Top Ten Fiction Books 2025

It has been a good year for reading. I read 424 books this year, making it my third best since I started keeping track. There were many great reads, and a few new authors that I had not explored yet, with plans to read more from some of them. I have read just over a day, in comparison with the last 7 years:

The first half of this year was great. The second half was very busy at work and home, including moving house. Three teenagers have a lot of stuff and moving a family of 5 takes some serious effort and time; especially when we painted all the bedrooms, the den and did touch-ups in all the common areas. I can state again that looking back 2016 is a bit of an outlier as late that year I switched jobs and have since had much better work – life balance. In the spring of 2016, I worked through Brandon Vogt’s course Read More Books Now (now available on ClaitasU). The year before that I removed all games from my phone and tablet and my reading had doubled.

A few years I set the goal of reading all of Gordon Korman’s books, this year I read 62 of them. Of those 61 received 5/5 Stars. I did not want to make this list a lot of Korman, so anything by him could have ended up on this list. Check out this interview with Korman with Links to reviews of all of his books.

I also included some unpublished manuscripts that could easily have made this list. But I wanted the list to be titles you could lay your hands on and give a read.

As can be seen by the numbers, my reading has been up over the last few years, but last year there was a dip, but rebounded up over 400 again this year. This reading success I in part attribute to Brandon Vogt’s course Read More Books Now, removing all games but 1 brain game from my devices. And I was commuting to work on a bus and read on the bus every day. Working from home reading took a little more discipline, and we are now back to a hybrid model with 5 days a month in the office, so things have changed again.

Top Ten Fiction and Non-Fiction Books Fourth Quarter 2025

It has been a great year for reading, and fairly balanced across all four quarters. I averaged just over a book a day. It has been another great quarter with a large variety of genres and authors.

In April of 2023 I wrote a piece called How I Read So Much? Because I get asked the question so often, read the piece linked above if you are looking for some ideas on ways to read more. But a lot of it goes back to my dyslexia, and once I learned to read there were all these worlds and all this knowledge out there. I have been addicted since then. I wrote about that in 2006 Confessions of a Bibliophile #5 - How I Became a Bibliophile, From Dyslexic to Addict.

This quarter was very different. It was a little low, but both work and home life were very busy. Some huge projects going live at work, and we had to move and a family of 5 with 3 teenagers have a lot of stuff to move.. This quarter I read 72 books, my second best second quarter since I started tracking, the comparison with the last 8 years:

I have yet to read anything from the pen of Eric Sammons that was not very well done. From some of his excellent non-fiction works such as Holiness for Everyone and Be Watchful to his wonderful fictional short story, The Profession. Since he released that short story I have been awaiting another fiction offering from his pen. This is that volume. The description of this book states:

“In the early 22nd century, the world is recovering from the Chaos Wars—the bloody AI revolt that left more than a billion dead and the planet in disarray. From the ashes of this conflict emerges a revitalized Vatican, with war hero Pope Gregory XIX leading the way.

Now Vatican scientists have detected a mysterious signal from deep space which does not appear to be natural. To investigate, the pope commissions the Stella Maris, the first ship capable of traveling faster than light and going beyond our solar system. Captained by Chaos Wars veteran Dominic Rourke, the crew of the Stella Maris will face many trials and have their most fundamental beliefs challenged in order to solve the mystery of the Signal.”

This story is masterfully written; it really draws the reader in and keeps their attention. The story is not written linearly. We have or main story of the mission that is going to take at least 16 years to investigate and return. But we also have flashbacks that give us insight into each of the characters, their motivations, their concerns, and even their hopes. It some ways this story is epic science fiction or space opera. It is speculative fiction at its best. A small crew, a mission they might not return from, a mission with the potential to change the future of humanity. And to be honest questions.

While reading this; I though often of the Catholic Truth Society volume; Artificial Intelligence by Father Andrew Pinsent and Sean Biggins and Robert Reed. And the story can be interpreted a few different ways. I would love to work through this with a group and compare the interpretations, especially after the epilogue.

This is a novel with a great plot, an excellent pace, the characters are complex and well written. Catholic Science Fiction is not something new, and some of the greats in the genre have been Catholic and woven their faith into their stories. Sammons has done that in this story. It is Science Fiction at its best! A story masterfully written that leaves you wanting more. When I read Eric’s story The Profession I wanted more stories in that work and have awaited them for a few years now. That feeling is even greater after reading this one.

Well done Eric! An excellent story I can easily recommend.

I have yet to read anything from the pen of Eric Sammons that was not very well done. From some of his excellent non fiction works such as Holiness for Everyone and Be Watchful to his wonderful fictional short story, The Profession. But as much as I love his other works, this is the most important work he has written to date. It is a book that should be in every Catholic home, School and church library. I would love to see a benefactor come forward and gift a copy to every bishop in North America. This is a book that has the power to shape, change and renew the church and through that the world.

This book is much needed in the church today. And I can only imagine would the would could be like in 5 or 10 years if this books is widely distributed, read, and applied. The chapters and sections in the volume are:

Once I got going this book was very hard to put down. But to be honest, I hesitated about picking it up. I was well aware that it would not be an easy read. The text is masterfully done, and it is very accessible, but the content is very convicting. In the forward Bishop Athanasius Schneider states:

“Indeed, in our day war is almost everywhere stirred up and fomented against the revealed truth of God and against the primary mission of the Church to proclaim it strenuously and unambiguously.”

And he concludes the introduction with:

“May this book have a wide and beneficial reach and with God’s grace enkindle in the minds and hearts of its readers an unshakable love for the truth and the Church, because in her as St. Augustine says, “instead of victory, is truth; instead of high rank, holiness; instead of peace, felicity; instead of life, eternity.” (Civ 15:1)”

The description of the book is:

“In captivating detail, Sammons explores why the New Evangelization was destined to fail and explains how the decision to de-emphasize the Church's exclusive role in the process of salvation inevitably led to mass abandonment of the sacraments. He identifies how certain teachings were ignored or toned down--leading to their sudden collapse--and how progressives elevated ecumenism over evangelization and supplanted proclamation of the Gospel with "dialogue."”

And that is what you will find. An honest critique of some of the ways the church has gone wrong, and clearly and statistically shows the consequences. He highlights very clearly what church teachings are ignored or barely touched upon. And he sheds light on progressive ideas that have been elevated and celebrated.

The book will receive mixed reviews. Some will hate it and decry it with a vengeance. Others will praise it with out question or critique. But most should approach it with an openness to the Holy Spirit’s leadings, and they will find much of worth and value in this book. It might not be a book we want, but it is definitely a book we need!

Another excellent volume from Sammons pen. And one that is much needed today.

This is really two books in one. For in introduction by Eric Sammons makes up 40% of the volume. And though it is not a large book it is well worth the time and effort to read. I have encountered this saint a few times lately in reading about this saint. Both in a fictional retelling of his life, and in a book on Martyrs of England and Wales. Eric at the beginning of the introduction states:

“The Passion of St. Edward, King and Martyr tells the story of a young king of England killed under scandalous circumstances in the 10th century. The protagonist, St. Edward the Martyr, is an obscure figure today, often confused with St. Edward the Confessor, a more well-known English King and Saint who lived and reigned a century later, or with St. Edmund the Martyr, a King of East Anglia who lived and reigned a century earlier and was England’s original patron saint. Yet in the years following his death, devotion to St. Edward the Martyr was widespread in England, and many miracles were attributed to his intercession.”

He also informs us that:

“Even before ascending to the throne, Edward was known as a pious young man and was popular among the people. Once he became king, he was generous to the poor, promoted the Christian Faith, and supported Dunstan’s monastic reforms.

Unfortunately, soon after Edward’s accession, hopes that he would have a peaceful reign like his father Edgar were quickly dashed. Many prominent men, led by the nobleman Elfhere, coveted the lands controlled by the monasteries and attacked these Christian centers in order to endow themselves with more land and resources. The “white clergy”—those married clergymen who had been expelled from the monasteries previously—conspired to return to their old dwellings. At the same time, England was struck by a famine.”

We are informed that Edward is often remembered for his tragic death and the miracles that came afterwards. What this volume reminds us of is his life prior to that event. And the extensive cult around him after his death. A cult that survive the extensive persecution of Catholic in England.

This volume is the first translation into English from the original Latin. Ryan Grant has done a masterful job. The story comes to life. Once you start reading it you will not want to put it down. Sammons introduction sets us up setting the stage of the history and life and times of this saint.

This is an excellent read and I highly recommend it. I have thoroughly enjoyed anything from Sammons I have read. And I know I will be tracking down other works translated by Grant. This is a volume I would recommend to any Catholic and believe they will be blessed by the reading of it.

This quarter I have read 96 books, which was one more than Q4 2019. It was a good start to the year. And may excellent reads. Seventy-Seven of those books were first time reads. And 66 received 5/5 stars. Only 15 were fiction and 51 were non-fiction. And 8 of those had been read before. I am reading at the pace of about a book a day.

My reading has been consistent at about a book a day over the last few years. I attribute part of it to Brandon Vogt’s course Read More Books Now, removing all games but 1 brain game from my devices. And I now commute to work on a bus and read on the bus every day. Though I am working from home now because of Covid-19 This quarter was 80% non-fiction. There are so many great series I am reading from the Catholic Truth Society, I have had to make an effort to actually fit in some fiction.
