This is the second book by Gutman that I have read this year, and the ninth book by Dan Gutman that I have read a few years ago I read several with or to my son. And then they sort of got lost in my ‘to be read pile’. I picked up the eBook of this a half dozen years ago, the same time I picked up The Christmas Genie, and never got around to reading them. I have enjoyed all the books I have read by Gutman. And find them very entertaining. This and a couple of others have been on my device a while and remained unread. That is being remedied. I have moved away from Middle Grade reads as my children have grown older. I however enjoy Gutman’s works well enough to go back and read them on my own, even if the kids are not interested at the moment. 

The description of this book is:

“When their town gets destroyed by a tornado, everyone is pretty depressed. So in order to cheer everyone up and raise some money, the community decides to put on a talent show. Unfortunately, no one in town is particularly talented. But that doesn’t stop everyone from giving it their all! Especially the one star in town. She just might have what it takes—if she can get to the show on time. When another tornado hits, the kids make every effort to put the show on, but there may be more surprises in store!

Dan Gutman delivers another hilarious tale about school adventures!”

This is another of Gutman’s stories to take me by surprise. It is an excellent read and has a wonderful lesson. Nearly everyone has a reason they could use winning the talent show. One wants to replace his father’s destroyed truck. Another wants to use it as a stepping stone to fame. One at lease does not want to win it at all. We are given a glimpse of the world through the eyes of these middle school children in the aftermath of a devastating event. We see some of the traditional school angst, cliques and conflict. But we also see the children rise to the occasion when things go sideways on the night of the show. She see a Hollywood and music star step up. And we find out that almost all of us have some form of talent. 

This book was an excellent read. And even though my son would find it an easy read I have suggested he give it a try. I loved this story and highly recommend it.

This is the eighth book by Dan Gutman that I have read a few years ago I read several with or to my son. And then they sort of got lost in my to be read pile. I picked up the eBook of this a half dozen years ago and never got around to reading it. I have enjoyed all the books I have read by Gutman. And find them very entertaining. This and a couple of others have been on my device a while and remained unread. That is being remedied. I have moved away from Middle Grade reads as my children have grown older. I however enjoy Gutman’s works well enough to go back and read them on my own, even if the kids are not interested at the moment. 

The description of this book is:

“It’s the last day of school before Christmas vacation and Alex, Chase, and the rest of Mrs. Walter’s fifth-grade class couldn’t wish more for the final bell to ring. But the day takes a crazy turn when a mysterious meteorite crashes through the classroom window—and a genie pops out! Bob, as he’s called, is willing to grant only one wish for the class to share, and if they can’t agree on something before the bell rings in an hour, they’ll get nothing at all. What follows is a debate that is at turns thought-provoking and hilarious—and at all times irresistible.”

I was always intrigued by the art work for this book, both version. And I will be honest the story took me by surprise. And the twist at the ending, wow! I really did not see that coming. Who would have thought that a meteorite containing a genie could stir up so much? The class gets one wish. Everyone writes their wish on a piece of paper and the teacher starts reading them out. Some are hilarious, some funny. The arguments for and against many of them are amusing. Some are deeply moving. And they make us think, they inspire us to consider the differences between wish, want, and needs. It is an entertaining read but also a book that really gets the reader thinking.

It is a wonderful little book and I am glad I read it. I am certain it will entertain middle grade readers. And even older folks who give it a go.

This is the seventh book by Dan Gutman that I have read, and the first I have read with my son. I love the quirky sense of humor that Dan exhibits in all of his books that I have read. What could go wrong when a group of youth form a club to get rich by the end of summer break? They for the GRQ - Get Rich Quick club. Soon they have everything a successful company needs, a list of officers, a motto and a mission statement of this ambitious group of friend is as follows:

"OUR MISSION STATEMENT 

We, the members of the Get Rich Quick Club, in order to form a more perfect summer, vow that we will figure out a way to make a 

$ MILLION DOLLARS $

by September. We agree that neither rain nor snow nor gloom of night will prevent us from achieving our stated goal, until death do us part. You tried the rest. Now try the best.

So one day sitting up in a tree they form a company, and work on a plan to get rich. But as we can almost all attest what seems like a good idea at the time in hindsight can be a terrible terrible idea. These friends come up with a plan to sell a photo of a UFO, unfortunately they do not have a photo of one but they devise a plan for how they can fake it. 

When their plans to sell it to an enquirer type magazine, The National Truth fall through they sell it to the local paper, the Farmington Journal. For far less than their hoped for million dollar payout. But the story gets picked up by the news feeds, who doesn't trust young kids to tell the truth and soon they are on tv, the covers of magazines and it looks like their payday might be bigger than ever expected. Until someone's conscience gets in the way.

There are some fun twists in the plot and an awesome surprise at the end. Overall a great fun read for young readers and those who read to or with them. Thanks Mr. Gutman for another great read.

Dan Gutman has written over 100 books, this was the sixth book by Dan that I have read and with each one I have a greater respect for his skill, talent and diversity as a writer. This was a great story that I could not put down. I read it in two sittings, and then went back and reread it because it was so fun. It's is a great story that children and some parents or older readers will really enjoy. I mean how awesome is a book that begins with jumping off the Empire State building. In some ways reading this is like reading  a back story to the Mission Impossible movies, but with a kid 13 year old kid as the action hero, and man does he love his action.

Johnny thyme aka Johnny Hangtime is a stunt man, or really a stunk kid. You won't see his name in the credits because he is sworn to secrecy about the stunts he does for the handsome and famous Ricky Corvette! His contract is so severe he can't go to gym class, school dances or anything that could prevent him from doing stunts or as they call it pulling a gag. But this latest film has a gag that just might be too much. Johnny's dad was one of the all-time best stuntmen, who perished trying to go over Niagara Falls. Now Johnny has been asked to do the same.

This story has a number of plot twists that took me by surprise. It was an incredibly enjoyable read. My highest rating for a book is my level of desire to share it with my kids. This I one I know they will love when they are older, and I will enjoy rereading with them!

I have read a number of different books by Dan Gutman over the last few years. And I must say this one is my new favorite. It was an awesome read across genres and the humor was incredible. In many ways it reads like a jaunt across literary genres much like Robert A. Heinlien's Job: A Comedy of Justice. I loved this book and have recommended it to a number of people who all enjoyed it also.

Trip Dinkleman hates to read. He really hates it. But he gets roped into helping set up for the book fair by Mrs. Pontoon. As he is shifting crates of books, one falls and soon he wakes up in a different world. Some characters look the same, some even have same names but something is very wrong and he keeps 'shifting' from episode to episode. He floats through the following Genres:

Sports
Adventure
Science Fiction
Humor
Mystery
Historical Fiction
Animal Fiction
Fantasy
Fiction for Girls

And along the way he has a couple of intermissions. Trip goes on a real trip and as he transitions from story to story he must figure something out in order to move on.

This story was wonderfully entertaining. It was an awesome read that I know I will go back and visit again. If you are looking for something new or different, give it a try; pick up this book and go for a wild ride.
