I have read the first seven novels and novellas in this series. As I await the release of the eight I am going back and reading the 4 short stories. Two are prequels and two falls between other works. This one falls between books 2 and 3. I first started this series because it was highly recommended from an author I love. I read this volume over a single day.
The earlier stories in this series were novellas then a full length novel and now back in the novel range for book 7. This one was published between books 7 and 8 but falls much earlier in the timeline. All of the stories in this series are excellent reads. And I was excited find out after reading this that an eighth volume has been announced for release early in 2026. Prior to reading that first book I had never heard of Martha Wells, but author Arthur Slade mentioned his on social media. And specifically, he mentioned that first book, which he had just finished. I have read a few books over the years that Art has plugged and have never been disappointed. And that was the case that time as well.
I bought and read the four shorter works in a short period. They gave me a little Murderbot boost. The description of this instalment is:
“Perihelion and its crew embark on a dangerous new mission at a corporate-controlled station in the throes of a hostile takeover...”
We do not actually encounter Murderbot directly in this story, but we see his influence and could maybe even go so far as friendship with a transport bot AI, Art and the Perihelion. It helps us understand future events better. Even if published later as a short vignette in the Murderbot universe.
Short fiction is a very different art form that writing novels, and very short fiction like this is also a different skill. Wells is a master of all three, and has all three in the Murderbot Universe.
This is a wonderful little story in this universe. It helps flesh out the relationship between Murderbot and ART, and also Art’s relationship with his crew, his people, and his university. It is a fun read. And to be honest leaves you wanting more. I can easily recommend this story, it is well worth the read.
