Novena & Consecration to Our Lady of Guadalupe: for Nine Days or Nine Months - Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke

I greatly enjoyed following the novena the year before this volume released and really looked forward to going deeper with a book during a second consecration. My only complaint is almost all of the material is that which was shared the first year via emails and videos from the shrine. I was really hoping to dig deeper and it was basically the same material in a different delivery method. DO not get me wrong it is great material. Jut was not what I was expecting or hoping for.

The description of this volume states:

Deepen Your Devotion with Cardinal Burke’s Powerful Guide to Spiritual Transformation

In a world often filled with darkness and confusion, Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke invites you to seek the maternal protection and powerful intercession of the Virgin Mother of God. Novena & Consecration to Our Lady of Guadalupe is more than a prayer book; it is a spiritual roadmap designed to foster faith, deepen your love for Christ, and help you live the truths of the Catholic faith in your daily life.

Why This Novena is Essential for Today
Just as Our Lady drew millions of souls into the Church in the 16th century, she continues to offer a grace of conversion and a transformation from the "culture of death" to a "culture of life and divine love". This book provides the tools to build a “sacred little house” for her in your heart, uniting your life more closely to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Inside This Book, You Will Find:
• Flexible Prayer Options: Detailed instructions on how to make the Novena and Consecration over nine days or nine months, making it accessible for any schedule.
• Authentic Catholic Teaching: Reflections from Cardinal Burke rooted in the mission of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
• Sacramental Encounter: Guidance on how devotion to Our Lady leads us to meet her Divine Son in the Sacraments of Penance and the Holy Eucharist.
• Daily Prayers: Includes the Novena Prayer and the Daily Prayer for those consecrated to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
• Inspiring History: Reflections on Saint Juan Diego’s relationship with the Mother of God and her enduring message of healing and hope.

This is followed by an excerpt from The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I highlighted a few passages while reading this volume they were:

“During that time, when Our Lady of Guadalupe first appeared to Saint Juan Diego, he had the profound sense that, in some way, Heaven had come to earth. Through his conversations with Our Lady and his obedience in carrying out her will, his life was changed forever. It was Our Lady, or, rather, the Child in her womb, who had transformed his ordinary world and made it extraordinary: God was present in his midst. In time, Our Lady claimed the New World for Christ, drawing over nine million new souls into the Church by the time of Saint Juan Diego’s death in 1548.”

“Today, we hope for that same grace of conversion from our sins. Today, we pray for the same transformation of a culture of death to a culture of life and divine love. Today, we seek Our Lady’s maternal love and protection, which she offers to anyone who seeks her Divine Son through her intercession.”

“With this book, you, too, can pray a Nine-Day or Nine-Month Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Inside this book are the Novena Prayer, the Novena Reflections, the Act of Consecration, and the Daily Consecration to Our Lady of Guadalupe.”

“In the battle for the truth, we must never give way to discouragement which is always the first temptation of the devil.”

“We, too, receive Our Lady’s assurance in those same encouraging words: What afflicts you is nothing; do not let it disturb you; do not fear; she is here; she is your mother; she protects you; she is the source of your joy; she is holding you in her arms.”

It was great working through this. I did the 9 days, and read ahead for the 9 months. There is a lot of great material in this volume. It is Well worth reading and praying through. I believe anyone who does so will be changed by the experience. I such I can easily recommend it.

A prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe

O Sacred Virgin of Guadalupe, show us that you are our Mother! Defend us in our temptations, console us in our griefs, and help us in all our needs! In danger, in sickness, in persecution, in bitterness, in abandonment, in the hour of our death, look upon us with compassionate eyes and never depart from us!

Amen.

Note: Every so often I post a prayer I use as part of my daily prayers. I have been praying this one for a few years I do not recall where I originally came across it.

A Prayer of the Day Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe

Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe
Prayer of the Day

A Prayer of the Day Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe

O Virgin Mother of God, we fly to your protection and beg your intercession against the darkness and sin which ever more envelope the world and menace the Church. Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, gave you to us as our mother as He died on the Cross for our salvation. So too, in 1531, when darkness and sin beset us, He sent you, as Our Lady of Guadalupe, on Tepayac to lead us to Him Who alone is our light and our salvation.

Through your apparitions on Tepayac and your abiding presence with us on the miraculous mantle of your messenger, Saint Juan Diego, millions of souls converted to faith in your Divine Son. Through this novena and our consecration to you, we humbly implore your intercession for our daily conversion of life to Him and the conversion of millions more who do not yet believe in Him. In our homes and in our nation, lead us to Him Who alone wins the victory over sin and darkness in us and in the world.

Unite our hearts to your Immaculate Heart so that they may find their true and lasting home in the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Ever guide us along the pilgrimage of life to our eternal home with Him. So may our hearts, one with yours, always trust in God's promise of salvation, in His never failing mercy toward all who turn to Him with a humble and contrite heart. Through this novena and our consecration to you, O Virgin of Guadalupe, lead all souls in America and throughout the world to your Divine Son in Whose name we pray.

Amen.

Note: Every so often I post a prayer I use as part of my daily prayers. I have been praying this one for almost 2 years now. It is one of the prayers I try and pray every day, it was composed by Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke. You can read bout this devotion and initiative at: https://novena.cardinalburke.com/. But living in Canada I swicth the last line to 'lead all souls in the Americas and throughout the world to your Divine Son in Whose name we pray'.

Our Lady of Guadalupe - Barbara Calamari and Sandra DiPasqua Cover Kit

I stumbled upon another volume by this writing team and have since reading that first one tracked down all but 1 in digital format. Because of a dual form of dyslexia I greatly prefer eBooks. The first volume I read was all about Holy Cards, and it was a fascinating read. There are three editions of this work I can find released between 2004 and 2015. The was a box set Prayer Kit, a hard cover edition of just the book and then the eBook edition I read.

The description of this volume states:

“She is exalted above angels. She is the Mother of All, offering her protection and comfort to all creation. This inspiring story of Our Lady of Guadalupe -- and Juan Diego's miraculous vision -- reveals a message of pure love and compassion.
Since the Virgin Mary's apparition on a Mexican hilltop in 1531, countless miracles have been attributed to her assistance. Unlike other visions of Mary throughout the world, the appearances of Our Lady are not shadowed in eerie mystery. She is very real, and the cloth impressed with her image has become the most popular shrine in the world, attracting up to 10 million pilgrims a year.

Beautifully illustrated in full color, this intriguing book includes nine novena prayers to bring the ritual of prayer and the legend of Our Lady of Guadalupe into your home.”

The chapters in this book are:

“Am I Not Your Mother?”
The Story Of The Apparition
Why Guadalupe?
The Two Religions
The Tilma And It’s Meaning
Guadalupe And The World
Novena Prayers
Bibliography and Credits

I have read about Guadalupe before but this volume brought it to life in a whole new way. I had never encountered the witness accounts prior to reading this volume, and the extensive use of the image in art, architecture and culture. I was also unaware of the ever growing worldwide devotion. And throughout the book are photos or the image of Guadalupe from a wide variety of usages. It was a great little read.

I will note the formatting on the eBook is not perfect. But the volume is so good I still gave it a solid 5/5 stars. This is an excellent little volume. I absolutely loved working through it and will likely read it again. It does a wonderful job of providing information about this apparition, its history, an English text of the witness and a collection of prayers. It is a great book I can easily recommend for home, school, or church library!

ISBN 9798988066712
ISBN 9781594174933

The Memorare Moment - Francis J. Hoffman aka Fr Rocky

TThis volume was originally published in 2012 by Relevant Radio, under the title For Immediate Assistance, Pray the Memorare it was reprinted by Scepter Publishers in 2022 under the current title. I received a copy to review many months ago, I took it on a short vacation to read and absolutely loved it. My only regret is that there is no eBook edition of this or Mary at the Crossroads of History, I have a dual form of dyslexia and prefer eBooks so I can change the font, and the colour of the font and the page, to make reading easier. But even with there being no eBook edition I consider this an excellent volume and one of the best books I have read this year. At the reading of this volume I have read 192 books in nearly the first half of this year. This is a volume I will be sharing with friends for a long time to come.

The description of the book states:

“You may be very familiar with the Memorare, a devotional prayer to Our Lady that asks for her intercession in times of need. Or maybe you’ve never even heard of the prayer but are interested in new ways to grow in devotion to Mary.

Whether you’re looking to learn more about the prayer that you grew up praying or are brand new to the Memorare, The Memorare Moment by Father Rocky has something to offer to people at every stage of their spiritual lives.

Encounter the profound and Christ-centered theology that underlines this quick, easy to memorize Marian devotion. Experience its impact through inspiring stories in history – and throughout Father Rocky’s life.

“The time has come for us to stand up and pray! Our friends, families, and world need to turn to this powerful prayer and our Blessed Mother’s guiding hand. This is the moment for Our Lady’s maternal intercession to bring about a change of hearts, a change of laws and a change of culture.” – Father Rocky.”

And about the author we are informed:

“Rev. Francis J. Hoffman, JCD (Fr. Rocky) is Executive Director of Relevant Radio.  Ordained as a priest for Opus Dei in 1992 by Blessed John Paul II, he holds a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, and a BA in History from Northwestern University.”

The chapters in this volume are:

Introduction: The Matter of a Moment
A Mother’s Prayer
Faith of a Father
The Mysteries of the Memorare
Behold Your Mother!
The Rock Prayer
Remember
O Most Gracious Virgin
Never Was It Known … Never Left Unsaid
Fled, Sought, Implored
In Your Mercy
Hear and Answer Me
Amen: The Marian Shape of History
The Memorare, Tomorrow and Forever
A Few Recommended Books

Father Rocky states in the introduction:

“In the first edition I made the historical and devotional case for this great Marian prayer. I drew from my own experience and from the lives of very recent sainst, and I begged readers to take that message and apply it specifically to a special intention: the eradication of legal abortion. I also asked them to log the number of their prayers on the ‘Memorare Meter’ created just for this purpose on the Relevant Radio website."

At the end of the introduction he states:

“Our task is enormous, and it will not be the work of a day, But it is the matter of a moment, and the moment, I believe, belongs to the Memorare. Please join me in this prayer without ceasing and discover, as I have that prayer is more powerful than politics.

We need to go now to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who intervenes decisively at the crossroads of history. She will lead us and teach us. She will pray with us and console us. She will offer her infallible intercession for us, and we will live to see the difference it makes.

Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve gone to her. Even if it’s been an hour, it’s been too long! So remind her of who you are and why you’re here: Remember …”

The prayer at the centre of this volume is:

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it
known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy
help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins,
my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and
sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my
petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

This story is part history of the Memorare and it’s uses down through history. It is also part biography of Father Rocky and his goring in faith his upbringing, discerning his vocation, and founding Relevant Radio, all while seeking the guidance and prayers of Mary.

It is a very easy volume to engage with. It is a book any high school student could easily read. It is an amazing little volume that any Catholic would benefit from reading. It will challenge, encourage and inspire readers of all ages. A great volume to add to any home, school, or church library! I can easily recommend this book.

The description of the book states:

“Mary at the Crossroads of History provides insight and justification into the special role our Blessed Mother plays in history. As Drew Mariani expressed: " This book will give you a deeper understanding of Our Lady's special role in human history and stir your heart with a greater love for her".”

The story of the Millennium Game and how it started the idea for this volume back on December 31st 1999 was fascinating, and from there Father Rocky goes back and forth through history of Mary’s interventions, messages, and the impact they have had on communities, society and the world. But that is wrapped in the idea that we are at another inflection point in history, and we can use these examples from the past to trust in Mary and her intercession.

His examples span history from Mary’s interactions with the disciples, to the battle at Lepanto, From Guadalupe to Fatima. He has a focus of a few stores about Our Lady of Good Help, and Adele Brise. His story are from epic battles in Christendom, Mary guiding a bullet, to personal stories of families he met on the Walk to Champion.

This is an amazing little volume that any Catholic would benefit from reading. It will challenge, encourage and inspire readers of all ages. I can easily recommend this book.

CTS Booklet D652

First I need to state that I love the books I have read in the CTS Christian Shrines Series, this is the third book in as many weeks in this series I have read, and each has been excellent. I have known about Guadalupe for many year, but it has only been in the last few years that I have read more specifically on this apparition, Juan Diego, and pilgrimage there. And this book is a great introduction. And it gives a great overview of the background, and the present practice. The sections in this volume are:

The Queen of Mexico
Aztecs and Conquistadors
Cortes in Mexico
Rebellion
Men of War and Men of God
Missionaries in Mexico
Our Lady and St Juan Diego
The Second Apparition
The Third Apparition
The Fourth Apparition
The Church is Built
The Immaculate Conception
Our Lady and the Mexican Identity
Church and State in New Spain
The Fight for Mexican Independence
The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Pope John Paul II in Mexico
Pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe
The Image on the Tilma
The Symbolism of the Image
The Message of Our Lady to Mexico and to the World
Life Force
Prayer of Pope John II

This book begins with these words:

“Mexico has more public holidays than any other country in the world, but with the possible exceptions of Christmas and Easter, none is celebrated with more fervour than the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

On 12th December each year, thousands of people gather in or in front of the beautiful basilica in a suburb of Mexico City which is dedicated to the patroness of Mexico. Masses are said, there are processions and displays, and rich and poor alike cross the vast concourse on their knees to seek the blessing of the Virgin.

On this day, all over Mexico, even in the smallest villages, Mexicans honour Our Lady of Guadalupe.”

This volume goes through the history prior to the appearance, and since. It gives a brief history of the original Church built in 1531, the first basilica in 1709, and the current basilica completed in 1976. Prior to reading this book, I was unaware that the shrine contains no other statues or images than the tilma of Juan Diego with the image of our lady upon it. From reading this book the site sounds amazing, with a mix of historical and modern building, the old repurposed. I can close my eyes and picture 20,000 people praying and attending a mass at this site.

This is another wonderful read in a great series. These little booklets inspire my faith and encourage me to pray more and in new ways. I may never visit this shrine, but it now holds a new place of importance in my heart. And as the most visited shrine in the Americas it is great to read this book just to grown in knowledge of faith, and the importance of this specific site both historically and still today.

My children and I loved this book and love this series! We have now read 28 books in the Encounter the Saints Series from Pauline Books and Media. I started by reading them myself, they were books I stumbled upon about saints I wanted to know more about. But soon started reading them to and with my children. Now, my children and I are working our way through the whole series. Of the 28 book I have read the majority have been reread with one of more of my children. My Oldest and I read these books together, alternating pages. And I read them with the youngest. The middle child and I will now often read alternating pages also. I read this book with my son, after he was given a small statue of Juan Diego that was shipped to us for his prayer corner in his room. We both really appreciated the book.

I was very familiar with the name Juan Diego, and of the tilma with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe prior to reading this book. I know a number of people with a deep devotion to this image of our Lady and have seen numerous prints, paintings and photos of this image over the years. But I was unaware of the incredible story behind it.

The chapters in this book are:
1. Back from the Dead
2. God's Great Plan
3. Serious Troubles
4. The Good News
5. Enter the Spaniards
6. A Prayer for Help
7. Aztec Life
8. The Emperor's Error
9. Tragedy!
10. The Miracle at Last
11. Mary's Second and Third Visits
12. The Sign
13. The Lady Gets Her Wish
14. Hidden Messages
15. Our Lady's Title
16. Science Proves the Miracle
Prayer
Glossary

The first part of this book is history, to set up the story. It gives a very clear and concise overview of the history of the Aztec people and the coming of Christianity to their lands. We are told:

"Many of the Aztecs' religious rituals resembled the sacraments of Catholicism. The Indians practiced a form of baptism, initiated (confirmed) young people, performed marriage ceremonies, and held death rites. Their very concept of offering sacrifices to their gods echoed the Eucharistic sacrifice, the Mass, in which Jesus offers himself to the Father on our behalf.

As much as the Indians' rituals made them open to learning about the sacraments, they were only shadows, signs of things to come. Once the Indians, like Juan Diego, had experienced the grace that the true sacraments bring, they were willing to suffer anything to receive this grace. Juan Diego had to walk for hours just to attend catechism classes. Many other Indians had to face the opposition of their friends and families when they converted to Christianity."

It is the tenth chapter of the book before we actually get to Juan Diego. The story is set of suffering and hardships but also of faith. It was on Saturday, December 9, 1531 that Juan first encountered out Lady. She appeared to him three times. And she asked for asked for a chapel to be built upon the hill she appeared on. And thus began the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe that has spread around the world.

This book follows the format of all the books in the series. There is the story, a prayer and a glossary. The prayer in this book is:

"Thank you, Mary, for having visited Mexico so many years ago. Because of that visit you are the Patroness of the Americas, and we give you the title Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I know that the messages you gave Saint Juan Diego are also for all of us, your children. Help me not to be sad or disturbed by anything. Help me not to be afraid, even when bad things happen. You have told us that you are our Mother. You have promised that you will protect us. I know that you always pray to God for us.

Saint Juan, I want to love Jesus and Mary as you did. Ask God to make my faith strong. Help me to imitate you. I want to be always ready to do what God wants. Pray for me, Saint Juan. Amen."

This is the only book to date in the series written by Josephine Nobisso. It is illustrated by Virginia Esquinaldo who illustrated three other volumes. There are 5 illustrations in the volume as is the standard for the series. The illustrations are pencil sketches. The final illustration is wonderful and I would love to be able to get a print of it for my son's prayer corner.

This book surprised both my son and I. The history was an important lesson. And the appearance of Mary to a simple farmer was heartening. We both loved this book and look forward to reading more in the series together.

A great book in an excellent series as a family we love them and recommend them to all who read to or with children.
