a few priests who were chaplains in schools, but most these days at least in Canada are not priests. So this book is more a history text than a look at things today. 

A great read if you can lay your hands on a copy. But one that will leave you disheartened by how much things have changed.

My introduction into the life of Father Emil Kapaun was the book A Shepherd in Combat Boots: Chaplain Emil Kapaun of the 1st Cavalry Division - William Maher. It has started a string of events. Since that time, I have read several of books about Father Kapaun, and other military Chaplains. I have watched a documentary about his life. And after watching that my son decided he wants to not only be a priest but be a military chaplain. When I saw this series on Formed I had to check it out. I had planned on working my way through it as a leisurely pace. But that was not to be. I have binged watched it twice now. And have plans to put together a group of men to work through the series.

 There are seven videos for this series, and introduction and then seven weeks. The videos are:

 There are 9 downloadable resources to go with the series. A Study guide for the whole series, or individual study guides for each module. As well as a leaders manual. Joe Farris is the facilitator on the video's giving an introduction and conclusion to each lesson. The life of Father Emil Kapaun is inspirational all by itself. When you weave that wound lives he touched personally or through people who have just been impacted by his story and you have a powerful combination.

 This series was incredible to work through by myself. I have started watching it again now with my son. And I plan on putting together a band of men to work through it. This series on Virtues was exactly what I needed this week. And I look forward to the other two series from Kapaun's Men! This is an excellent resource for individual, small group, or men's ministry. I highly recommend it.
