Healing After Betrayal - Sr. Kathryn J. Hermes FSP - Just A Minute Meditations

I have picked up all the volumes in this series. In part because they are great to work through, in part because I really enjoyed them, and in part because I am a completionist. I had picked up a few before I began reading them, but they kept getting lost in my ‘to be read’ list. As of the writing of this review there are 7 volumes in the series, 4 authors with Sister Kathryn having penned 4 of the volumes. And to date and 4 and penned by Kathryn J. Hermes, FSP. I have four of them on my Kindle purchased over the last two years. But while researching for this review I have found out, at least a few of the volumes are a rebranding of volumes published 8 years ago under the titles “Mediations for …”

The description of this edition states:

“Find refuge in God’s Word in the painful aftermath of a betrayal by someone you trusted. Let the gentle wisdom found in the pages of this pocket-sized collection of thirty Scripture passages, reflections, and prayers accompany you through the healing process and remind you of God’s steadfast love. Healing after Betrayal is part of the Just a Minute Meditations series from Pauline Books & Media, a collection of themed meditation booklets to help you pray through the challenges of life.”

Another current description is:

“"God's holy Word gives us a place to go when our soul needs to breathe and our heart needs to heal." --from the Introduction

The prayers in a section at the end of the book are:

Psalm 18
Enter My Life
A Prayer to Believe in Love
Heal Me, Lord
Sub Tuum Praesidium
Prayer for the Healing of Memories
Heart of Love

I highlighted a few passages while working through this volume, they are:

“Recall a time when you felt you could trust others without second guessing. A time before a loved one didn’t take responsibility for inexcusable behavior, or someone didn’t follow through on a promise, or a close relationship began to fray because of the other’s addictive behaviors or infidelity, or you were criticized in front of others, or a friend spoke harshly about you behind your back.”

“Whether the situation is serious or less so, betrayal hurts. Betrayal wounds. It is hard to recover from the cruel disappointment we feel when someone we love and trust turns out to be on a different page altogether. We question ourselves, or even kick ourselves for being so blind, so utterly trusting.”

“The good news is this: the Word of God points us toward realities that lie deeper than we can see with the naked eye. God’s holy Word gives us a place to go when our soul needs to breathe and our heart needs to heal.”

“View the meditations in this book as the whispers from a friend who understands the questions you are asking. These short reflections on God’s Word are like a hand reaching out to you from someone who knows that healing is not neat and tidy, that it’s a daily battle.”

“O God, I need your help, for I am alone and no one else knows what I am going through.”

“When you’ve been betrayed—deceived, tricked, double-crossed, stabbed in the back—anger, guilt, depression, anxiety, self-hatred, and a host of other issues can take over your life. Months and years may be stolen from you and your loved ones as you try to recover what you’ve lost: the time, the money, the relationship, the self-worth, the courage to get on with life.”

“At this moment, Jesus wants to draw near to you. Hear him addressing you by name and saying: I see the weight of the burden you’re carrying. I hear you crying out for relief. Come to me. I will support you as you reclaim your life.”

“Notice that when Jesus takes everything that you hand over to him, he holds it all gently. Take a deep breath. Rest at this point.”

“Dear Jesus, the wounds I have received have led me to isolate myself from others and even to hide from you. Today I choose to hand over all this to you.”

“The actions of someone who has hurt you do not define you. Nevertheless, betrayal in your life may be one of those “before and after” experiences.”

“The beauty of this promise is that it helps us reframe our perspective. It gives us some solid ground to stand on when our emotions and reactions are swirling within us, creating their own narrative. This promise tells us that God sees us. God hears us. And God is doing something about what we’re suffering.”

“At these times the scattered ruins of your world seem no more than a pile of discarded stones. You may fear that the shards of your experience will never fit together again.”

“When you dive below the raging feelings, that very hurt can lead to amazing discoveries about yourself and about God. Strength you never recognized can thrive in adversity. The very suffering has become an invitation to plunge into God’s grace.”

“As you find fresh hope, meaning, and purpose in your life, you will be surprised that your relationship with God will take on new colors, shapes, and textures.”

“Jesus is Redeemer, Savior, Shepherd, Healer. The Son of God took on our humanity, choosing to embrace our vulnerable, fragile, and often tenuous earthly existence as his own. He did not come with overpowering demands or force us to bend to his desires. He came as a baby, poor, one of us. He knows from the inside out how we are made, what we feel, how we suffer, and also what frees us, draws us, makes us feel safe and loved.”

“Jesus wants you to rest your head on his most Sacred Heart, ever pulsing with love. Why? Because he wants you to know the truth of his love for you and the precious value of your life.”

“Regardless of the way you were wounded, your spiritual life and your relationship with God have surely been deeply affected, for being able to believe in love is at the foundation of all spiritual growth. Ultimately, no words will convince you of God’s love—only the beating of Jesus’ most Sacred Heart.”

“Christ continues to be mysteriously but genuinely present and incarnate in the world through the Church.”

“The Lord has called you for a purpose. He has chosen you to become like Jesus, his Son. Since God is for you, you can trust that, in the waiting and the weeping, he is creating an outcome for you that comes only from his heart for you.”

“Heavenly Father, I trust you with all the outcomes I’m praying for. I know you have my good at heart.”

“In life and relationships, there are changes. People move on. People no longer want to share our vision. People don’t have the courage to endure hard things. People whom we trusted with our heart turn on us. The weight of life that saddles each person with unexpected responsibility feels like too much. The fabric of relationships is torn.”

“Even if every step forward has been followed by two steps back, you will never have reached a dead-end, but merely a turn in the road. Take a rest if you must, and then find new ways to engage life. Read. Reflect. Experience the world. Talk to others.”

“By letting grievances go, whenever and however you are able, you affirm that you are no longer held hostage by another. You affirm that the Lord himself is watching over you and revealing your way into the future.”

“Jesus, help me to relinquish what can’t be regained, to recover what can still bless my life, and to replace what has not been helpful with what is wholesome and true. Amen.”

“God’s love is an invitation to live no longer out of what “they did to me,” but out of what “God has done for me.” That still might be hard to hear. Your heart may still shout, “It’s not fair!” And it’s the truth: whatever happened to you wasn’t fair and should never have happened.”

“It is by God’s sheer grace that through Baptism each of us has been incorporated into Christ and made a child of God!”

“The Beatitudes tell us that, regardless of the circumstances, we can trust God to show his favor to us when we live their upside-down, counter-intuitive values. Like showing mercy. Like being pure in heart. Like being a peacemaker.”

“Perhaps as you began this journey, you felt deeply wounded from another’s betrayal. As you have prayed, it is God himself who has brought about something new within you. Now would be a good time to ask the Lord: What is it that you want me to know?”

“Ask Jesus for a core image of how he sees you when he looks at you now. You can do this every day because each morning is a new beginning and each evening witnesses the many subtle and not so subtle transformations that mark the beauty of a life that God is continuing to make new.”

A sample day is:

13 You Are the God Who Sees Me

The Lord’s angel found her by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the road to Shur, and he asked, “Hagar, maid of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She answered, “I am running away from my mistress, Sarai.” …

To the Lord who spoke to her she gave a name, saying, “You are God who sees me.”
Genesis 16:7–8, 13 NABRE

There are many beautiful names of God in Scripture. This is the name that Hagar gives to the Lord, who finds her when she is in distress: “You are God who sees me.” The God who sees us is the one who counts our every tear, who knows everything about us, who never closes his eyes or misses a detail of what is happening in our lives.

When you don’t feel God near, or if you think friendship with God is beyond your reach, ask yourself, “What really stands between me and knowing God’s strong love and enduring friendship?” In the passage above, notice it is the Lord who approaches Hagar first. She then tells him about her situation. She listens to his direction and then she addresses him by name.

The Lord is attending to you right now. He knows everything that is in your heart. Speak to him any way you know how. Then call God by this beautiful name: “You are God who sees me here and now.”

When I feel I am lost, O Lord, you see me. I am never alone.”

I hope those quotes and sample day give you a feel for this book, and I believe the series. I highlighted so much in this volume; I exceeded the maximum 10% the publisher allows you to export.  It is an easy volume to engage with, and you will benefit based on how much effort you put in. It would be a great book and series for teens, young adults and us older adults as well.

It is a great book and excellent series. I can easily recommend it.

I highlighted a few passages while working through this volume, they are:

“Gentle Jesus, these places in my life frighten me. I trust in you, my only hope.”

“When we ache for normalcy but find ourselves in the land of suffering where everything we knew and long for has been taken away, we may begin to appreciate the smallest things: sunrises, a pet, a cup of coffee, a few moments of quiet prayer.”

“With time we discover how resilient we have become and how amazing we creatures of God can be.”

“Jesus, my Brother, when I feel alone, remind me who I am: a child of the Father. Fill me with your Spirit so I can say with you, “Abba, Father.””

“This response of God might seem harsh, but over many years I have come to trust that healing is always a combination of taking care of ourselves and having confidence that God is taking care of us.”

“Jesus, you who know everything about me, let me hear you call my name.”

“I now can see that even the most vulnerable places, even the years that brought the greatest anguish, had been woven by God into his plan for my welfare. Those places and years did not harm me. Yes, they were hard. Yes, sometimes they broke me. Yes, I cannot deny that they had lifelong consequences. Yes, I have had to struggle because of them. But yes, in some mysterious way, I now know that they belong in my life.”

“God my Father, I rest my heart in your hands. I trust you. Lead me.”

“In Christ, God’s kingdom is already unfolding. Nothing can stop it. Nothing can ultimately harm us.”

“So put down your phone, disconnect from social media for a time, check a reliable source of news no more than once a day, and with all that saved time, come before Jesus in the Eucharist and listen.”

“God loves you. That is the whole story. God’s love is where it all began. God’s love sustains us no matter what. God’s love sanctifies us. God’s love forgives us again and again. God’s love will receive us one day when we pass from this life into eternity. God’s love is everything, and nothing has the power to cut us off from this love.”

“Jesus has an endless desire to be a part of our life. Again and again, he seeks us out and asks us this question: “Do you want to be made well? Do you want a life healed and whole?” And Jesus will respect your response.”

“Say yes. This is the longest yes you will ever say, because it starts from this moment and will be repeated every moment until you walk the streets of the New Jerusalem.”

“Jesus wants you to let him be at your side, no matter what you’ve done in your life. He only wants to know one thing: “Do you love me?””

“No matter the tragedy, anxiety, or sorrow that troubles you, the God who gives you breath is faithful. He will give you “the feet of a deer”: graceful and swift, surefooted in your reliance on him, undeterred by situations that would normally get you down.”

“God, give me the grace, courage, and inner strength to live victoriously.”

“One of the most beautiful gifts we can receive from God as we heal is the gift of remembering and reverencing the past with wonder and amazement.”

“In times of depression your life may feel broken to pieces, yet God can use this experience to give you what you need to become all you were meant to be.”

A sample day is:

13 You, O Lord, Call Me by Name

“Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.” When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.”
Luke 13:10–13

For eighteen years—maybe more than half her life—this woman so bent and crippled had been staring at the ground. She was isolated from everyone around her as they talked over her, around her, about her.

I often imagine what it must have been like for her to hear a voice that spoke to her with such gentleness that Sabbath day. What was in her heart as she crossed the floor of the synagogue toward Jesus as everyone looked on? Though others may not have noticed her except when she was in their way, Jesus had always seen her. Her neighbors might not have wanted to get involved. After all, eighteen years is a very long time to care about someone who’s ill. Jesus, however, reached out to her with the gift of new life.

For those of us who suffer with depression, the months and years of illness could seem interminable. We, too, might feel bent over under the weight of all we bear. Yet we, like this woman, are seen by Jesus.

Jesus, you who know everything about me, let me hear you call my name.”

I hope those quotes and sample day give you a feel for this book, and I believe the series. This was a great volume to read and pray through over a month; one that after a few weeks I started recommending to a couple of friends. I benefitted from the reading. It is an easy volume to engage with, and you will benefit based on how much effort you put in. It would be a great book and series for teens, young adults and us older adults as well.

It is a great book and excellent series. I can easily recommend it.

Prayer of Trust
Prayer in Times of Anxiety
Jesus, Live in Me
Act of Confidence in God
God’s Dream for Me
Cor Dulce, Cor Amabile (Dear Heart, Loving Heart)
Prayer of Abandonment
Act of Abandonment

I highlighted a few passages while working through this volume, they are:

“In the Gospel Jesus, sent by the Father, announces that we are loved more than the wildflowers and sparrows that God cares for. He whispers this love in quiet conversations, displays this love in dramatic healings, reassures us of this love at the Last Supper, offers this love in laying down his life for us, and remains with us in his love in the Eucharist.”

“If you doubt that God sees you, if you feel that you’re no one special, look how he cares for these simple flowers that grow here and there and everywhere. God cares much more for you.”

“Even as adults, we are as vulnerable as a weaned child, embraced by God at every instant. We were created not to make it through life on our own, but to be cradled and beloved in the everlasting arms of God.”

“Transitions mean letting go of what we have cherished and letting in new horizons. Sometimes we leave behind seasons of our life that have been painful; other times, we find ourselves walking into an era that we’re dreading. God promises that when we are led down winding paths that make little sense to us, the situations we encounter are not random events.”

“We can have confidence that we, too, will be offered a second chance like this again and again—opportunities to be set free to love more lavishly, to reverse self-serving habits, in order to focus on the deeper joys that come with caring for others and living in uprightness and truth.”

“I have never come across anyone who had lost their trust in God who couldn’t remember at least one instant when they had been touched by the Lord’s love.”

“So for forty years, the Israelites wandered in the wilderness. There they experienced God’s power and compassion, his presence, and a care more tender than that of a mother. Although they lacked everything they needed and every possibility of taking care of themselves, God nevertheless caused them to flourish.”

A sample day is:

13 Who Will Separate Me from the Love of Christ?

If God is for us, who is against us? Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Romans 8:31, 35, 37

Paul wrote this passage after undergoing hardship, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, and perils. He is almost jubilant in his proclamation that nothing he has endured can separate him from Christ’s love.

However, we ourselves may feel that we lack that same kind of trust in the face of troubles that threaten to upend our lives. We may worry that we have failed.

It is important to note that Paul wrote the letter to the Romans toward the end of his life. His confidence in exalting Christ’s triumph over his every suffering had been crafted over many years of reflection, experience, and prayer.

Your own confident trust will grow gradually as you take small but courageous steps of faith. You can begin right now by speaking the words of this passage into the face of whatever hardship you are living.

Lord, I believe that nothing will ever have the power to separate me from you.”

I hope those quotes and sample day give you a feel for this book, and I believe the series. This was a great volume to read and pray through over a month. I benefitted from the reading. It is an easy volume to engage with, and you will benefit based on how much effort you put in. It would be a great book and series for teens, young adults and us older adults as well.

Finding Inner Peace - Kathryn J. Hermes, FSP - Just A Minute Meditations

I have picked up a few volumes in this series over the years but had not got around to reading any of them yet. As of the writing of this review there are 7 volumes in the series, 4 authors with Sister Kathryn having penned 4 of the volumes. I have four of them on my Kindle purchased over the last year and a bit. But while researching for this review I have found out, at least a few of them including this volume are a rebranding of volumes published 8 years ago under the titles “Mediations for …”

The description of this edition states:

“Are you burdened by feelings of anxiety? Do you long for peace amid the worries and fears of life? Rediscover God’s presence and providence with help from this pocket-sized book of 30 meditations. Each meditation includes a Scripture passage, a brief reflection from Sr. Kathryn James Hermes, FSP, and a short prayer. The book also features additional prayers to help foster peace and renew your awareness of God’s nearness.”

Another current description is:

“Are you burdened by feelings of anxiety? Do you long for peace amid the worries and fears of life?

This pocket-sized book of 30 meditations will help you rediscover God's presence and providence. Each meditation includes a Scripture passage, a brief reflection by Sister Kathryn James Hermes, FSP, and a short prayer. The book also features a collection of additional prayers to help foster peace and renew your awareness of God's nearness. Whether you are a beginner in prayer or seeking wisdom and direction for a difficult time, Finding Inner Peace offers guidance, support, and encouragement for your relationship with the Lord.

Finding Inner Peace is part of the Just a Minute Meditations series, a collection of themed meditation books to help you pray through the challenges of life.”

The description of the earlier edition is:

“For most of us, finding time to pause for prayer and meditation can be difficult--but it's essential for strengthening our relationship with God. In Meditations for Inner Peace, bestselling author Kathryn James Hermes, FSP, helps readers discover the great value that God places upon each one of us: she offers thoughts and meditations that will help you lift your eyes to the face of the One who loves you more than you could ever imagine. As you pray with them day after day, you will discover how God wants you to be content, as content as a baby in its mother's arms. Each meditation is carefully chosen to amaze you with what God has done for you in his gracious and marvelous act of redemption. The Just a Minute series of small books provides meditations on scripture, advice for daily struggles, and insights from the Gospel. This set of reflections is designed to help you develop one area of your spiritual life: finding the inner peace that only God can give. God will lead you to be interested in certain meditations, so you can go wherever he leads you. Each meditation takes just a few minutes to read, can be chosen at random, and is filled with encouragement and simple insights. These short meditations enable readers to connect with God's heart through scripture and listen to what he is saying to them.”

I highlighted a few passages while working through this volume, they are:

“God has smiled upon us since the creation of the world. These meditations are a simple support to help you lift your eyes to the face of the One who loves you more than you could ever imagine.”

“These words in Hebrews are written for you and me. We are not alone. Even if we feel lonely or there is no one to help us, we are always surrounded by the saints. At every moment we can call on them for assistance. They have run the race ahead of us and lived through similar struggles. Remember: You are not alone!”

“I once came across this definition of prayer: “To pray is to think of Jesus while loving him.” It was as if a fire had been kindled within me. Those simple words ignited an ardent fire in my brittle spirit that burned away bad habits and replaced them with a yearning for holiness.”

“Holy Spirit, stir up the ashes of my life and relight my inner fire. Amen.”

“When we suffer with anxiety, we can forget that God tells us again and again that he understands that we are dust, that we are fragile, and that we are so in need of him.”

“Know that when God looks at you, he sees not how you don’t measure up, but how beautiful you are as the work of his hands and his dear child.”

“Only the Pharisee, a good man and a strict observer of the Law, is not fortunate. He saw no need to reach out of himself and beg God for justice, blessing, mercy, or vision. The Pharisee felt he had everything he wanted or needed. Jesus, instead, came for those who had no one but God to depend on. Do you need God? If you do, you are indeed fortunate.”

“Like Peter—the professional fisherman who couldn’t force the fish into his net but discovered that someone else could fill his nets on command—we realize our smallness in the midst of a creation so vast it can’t be controlled or explained. We are indeed powerless in the face of so many things in life. Jesus wants to work miracles for you, in your boat, where you live and work today—miracles that will help you see what he wants to do in your life and the mission he has given you. Stay awake!”

“Come, Jesus, into my boat. I long to be surprised by your generosity today. I long to witness the evidence of your care for me. Come!”

“This Gospel, however, puts us squarely in the realm of the reality that only faith can see. God is as real and involved in our lives as when he asked Mary to be the mother of his Son.”

“Mary, show us God’s face once more. Teach us to hear his voice again and again. Amen.”

A sample day is:

13 Wordlessly Embrace His Feet

After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. . . . The angel said . . . “Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him.’” . . . Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce this to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
     Matthew 28:1, 5, 7–10 (NABRE)

Jesus’ death had shattered the world of his first followers. I can imagine the news of the crucifixion passing quickly from one disciple to another: the hushed suspense, the quiet agony, the shock, the fear, the sorrow. Then suddenly, less than three days later, they literally run into him, alive. Jesus must have stood there before the women with exquisite tenderness, his heart full of compassion for their sorrow. I wonder if they stopped to notice the kindness in his eyes. The events that seem to lead us to Calvary, and the power of our fears, are not greater than the love of our Savior. Jesus stands before you also with great kindness in his eyes and tenderness in his heart, reminding you again and again: I am alive!

You are alive! You are here! Do not let my fears keep me from seeing you!”

I hope those quotes and sample day give you a feel for this book, and I believe the series. This was a worthwhile volume to read and pray through over a month. I benefited from it, a couple of the days I ended up reading more than once. It is an easy volume to engage with, and you will benefit based on how much effort you put in. It would be a great book and series for teens, young adults and us older adults as well.

It is a good book and start to what looks like a great series. I can easily recommend it.

Additional Resources

The introduction begins with these words:

“The book in your hands is about Saint Joseph, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus Christ. If you are leafing through the pages of this book, you probably have a very special intention you are holding in your heart. Perhaps you want to sell a house. Maybe you are accompanying someone who is approaching his or her final hours on earth. You could be looking for a job or starting a business. You may have financial difficulties or be looking for protection for your family. Or perhaps you never knew your father, or your father abandoned or hurt you, and now you are looking for a second father. If so, Saint Joseph is your patron saint. As head of the Holy Family, Saint Joseph experienced many of these things in his own life, as we shall see. He is a powerful intercessor before God for our needs.”

And further we are told:

“In our archives there is a precious book in Italian about Saint Joseph — its binding taped and its pages torn. A woman had purchased the book from a Daughter of Saint Paul in 1933. Forty years later, in 1973, she returned the book to the sisters, stating that her devotion to Saint Joseph was strong and that the saint had provided for her many times when she was greatly in need. Although the book was worn and the pages ripped, she thought someone else might still be able to use it to grow in devotion to Saint Joseph!”

This could become such a book. A book that is used over and over again. Weather prayers are said to Saint Joseph daily, upon occasion, or in time of specific need. There are many wonderful stories and prayers in this volume. Some of the stories in this volume were familiar to me, such as the story from the 1800s of the miraculous staircase of Our Lady of Light Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Or about the oratory in Montreal. Others were new to me like the tradition of Saint Joseph’s Table or the story of the Fava Beans were new to me.

The book is split into three nearly equal parts. The first is information and history. The Second is personal stories of Saint Joseph’s intercession and the final third is a collection of prayers. The book is more than worth the price for any one of those three sections. But when you combine them it becomes a book of incredible worth and value to Catholics.

This is an excellent book, and one I am very thankful I came across.
