Exodus 90 Take 2 - Prayer, Asceticism, and Brotherhood

Exodus 90

A 90 Day program for Christian men with a focus on Prayer, Asceticism, and Brotherhood. From Those Catholic Men.

This is a time to refocus, a time to make gains in the spiritual disciplines and the physical disciplines. For me that means 90 days of:

No television.
No sugar and sweets.
No alcohol.
No meat on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Daily Rosary.
Daily exercise.

From the Exodus 90 website:

"Exodus 90: The Purpose

The goal of Exodus is to achieve the freedom necessary to fully engage the love of God and the love of neighbor. Exodus is based on a challenging 90-day period of purification, a dying to self, which is supported by a fraternity of like-minded men for greater interior freedom and, eventually, a more purified and selfless love.

Most importantly Exodus is for men who have difficulty finding God and desire to radically unite himself to his Heavenly Father. Exodus is not a program of penance and self-abasement. It is a program for men who seek, together, to strive for more-perfect FREEDOM. This is the cornerstone of the exercise and much will be lost if that is forgotten."

When you register for the Exodus 90 program you get a 30-page manual and 90 days of emails direct to your inbox. Each email has a scripture passage, a meditation, an action list and links to supporting articles.

An special thanks to Dr. Taylor Marshall and Jared Zimmerer who mentioned this program on The Maccabee Society Podcast a number of months back, and who made it through their 90 day journey.

This is my commitment for the next 90 days, discipline and working out for the body, the mind and the spirit!

This is also my second attempt at the Exodus 90 Program. One of the goals of the program is to start together and finish together. Each time a member of the fraternity falls, the whole group restarts at Day 1. The first time I tried to do this by the 6th time we had to restart in under 6 weeks everyone had quite. So I am starting again on Ash Wednesday with a new crew! The 4 of us have each others backs and will see this through to the end.

Moses the Black: Thief, Murderer, Monk , Saint - Jared Zimmerer

Moses the Black Thief, Murderer, Monk , Saint
Moses the Black #1
Jared Zimmerer
Zimmerer Books
ISBN 9781539481973
ASIN B01MZZ5LCK

This novella is the first instalment in a 10 part series. Picking a lesser known Saint to be the focus of his first foray into the field of fiction was a bold move for Jared Zimmerer. But as they say 'either go big or go home', and Zimmerer pulls it off. This book delivers on its commitment to present saints in all their grittiness, rawness and without a rose filter. Saint Moses the Black is to have lived from 330-405AD. He is also known as Moses the Robber, the Abyssinian or the Ethiopian.

But our introduction to this man is at a time when he is no saint. In fact he is a slave, accused of murdering another slave. And though he is big and strong and worth a lot as a slave and worker his owner decides to condemn him to death. On the morning of his execution he escapes, and flees into the dessert in order to try and save his life. Meeting an old man in the desert who provides water and a meal, he is saved for the moment but must continue on. Finally reaching Lucrim, Moses and there he joins a band of ruffians, but one that has found a way to buy his freedom.

Who is this strange patron that wanted Moses in his band? They have been promised riches, robbery and an exciting life, but at what cost?

This book was a great read. Part history, part mysticism, part speculation but it delivers a thrilling story and leaves you desperate for volume 2. This story will be told over 10 short volumes. In some ways reviving the old serial novelization format, The advantage of this serial release is that we should get new instalments fairly regularly, thus not having to wait long periods for new novels. And as this book is part of a series about lesser known saints once can only speculate on other saints Zimmerer will present in this format. The drawback is that if the others are like this as soon as you finish a volume you will want the next.

An awesome novella that will hook you and you will be addicted waiting for more in the series. Well done Jared well done!

30 Days of Optimal Living - Jared Zimmerer

30 Days of Optimal Living
Achieving Greatness in Mind, Body, And Soul
Bohemond Press
ISBN 9780692611241

Jared Zimmerer is a man of many hats, he works full time in ministry, he is an author, podcaster, father husband and friend. And in all of that he is exemplary of striving to find balance between mind, body and spirit. This is the third book of his that I have read, and it did not disappoint. Both of his other books I have read in eBook format (which is my preferred format) I waited a number of months after this book came out in order to pick it up when I was breaking down and buying a few physical books. It was my loss that I did not give it a go earlier.

The purpose of this book is really to help you grow, but to grow in all areas of your life. It is intended to challenge the reader in all three areas of their life. It is also written to encourage us, and it was written to be a guide and help us develop skills for continuing our growth after the 30 days. At the beginning of the book is a list of Requirements of Optimal Living:
  • Desires results over comfort
  • Desires a strong body, a strong mind and a strong spirit
  • Desires integrity, courage and honesty
  • Desires work ethic and drive to succeed
  • Desires knowledge of humanity on many planes
  • Desires awareness of the unseen
  • Desires to shape one's environment rather than be shaped by it
That is a pretty serious list of requirements, but if you are willing to man up and give it a go this book can help build mental, spiritual and physical muscle for you and give you tools to continue on. After that challenging list we are provided with a limited list of approved foods; proteins, carbs, fats, veggies. The goal is also to eliminate fruits and alcohol for the 30 days. These 30 days are designed to help is establish discipline and focus so buckle down and give it a try.

After a brief word or caveat on each of the three target areas we are presented with three pages for each day of this journey. Each day is broken down into three focuses, and you guessed it, body, mind and spirit. The physical component is some quick body weight exercises at 5am, a main workout and a target for total carbs for the day. Next is the mental component, a reading for reflection. Some of these meditations are from philosophers, Yeats, Bruce Lee, C.S. Lewis and many more. And yes some of them are hard, but read them and if needed reread them. And finally for the spiritual there is a section for meditation, we are instructed to find a quiet place, then quiet ourselves, and finally reflect and journal on 3 questions each day.

The book is intended to be a guide; a guide to help you to establishing habits for physical, mental and spiritual growth. It will show you that you can do it. It will help you to establish new or greater discipline in your life, and how to continue that growth on after reading the book. And if you are still struggling start over and do another 30 days.

Is the book perfect, no it is not. If you do not have access to a full gym with cables and such you will need to come up with your own modifications for some exercises. It would be great if there was a substitution chart if you have only dumbbells or dumbbells and barbells. But overall it is a very very good tool to help you grow. C.S. Lewis stated "Mere change is not growth. Growth is the synthesis of change and continuity, and where there is no continuity there is no growth." This book will help you grow and what more could we ask for!

The Epistle to the Hebrews - Shane Kapler - and the Seven Core Beliefs of Catholics

The Epistle to the Hebrews:
and the Seven Core Beliefs of Catholics
Shane Kapler
Kenneth J Howell (Foreword)
Jared Zimmerer (Preface)
Angelico Press
ISBN 9781621381662

With averaging over 100 books a year I read a few amazing books, a few great books, a lot of good book and many that I give up on and never finish. Both this book and its companion volume The Porch and the Cross: Ancient Stoic Wisdom for Modern Christian Living by Dr. Kevin Vost are in the amazing category. Until now I have only read a book that Shane co-authored, Tending the Temple, some of his books have been on my to be read pile for a while and after reading this one they really jumped up that ever growing list. I literally read this through in two 3 sessions and know that I will reread it again soon.

Shane takes the book of Hebrews and breaks it down into sections teaching on core Catholic truths. The chapters in this book are:

1. The Trinity (Hebrews 1-3)
2. The Incarnation (Hebrews 2-5)
3. The Word of God (Hebrews 4-6)
4. Christ's Priesthood, Our Salvation (Hebrews 7-11)
5. The Communion of the Saints (Hebrews 11-12)
6. The Eucharist (Hebrews 13)
7. The Authority of the Church's Leaders (Hebrews 13)

Each chapter is broken down into a number of sections or teaching points, with between 3 and 8 sections per chapter. As someone who spent 20 years as an undergrad, I greatly appreciate the scholarship in this book but also its brevity. Shane writes in a succinct manner with a tight economy of words. I wish had had encountered more books like Shane's during my religious studies degree. Not only was it intellectually stimulating but was engaging and addictive to read. As a seasoned Catholic I greatly enjoyed the book, especially the chapter on the Communion of the Saints.

I have always had a great appreciation for the Eucharist, and it was pivotal in drawing me back to the Catholic Church. Shane's chapter puts into words some of what I could only feel in my heart and spirit and not adequately describe. And why it is so pivotal to what it means to be Catholic.

Before I had even finished this book I recommended it to a few friends who have also in reading it got as much out of it as I have. It is an excellent read and I can think of a single reason not to commend it to you.

This book was an amazing read and to be honest as soon as I finished it I put it back on my 'to be read list' to read through it again. There is also a companion volume by Kevin Vost The Porch and the Cross: Ancient Stoic Wisdom for Modern Christian Living. Separately they are each a great read but together they are awesome. And they really should be read together for the magnifying effect the teachings of each has upon the other. So give this book a chance it will have a direct impact upon your faith and practice.

The Porch and the Cross - Kevin Vost - Ancient Stoic Wisdom for Modern Christian Living

The Porch and the Cross:
Ancient Stoic Wisdom for Modern Christian Living
Kevin Vost
Kenneth J Howell (Foreword)
Jared Zimmerer (Preface)
Angelico Press
ISBN 9781621381709

I have been a fan of Kevin Vost's writings since I first encountered them. And even though I seldom read physical books any more I made an exception for this book as the eBook is not yet release. For as much as I have truly loved all of Vost's book I have read to date this book has had a massive and immediate impact on my life. For in this volume Dr. Vost takes us on a whirlwind tour of stoic philosophy, specifically 4 Philosophers and how as Christians we can leverage their wisdom and help take our practice of the faith to a new level.

The stoic scholars that we encounter are:  Gaius Musonius Rufus, Epictetus, Lucius Annaeus Seneca or Senica the Younger and Marcus Aurelius. No to be honest I had encountered three of our four teachers, and have read Aurelius's Meditations numerous times over the years. Vost approaches these four in a unique way, first he provides a brief biography, then he draws extensively from their own work some with more commentary than others and the a final chapter on each how in applying it we can become better at being. Then as a finale Vost ties it all together in a conclusion that unites what is good from stoic wisdom with true Christian love and how they combined can have an immense impact on our world.

While reading this book one of the biggest things that impacted me was the concept of how our reaction to an event or circumstance that drives our response. If we can learn to step back and look at the event, as just an event then often our reaction and out interpretations of those events will be radically different. From my first encounter of this though in the book I have been applying it there has been drastic change in my home life, my professional life and my social influence. By learning to look at events from the perspective of what is under my control and what is not and always moving forward towards what is best my life has already been changed. Matthew Kelly often states that God's plan for our life is "to become the best version of our self", Kevin through these four philosophers gives us numerous tools and techniques to work and strive for that one goal.

I must however give you a few warnings about this book. First if you are not open to change, to striving to be better do not bother picking up this book. Second if you do not have a true hunger and thirst for righteousness; "Blessed is he who does hunger and thirst for righteousness for he shall be filled" Matthew 5:6 leave this book on the shelf, it will challenge your beliefs about who you are, your role in the world and your calling as a Christian. And third if you simply want to read a short 200 page book, and then by all means leave in the store, for once you read you will likely reread it, or go off and read more from our 4 teachers from the porch. It will likely kick off a long reading list as you endeavor to go deeper into these lessons and work to achieve true wisdom. But if you are willing to take those risks, then this book is tremendous and can have a wonderful impact upon you; then because of the changes in you, on your family, your workplace your community. In my opinion the reward far outweighs the risk!

Kevin in quoting Mark Forstater about Marcus Aurelius  quotes: "It's in the nature of books about the spirit that they can be visited again and again. How often we return to books after a gap of some years and find that, with broader experience, we are able to read them in a deeper way, to see new facets that we had previously missed. Marcus Aurelius's book is one of these - it can't be outgrown; it does not date. It reads in a different way to someone who is twenty than to someone who is sixty yet still has something profound to tell them both about living the real good life." I belive the same could be said about Kevin's books in fact reading this one has inspired me to pick up and reread some of his other books.

This book was an amazing read and to be honest as soon as I finished it I put it back on my 'to be read list' to read through it again. There is also a companion volume by Shane Kapler - The Epistle to the Hebrews: and the Seven Core Beliefs of Catholics. Separately they are both great reads but together they pack an amazing 1, 2 punch. And should be read together for the magnifying effect the teachings of each has upon the other.

Building A Classic Physique - Jared Zimmerer

Building A Classic Physique
Jared Zimmerer
Published by Jared Zimmerer

This book is currently being offered for free on Jared's site. It is a great little read. Considering it comes in at under 50 pages it has some awesome advice. It has advice for finding balance, advice for growth and advice for not just achieving in the gym but in life. I shared this with a few guys who work out hard core and they loved it. The balance of faith and fitness is great. The contents are:

Contents:
About Building a Classic Physique
What is a Classic Physique?
Resistance Training
Full Body Routine
Supersets to Glory
Prepping for a Show
Cardiovascular Training
Diet and Nutrition
Supplements
Rest
Avoiding Traps
The Mindset of the Classic Physique Builder
Resources
Contact

The book begins with: "The 'classic physique' is less about the attainment of massive amounts of muscle and more building the musculature to a person's specific body type in order to create a balanced, well-rounded, beautiful body in the sense of the ancient Greek and Roman artists as well as the sense of many artists of the middle ages. The classic physique is one that portrays the beauty and strength of the human form without the necessity of going beyond." p.8 And from these goes on to give guidance on how to live to attain those traits.

Jared States: "A characteristic of the true classic physique builder is a mind for higher things. This is a major help when it comes time to denying ourselves the usual treats of life. There is a mentality that must become part of who you are if you want to be successful in your fitness and health endeavors. This attitude must be more than just a resolve to better ourselves, while this still has its own place, of course. Rather, what must be remembered in our constant day in and day out lifestyle is that we are aiming to reach our own individual, optimal physique." p.37 Jared gives sample routines, meal plans and good solid advice. This book is small but packs a big punch. It made my top ten non-fiction books of 2014 and I highly recommend it. Also you cannot beat the price.

The Ten Commandments Of Lifting Weights - Jared Zimmerer

The Ten Commandments Of Lifting Weights
Recommendations to the Devout Body Builder
Jared Zimmerer
Bezalel Books
ISBN 9780984486496

This book was an incredible read. The combination of faith and fitness was excellent. We are seeing a whole new movement towards a more holistic approach to life across the Christian denominations and this one specifically speaks to Roman Catholics. Though to be honest, any Christian could glean much to be applied to their spiritual and physical disciplines. This short volume has much it can teach us and I highly recommend it.

Sections in the book:
How to Use This Book
Note from Kevin Vost, Psy. D
Chapter I Thou shalt not forget Who gives thee strength
Chapter II Thou shalt always give the glory of muscularity to God
Chapter III Thou shalt use this time for self-realization and mortification
Chapter IV Thou shalt use this time to train to be a warrior for The Queen Mother, Mary, Warrior of all warriors
Chapter V shalt use this time to appreciate what masculinity is - truly a gift from The Almighty
Chapter VI Thou shalt never use this time for Self-glorification - vanity is deadly
Chapter VII Thou shalt pray before, during, and after one lifts
Chapter VIII Thou shalt pray that one's strength is useful in the will of God
Chapter IX Thou shalt listen for the Whispers of God in this Time of Reflection
Chapter X Thou shalt rack the weights when finished - the one true God is a God of order
Example Workout Routines
Book Recommendations

I think the only thing I would have liked to see is a few 'Thou Shalt Nots' in the list but overall it was an excellent read. I know I will reread it and have already had a few friends read it who loved it. The book concludes with this prayer:

Ode of a Catholic Bodybuilder
My body is a temple, Ready for war,
I train to stay healthy,
To better serve the Lord.
My King desires perfection,
In mind, body and soul,
Through blood, sweat and tears
My body will pay the toll.
Strength and Honor,
Discipline and Prayer,
Unworthy of heaven,
But my King wishes me there.
I will prepare my body,
Educate my mind,
Through my loving Queen,
My soul will thrive.
My power will increase,
My muscles will grow,
Years of enemy temptation,
But I will serve
God alone.

So read the book to develop your mind, and use the information to strengthen both your physical and spiritual muscles. You will not be disappointed.
