This is the sixth book by Jimmy Akin that I have read, and the second he published with the Catholic Truth Society. Over the last few years, I have read over 250 books and booklets from the Catholic Truth Society. I have also read other books on the church Fathers including some by Mike Aquilina and Pope Benedict XVI. So I approached this volume with great expectations.

The description of this volume is:

The end of the introduction to this volume states:

“Provision therefore needed to be made for the Christian faith to be passed on to future generations. This was accomplished partly through the writing of the New Testament, but it was also accomplished as the first generation of Church leaders passed from the scene and handed the torch of faith to another.

At the end of his life, the apostle Paul wrote to his young protégé, St Timothy, telling him: “Accept the strength, my dear son, that comes from the grace of Christ Jesus. You have heard everything that I teach in public; hand it on to reliable people so that they in turn will be able to teach others.” (2 Tm 2:1-2)

The age of the apostles thus gave way to the age of the Church Fathers, which is the hinge connecting the New Testament era to the rest of Christian history.”

The first chapter of this book, titled ‘The Fathers’, states that:

“The Church Fathers are vital witnesses to the Christian Faith. To qualify as a Father, an individual must meet four criteria: he must possess antiquity, orthodoxy, holiness, and the approval of the Church.”

It then goes on to define each of those four requirements. And ends with this statement:

“Canonisation implies that the Church approves both an individual’s holiness and orthodoxy, so for practical purposes, any sainted writer living in the age of the Fathers may be considered a Church Father.

The writings of these individuals are important, and they contain much practical wisdom for living the Christian life.”

Jimmy also informs us of some other valuable sources from this time period, and also some valuable books without solid attribution. And finally Jimmy states:

“In this booklet, we will examine what the writings of the New Testament, the Church Fathers, and other early Christian sources have to say on a variety of subjects.

We will see that the issues we face today have always been part of the Christian life, and that the writings of our Christian forebears have much wisdom from which we can learn.”

From there we are presented 25 topics. Jimmy’s research is impeccable. His writing is fluid and engaging. The book is accessible. It is a book that can be read from beginning to end, or jumping around the topics. It is also a book we could return to often as a refresher. When I was involved with Campus Ministries, specifically Campus Crusade for Christ, they have a series of ‘How To’ booklets, by your second or third year in the ministry you had them memorized and could use them in random evangelization. This book might not be memorized by many, but reading it a few times, or once a year for a few years will help set the teaching in our hearts and minds.

It is a wonderful little volume and I highly recommend it.

A few years ago, I have read 30 of the books in the 20 Answers Series from Catholic Answers. I started with the 20 Answers Challenge when there were just 20 books in the series. And I have benefit from each that I have read in the series. And each one has been education, informative and encouraged my faith. I have a Religious Studies Degree with a specialization in Roman Catholic Thought. I would have loved to have had these books as resources back then. They are great reads, and this is an excellent offering from the pen of Jimmy Akin. Part of the description of the volume is:

“Perhaps no single theological issue divides Catholics and Protestants, and along so many fine lines, as the question of salvation: namely, are we saved solely by profession of our faith in Jesus, or do our actions (and omissions) play a part? Is it enough to commit ourselves interiorly to Christ, or do we need things like sacraments, sacrifices, and acts of love, too? 20 Answers: Faith & Works gives a short and clearly readable explanation of the basic disagreements, provides a compelling case for the traditional Christian understanding that the Catholic Church professes even today, and holds out hope for increasing unity among all believers on this critical issue.”

This book came at a timely junction. We had friends who has watched American Gospel on Netflix, and they were concerned about offending us because the show did not portray Catholics in a good light. And it lead to a discussion on faith and justification ad works.

In these 20 questions you will delve deep into the history, church teachings and practical advice for those of us trying to live out our faith today. Some of the answers highlight the differences and some highlight many similarities. For me it was particularly chapters 14, 17, and 19 were impactful. And the final chapter on integrating faith and works into our lives.

Another excellent read in a great series.

This was the third book that I finished by Jimmy Akin this year, but it was the first I started late last year. This book is intended as a daily devotional. But to be honest I could not put it down and often read an extra day. From the introduction Jimmy has you hooked he states:

"The history of Christianity is one of debate. As the Gospels reveal, Jesus was challenged right from the start. Rival schools like the Pharisees and Sadducees posed pointed questions to him, trying to trap him in his words and even to get him in trouble with the authorities.
…
Our world is very different from the one in which Jesus lived. But the more things change, the more they stay the same. If people posed challenges to Jesus, they will do so to us as well."

This book has a devotion for each day of the year, and that extra one for leap years. As soon as I finished reading this the first time I started again, this time just doing the 1 reading a day. When buying physical devotions book, I usually flip to the day that would be my birthday if they are set out to follow the calendar and read that one first as a sample, there were so many incredible pieces in this book I figured I would share that one with you as a sample:

"DAY 24
The Moral Argument

CHALLENGE
"Why shouldn't I believe in scientific materialism-the view that only physical matter and energy exist and that science is the key to all knowledge?"

DEFENSE
Because morality points us beyond the purely material and beyond what science is capable of establishing.

Moral values are real. Some things are objectively right and some are objectively wrong. Showing compassion for the poor and the weak is good; torturing babies for fun is evil. Belief in moral values is a human universal that exists in all cultures. It is built into human nature, and it cannot be suppressed. Even those who profess philosophies denying moral realism cannot maintain the pretense. They invariably slip back into realist thinking and language, expressing either appreciation for acts they sense are good or outrage at acts they sense are evil.

But science is not capable of establishing moral values (one of several limitations it has; see Day 333). It may be capable of studying what people consider morally good and bad, but it is not capable of establishing what is morally good and bad.

This is known in philosophy as the "is-ought problem." Certain statements are descriptive, describing the way the world is. Others are prescriptive, describing the way the world ought to be. Science is capable of investigating the former, but it does not have the ability to investigate the latter. As philosophers have often put it, you cannot derive an ought-statement from an is-statement.

The reason is that science involves an empirical methodology-one based on things that can be detected and measured by the physical senses or by physical extensions of them (e.g., telescopes, microscopes, radio wave detectors). But moral good and evil cannot be detected and measured in this way. They are non-empirical qualities. You cannot detect moral goodness with a technical instrument or torture someone in a lab and use an evil-ometer to determine how bad the act is.

We thus have good reason, based on the universal human belief in moral realism, to hold that moral values are objectively real, but they transcend the empirical. This shows that there is a transcendental realm that goes beyond the purely material and the abilities of science.

To help skeptics see the point, you may wish to propose examples of concrete things they will regard as morally evil."

Now to be honest there were a number of readings that I went back and reread a few times. This book is not simple fluff - raw raw I am a Christian - stuff. It is the real meat and potatoes of the faith. I would be surprised if you could read this book and not be challenged on some point of theology. Unless you have had incredible formation in your spiritual life, this book will not only give you tools to defend the faith, it will also help you have a more solid spiritual footing in your own life.

This book could be read by anyone in high school through to well past retirement age, and they would benefit from its instruction. After You read this book some of the topics tackled might not be immediately applicable, but I am sure there are a few you will think 'I wish I could have used this when …' and that is what the book will do. In easily digestible pieces it gives you a lot of tools in your apologetics tool belt. Even for the more difficult topics Jimmy writes in a very engaging manner, and to be honest, many days you will finish the reading and want more. And Day 366 gives you a long list of books to use to go deeper.

A wonderful book that I highly recommend.

In the last few months I have finished three books by Jimmy Akin. Each has been a great read in its own way, but this particular book I loved. Having spent over 20 years in University as an undergrad, and 10 of that part time working on a religious Studies Degree, with a focus on Roman Catholic Thought, I have encountered the church fathers a number of times. I have read a few different collections of sayings of the church fathers and sections of a number of other books by and about the Desert Fathers and Mothers. I will state that this book is the best book I have read to date on this topic. This volume pulls it together differently than any other book I have encountered. In past readings of the desert fathers some sort strictly by author, some by topic and some in chronological order. What Jimmy does different is that he sorts by major topic, then sections within the topic and then in chronological order. Jimmy also ties the quotes from the desert fathers to church canons from Church Council’s.

Unlike many other books on the church Fathers Jimmy starts out with setting the ground work. He defines what he means by Church Father, as compared to ecclesial writers. He also sets the church fathers in their time. He has sections about the fathers, their world, And the regions that these writings draw from. In fact the Sections in this book are:

There is a lot to digest in this book and the way that Jimmy presents the material. In fact I often rip through books in a day or two, but took my time with this volume and spent over a week working my way through it. I have also already added it back into my to be read pile to revisit it again later this year or early next year. Some books you can read once and be done with them, others you come back to again and again, my feeling is this book by Jimmy Akin will be in that latter category for me, and likely for many other readers.

There are a few things that make this book excellent for personal study or for evangelization. First Jimmy predominantly draws upon publically available translations, that way you can go further in your readings with specific fathers or topics. Second he draws mainly from protestant commentaries, or translations of the quotes. For the most part the times he does not is when those sayings have been dropped from the protestant editions. And finally because of the format with an introduction, then the quotes, the material has been wrapped and packaged in a much easier way to digest. Some versions just have the quotes with no context, but Jimmy goes the distance to give us context and cohesion across the specific topics.

As I stated above of the numerous books with quotes about the desert fathers this is now my favorite. It will be the one I recommend to friends and family. It will be the one I encourage seekers to read when the topic is broached. And it is the one that I will reread again and again. An excellent resource for any serious Christian who cares about the early years and traditions of our faith!

Lent is now half over and I have read 7 of the 20 books in the 20 Answers series from Catholic Answers. And I realise I am setting myself up for a hard stretch towards the end. To date I have been avoiding all the ones that deal with other religions. I have no hesitation about reading them but am concerned about how to approach them for writing reviews. But I made the commitment to do the 20 Answers Challenge from Catholic Answers Series. During lent you can get all 20 books for 50% off, what an amazing deal! So I need to refocus my reading, and tackle some of those books I have not yet. I am part way through Jimmy Akin's A Daily Defense: Apologetics Lessons for Every Day, and love his writing style, so I was not surprised that I loved his volume on Salvation in this amazing series.

The twenty questions that Jimmy tackles regarding salvation are:

1. Why do I need to be saved?

6. How should we understand the key concepts connected with salvation?
7. How should we answer the question, "Have you been saved?"

14. Are we justified "by faith alone"?
15. What are "works of the law"?

From the introduction Jimmy is clear and concise in his teachings on Salvation, he states: "When Scripture says that God gave his only Son, it refers to Jesus Christ and the key events of his life-particularly his death on the cross. God didn't just give his Son to be born among men-he gave him to die on a cross for our salvation. That's how much God loves us!" This book is a synthesis of centuries of teaching about salvation, what it is, what it is not, how it is achieved are but a few of the lessons that will be learned in this book. Jimmy draws extensively from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and from Scriptures. There are a few other quotes from other church documents. But for the most part his arguments come from Scripture and the Catechism.

I particularly loved the chapter: 'If Jesus died for our sins, why should we do penance?' for it is excellent for sharing with fallen away Catholics, or protestants who question the 'whole penance' thing. This line here is pure gold "So even when we've become children of God and been forgiven, God still disciplines us. He allows us to experience some consequences for our sins so that we may grow in holiness." And when you combine it with what follows it in the text: "That's why we do penance. It's a way of embracing discipline, of learning to do it, to internalize it, and it builds strength and self-control for the future. If we learn how to say no to ourselves as part of penance, we'll be better able to say no to temptations in the future." You have a blueprint for spiritual growth into maturity. Or as Saint Paul wrote, in 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 "Brothers, I could not talk to you as spiritual people, but as fleshly people, as infants in Christ. I fed you milk, not solid food, because you were unable to take it. Indeed, you are still not able, even now, for you are still of the flesh. While there is jealousy and rivalry among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving in an ordinary human way?" Penance will help bring about maturity, and to be honest so will reading this book or the whole 20 Answers series.

This was another excellent read in the 20 Answers series and I highly recommend the book and the series.
