Saint Michael the Archangel Through the Ages - Fr. Frederick Schmit O.Praem and Fr. Peregrine Fletcher O.Praem

This is a stunning new volume for young readers and the young at heart. I absolutely loved it in my mid-fifties, and my son who is 18 came in and loved the artwork and book as well. I already have plans to pick up a few copies as baptism and first communion gifts. This is an excellent volume. I have read a few volumes specific to Saint Michael over the years and have participated the last few years in Saint Michael’s Lent. I was very excited when I first heard about this volume and it far exceeded expectations.

The description of this volume states:

Overview
Saint Michael the Archangel Through the Ages is a beautifully illustrated and engagingly written guide that introduces children to the great defender of Heaven and protector of the Church. From his mighty battle against Satan to his role in the Second Coming, this book traces St. Michael’s God-given mission throughout salvation history.

Fathers Peregrine Fletcher and Frederick Schmit, O.Praem., weave together Scripture, tradition, and captivating storytelling to show how St. Michael has intervened in the lives of saints and holy men and women across the centuries. Young readers will encounter beloved figures such as St. Joan of Arc, St. Patrick, and Constantine, alongside lesser-known saints like St. Lorenzo of Siponto and Blessed Alcuin of York. Through twelve interwoven stories, children discover how St. Michael protects, guides, and even corrects those entrusted to his care.

Rich in history, devotion, and wonder, this book helps children understand that St. Michael is not only a heroic figure of the past but an active intercessor and friend today.

What Your Child Will Discover
     • St. Michael’s battle with Satan and his role in salvation history
     • His active presence in the Old Testament
     • The Prayer to St. Michael and its meaning
     • The celebration of Michaelmas and its traditions
     • Michael’s Sword and the seven special shrines dedicated to him
     • His role in the Second Coming”

About the authors we are informed:

we are also informed:

This was a wonderful book to read and work through. The illustrations are amazing. The representations of the days of creation and choirs of angels are masterfully done. I was familiar with a few of the Saints encountered but some were brand new to me, as were some of the Saint Michal connections or interactions. I have added a few of those encountered to Saints I want to research and do more reading on.

This volume would be an excellent addition to any home, school, or church library. The information is great and the illustrations are awesome. This is a volume I wish I had when my own children were younger or even when I was young myself. It is one of the best Catholic picture books I have encountered, as such I can easily recommend it.

In 2024 I picked up the above volume because Father Mike Schmitz posted a video on St Michael’s Lent. I tried searching up some information about it and this was the only volume in English I could find. I picked two Litanies to pray each day through the Saint Michael's Lent. This one I prayer in the evenings, and the other in the morning. For years this one, Prayer to Saint Michael, has been part of my daily prayers, often prayer throughout the day.

Saints Ancient & Modern - Barbara Calamari and Sandra DiPasqua

I stumbled upon another volume by this writing team and have since reading that first one tracked down all but 1 in digital format. Because of a dual form of dyslexia I greatly prefer eBooks. The first volume I read was all about Holy Cards, and it was a fascinating read. There are four editions of this work I can find released between 2007 and 2015by Avery, Studio and Viking Studio.

The description of this volume states:

“Journey through time as Saints reveals the wonder and power of God through full color illustrations, images and inspirational prayers.

For more than two thousand years, the Christian saints have had great influence worldwide. They lived full, passionate lives and remain compelling examples of God’s work here on Earth. Now, this new, inspiring collection of biographies reveals the legendary stories, little-known facts, and inspiring beliefs of some of the best-loved saints.

Saints explores a select group of these individuals whose influence can be felt profoundly in the modern day. Each profile includes a biography with patronage and feast dates throughout the world, along with prayers both to and about each saint. These saints inspired countless classic artworks and you’ll also learn the symbols used to identify each.

From the patience of Saint Joseph and independence of Saint Ursula, to the boldness of Saint Joan of Arc and the love of Saint Pio, God’s grace and power is made evident to us all. Despite the tumultuous times in which these saints lived, they remained uniquely themselves on the path to holiness, making this collection especially real and relevant today. Whether you aspire to follow in the footsteps of the saints, or just want to learn more about these men and women, you’ll find Saints a stimulating read and the perfect gift for others.”

The subtitle on one edition of the book states:

“reveals the legendary stories, little-known facts, and inspiring beliefs of some of the best loved saints, and prays.”

At the beginning of the book, before the title page we are informed:

“For more than two thousand years, the Christian saints have had great influence worldwide. Now, this new, inspiring collection of biographies reveals the legendary stories, little-known facts, and inspiring beliefs of some of the best loved saints. Full color throughout, each profile includes a biography with patronage and feast dates, along with prayers both to and about the saint.”

My first time through this volume I only highlighted one passage:

“Every town and country has saints that are familiar to the local residents and obscure to the rest of us. Since it is estimated that there are more than ten thousand formally recognized saints, it was possible to profile only a very few for this book. Instead of brief biographies and images of many significant saints, we opted to go into detail about a varied handful that have an ongoing influence in modern life. The saints we have chosen are in no way the most important or exalted; many are extremely popular, some less well known. They bring with them a mix of personalities and ethnic cultures that reflect the makeup of today’s diverse society.”

Each of the saints has three or four page double page spread. The first two page spread is the name of the saint, a full page picture or photo of classic artwork or of the saint. Then each has:

Feast Day:
Patron of:
Invoked for:
Symbols:

Then the information about this saint and it concludes with a prayer. A sample info section for Saint Michael is:

Feast Day: September 29
Patron of: Belgium, Brussels, England, Germany, Umbria, firemen, grocers, health, knights, mariners, policemen, soldiers
Invoked for: good health, a holy death, physical protection
Symbols: defeating the devil or a serpent, scales, sword

A sample prayer is:

Prayer for the Intercession of Saint Teresa Benedicta

Lord, God of our fathers, You brought Saint Teresa Benedicta to the fullness of the science of the cross at the hour of her martyrdom.

Fill us with the same knowledge, and, through her intercession, allow us always to seek after you, the supreme truth, and to remain faithful until death to the covenant of love ratified in the blood of your Son for the salvation of all men and women.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.”

A few of the chapters have extra photos or highlight specific quotes from the chapters.

This is an amazing little volume. I absolutely loved working through it and plan on rereading it again. The chapters are 6 to 8 pages. And does an amazing job conveying a great deal of information about the saint. It is an excellent book I can easily recommend for home, school, or church library!

St. Michael The Archangel History, Lent and Prayers - Maria Alinne Costa

I picked up this volume because Father Mike Schmitz posted a video on St Michael’s Lent. I tried searching up some information about it and this was the only volume in English I could find. Fortunately it is a concise book, and I was able to read it in 2 sittings and begin the devotion. It is a wonderful little volume. And It has instructions for doing the devotion at various points in the year.

The description of this volume is:

“Devotion to Archangel Saint Michael represents, within the heart of the Holy Church, a guarantee of victory over the forces of evil. Many know him only by name, unaware of his history and the significance of his mission in defending the Faith and the Catholic Church, protecting God's people, and guarding the souls destined for Heaven. This booklet was written with the purpose of presenting Archangel Michael in the light of Sacred Scriptures and the Church's Tradition, recounting his deeds, highlighting his decisive role in the fight against malevolent powers, and, above all, emphasizing his immense faithfulness to God, which we are also invited to emulate. In a simple and straightforward way, this publication provides an itinerary for cultivating with fearless a true and sublime devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel who, together with the other Angels of the Heavenly Court, intercedes for each of us in front of the Throne of Grace.”

About the author we are informed:

“Maria Alinne Costa is a writer and master in Philosophy. She loves researching, meditating and writing on topics related to Theology, Philosophy, Catholic Spirituality and Simplicity. She believes that each human being carries within them a unique message to be shared with the world, and decided to spread hers through writing.”

The chapters and sections in this volume are:

Foreword
Who is Saint Michael The Archangel?
Origin of Lent of Saint Michael Archangel
The Power of Devotion to Saint Michael Archangel
Instructions for Well Praying Lent
Prayers for Every Day of Lent
     Invocation of the Holy Trinity
Opening Prayer - Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
     Litany to Saint Michael
     Then pray (Instructions)
     Antiphon
     Prayer
Act of Consecration to St Michael the Archangel
     Our Lady, Queen of Angels
     Final Prayer
     The Angelic Crown or Chaplet
Saint Michael the Archangel Novena

I only highlighted a couple of passages while reading this little volume. They are:

“Saint Francis often prayed this prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory, deliver the souls of all the departed from the pains of hell and the deep abyss, free them from the jaws of the lion, so that they may not be prey of tartarus and may not fall into darkness; but let Saint Michael the standard-bearer lead them to the holy light that you promised to Abraham and his descendants.””

“By inaugurating the time of devotion and grace that is the Lent dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, Saint Francis teaches us to pray incessantly and to seek in the Prince of the Celestial Militia the necessary strength to win the good fight with an unshakeable faith in the power of God and His unparalleled love, revealed through the sacrifice of His Son, Our Lord Jesus.”

This was a fascinating little read. The material was presented in a clear and concise manner. It was easy to understand. And To be honest anyone from about grad 7 or 8 up could read this and benefit from it. My son (16) and I are doing St Michael’s Lent together and this has proved an great resource.

I loved this little volume, and plan on picking up the only other volume from Costa that is available in English. And hope that the other three that are available in Portuguese are eventually released in English! I great booklet I can easily recommend!

Prayer of the Day Prayer to Saint Michael

Prayer to the Saint Michael
Prayer of the Day

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defence against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly hosts,
by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

I do not recall where I got this prayer from. I have been praying it for a long time. The stained glass is from St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church Waterloo. Click here for a photo essay of the church from a number years ago.

Nine Days with Saint Michael - Andrew Offer, O.P. and Jonah Teller O.P.

Nine Days with Saint Michael
Andrew Offer, O.P.
Jonah Teller O.P.
Sebastian White O.P. (Editor)
eISBN 9781949239935
ASIN B09F8DK9P2

I picked this up to read, after reading and reviewing Nine Days with Saint Joseph, by the same authors. I really enjoy the format and style of both books, and wish there were more available. The description of this book is:

“Saint Michael defends the Church against the wickedness and the snares of the Devil.

Over nine days, get to know this great warrior better through prayer, hymns, Scripture, meditations, and art.

Each day focuses on one of Saint Michael's outstanding qualities and includes:

- A hymn set to a well-known tune
- A Scripture passage
- A meditation from a saint or well-known spiritual writer
- A variety of prayers, including intercessions for you to personalize
- Beautiful artwork

Let him protect you and your family!”

It is available in print, though currently awaiting a reprint, and as an eBook on several platforms, also in bulk from the publisher. It would be excellent to work through with a group or even as a parish. Working through it as a group you could do one day a week for 9 weeks. The sections in this volume are:

Introduction
Day One: Who Is Like God?
Day Two: Archangel
Day Three: Great Prince
Day Four: “May The Lord Rebuke You!”
Day Five: “I Will Serve!”
Day Six: At The Altar Of Incense
Day Seven: Battling The Dragon
Day Eight: The Scales Of Judgment
Day Nine: Everlasting Praise
Appendix
     Litany of Saint Michael
     The Chaplet of Saint Michael

This book, like the other volume, is very accessible. It is an excellent little read. It was hard to put down and spread the reading over the nine days. At the end of most days I wanted to push on and keep reading. We are informed that:

“Each day follows the same structure: a hymn, a reading from Scripture, and a meditation, followed by a set of intercessions. We encourage you to entrust to Saint Michael some special intention during these days of prayer. Then we pray the Lord’s Prayer. After invoking the intercession of Mary, Queen of Angels, we have a closing prayer. Finally, each day concludes with the traditional prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel.”

Two of the passages I highlighted while reading this volume are:

“This fight against the devil, which distinguishes the figure of the Archangel Michael, is still relevant today, because the devil is still alive and operating in the world.”

“Let there be no mistake: a spiritual war is being waged in the world. Saint Michael and his angels fight against the dragon and his angels. We cannot be neutral in this battle. We call upon Saint Michael’s leadership to fight against our ancient foe today.”

This volume can be read and worked through at any time of the year. I read it so that I would finish on the Feast of the Archangels. I encourage you to pick it up and read it. It is an excellent novena to Saint Michael. I strongly encourage you to give this book a read. I am certain it will benefit your spiritual life. A great little read. And I hope Magnificat will release more novena books in this format and style.
