This was my twelfth book by Andrew Clements in under a year. I can freely admit that along with Chris d'Lacey are currently my favorite middle grade authors. I have been alternating between them and reading a book a week over the summer and into the fall. Between d'Lacey and Clements their styles are very different. For Andrew Clements for the most part his books are written in a very realistic style. But this series is the excepting to that rule. I have read the first four books in this series in just over a month and eagerly anticipate the wrap up in book 5 shortly.   

These books follow directly one after the other, starting with Fear Itself, then We the Children, followed by The Whites of Their Eyes, and then this volume. Things have gotten desperate if the kids want to save Oakes School will be demolished  in 11 days and the property turned into a theme park. But the good news is the team of Keepers is growing, we now have the three children, and they are following the clues to Captain Oakes safeguards to save the school. But the enemy is getting even nastier. Lyman the fake janitor has called in reinforcements, Wally has hidden cameras around the school and he and Lyman have taken to following the children even outside of school. The Glennley group has even offered to make Ben's mom rich by offering he an exclusive real estate contract, and they have threatened Jill's father's finances. But the team is growing closer together, and as mentioned it is growing. With the access to assets left for them they now have legal counsel, and are working all angles to save the school. But will it be enough? Do they have enough time to solve the clues get the help and save their school and maybe even their community?

The deeper themes that appeared in the last book are worked upon even more in this volume. The three friends growing closer together! Both Ben and Robert realize that their years of competitiveness were fed by misunderstandings. They really are gelling into a team and dealing with many of their personal life issues from the present and the past.

Adam Stower has does some more wonderful illustrations to supplement the story. There are a number of full pages illustrations and also numerous smaller pieces throughout the book. In the eBook edition all the pictures are done in black and green.

With each volume the action picks up, and the books grow more intense. It leaves you hungry to figure out what will happen next. And after finishing this book there is only one to go.

The greatest strengths of Clements writings in this series and others I have read are the characters and their personal development because of what they go through. The big difference in this series is we have three main characters, Ben, Robert and Jill. And each of them is growing and together they are helping each other in more ways than they originally expected.

I have been hooked on Clements books for a while now I am really enjoying this series and can highly recommend it. This is another great read by a gifted author!

I have read almost 20 books by Chris d'Lacey in just under a year now. Until this one I have loved all of his books that I have read. This picture book is an interesting concept but it failed to catch with either my youngest two children or myself. 

The story is about a young boy that wants to juggle. The problem is every time he tries to juggle he makes a mess or breaks things. And things keep getting worse until finally he learns his lesson.

Gus Clarke has illustrated over 30 books, and written a number himself as well.  From the information I can track down from what I can track down this was one of the last books that he illustrated. The illustrations were 'ok' usually my children pour over the illustrations again and again, often asking to go back, or even reread immediately. That did not happen this time.

It was worth tracking down this book to read some of Chir d'Lacey's earliest works, and we have donated it to my children's school library. But it is far from our favorite by d'Lacey.

I have read through the 7 volume series In Conversation with God, edited by Francis Fernandez a number of times. So when I recently say that Francis Fernandez Carvajal has edited a number of other books I immediately picked them up. Having read two of them so far I am very thankful I did. This books are excepts from a forthcoming much longer volume. The introduction of this book states: "This collection of quotations aims to be useful to someone looking for points to ponder in prayer, for those preparing a homily or a talk, or an article for publication. The Introduction offers a reflection on the theme which can serve as a basis for a homily or a talk. Then follow some references to Sacred Scripture, followed by quotations from the Magisterium, the Fathers of the Church, and the saints. This publication is taken from an Anthology [in preparation] and paragraph numbers are the ones used there." And that is exactly what you get in these short volumes. 

In this book you get concise short teachings on prayer. The first chapter is numerous bible quotes on; the prayers of Jesus, Christian prayers and prayers of the church. And then each chapter after that is a number of quotes from church fathers, the magisterium, Saints and others from church history and even more recent authors.

In fact between chapters 2 and 17 we have 159 quotes on prayer, points that can be used in writings, preparing talks and also for personal reflection and meditation. To be honest there are so many great quotes it made it almost impossible to pick a few to share, but to give you a few samples, I had to make some hard choices.

3740 Prayer is an elevation, an application of our mind and of our heart to God, to make known to Him our wants and to ask for His assistance (Curé of Ars, Sermon on Prayer).

3749 All the blessed (except infants) have been saved by prayer. All the damned have been lost through not praying; if they had prayed, they would not have been lost (St Alphonsus Liguori, Prayer: the Great Means to Salvation and Perfection, 1, 1).

3761 When we speak with God in the prayer, the Son is united to us, and when he prays, the body of the Son does it united to the head. In this way the one Saviour Our Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prays for us, prays in us, and while at the same time it is He to whom we direct our prayers. He prays for us as our priest; he prays in us as our head; he receives our prayer as our God (St Augustine, Commentary on Psalm 85).

3833 This is how the early Christians lived, and this is how we too should live: meditating the doctrine of our faith until it becomes a part of us; meeting our Lord in the Eucharist; the personal dialogue - prayer without anonymity - face to face with God. This must constitute, so to speak the ultimate substance of our behaviour (St Josemaría Escrivá, Christ is passing by, 134).

3853 For us, light is the intelligence, which shows itself to be dark or lit up, depending on the quantity of light. When one neglects prayer, which feeds light, the intelligence quickly darkens through lack of light (St John Chrysostom, Catena Aurea 4).

Hopefully those 5 samples wet you appetite for this wonderful little book. I can highly recommend this book and if the other 5 are just as good I cannot wait to read them and the whole anthology when it becomes available. A wonderful book available at a great price!

Over the past few years, I have read a few books, and listened to some audio teaching by Patrick Lencioni, I have been impressed with all of his teaching I have encountered. My introduction was a group exercise working through The Five Dysfunctions of a Team done in conjunction with a DISC assessment for the seven of us. There is something so accessible about his style of writing a parable to teach the main lesson and then break it down. And this book does that on an even larger scale, I would say almost two-thirds of this book is an extended story. But both the story and the breakdown make it memorable and easily accessible.

In the introduction Patrick Lencioni says "Of the three virtues, this one needs the most clarification because it is not what it might seem; it is not about intellectual capacity. In the context of a team, smart simply refers to a person's common sense about people." And it is more than just overcoming the 5 dysfunctions of a team. For most of those 5 can be taught, but the three essential virtues are harder to teach especially if someone is deficient in more than one.

"The ramifications of all this are undeniable. Leaders who can identify, hire, and cultivate employees who are humble, hungry, and smart will have a serious advantage over those who cannot. They'll be able to build stronger teams much more quickly and with much less difficulty, and they'll significantly reduce the painful and tangible costs associated with politics, turnover, and morale problems. And employees who can embody these virtues will make themselves more valuable and marketable to any organization that values teamwork."

I have been part of in house leadership programs at three different employers over the past 30 years. And yet this book in a simple story captures something that though very simple really and truly is essential to have healthy thriving teams, and through those teams healthy and thriving departments and companies. According to Lencioni the three essential virtues are humble, hungry and smart.

Humble - Hungry - Smart

"Of course, to recognize and cultivate humble, hungry, and smart team members, or to become one yourself, you first need to understand exactly what these deceptively simple words mean and how all three together make up the essential virtues of an ideal team player."

Humble
Patrick describes humble as - "Humility is the single greatest and most indispensible attribute of being a team player." And he hammers home his definition of it with a quote "C.S. Lewis addressed this misunderstanding about humility when he said "Humility isn't thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less." And to be honest this might be the hardest to measure.

Hungry
In writing about hungry people Lencioni declares: "Hungry people are always looking for more. More things to do. More to learn. More responsibility to take on. Hungry people almost never have to be pushed by a manager to work harder because they are self-motivated and diligent. They are constantly thinking about the next step and the next opportunity." They want to be the go to person. They love to serve and desire to be known as hard working and diligent.

Smart
This one is a little harder but Patrick states: "Of the three virtues, this one needs the most clarification because it is not what it might seem; it is not about intellectual capacity. In the context of a team, smart simply refers to a person's common sense about people."

Having finished this book shortly after transitioning jobs, I realize how important it is to have these traits personally, but also to see them in coworkers and in the management teams. Patrick in the breakdown offers some excellent advice for how to hire for these three characteristics, how to assess current employees, how to develop employees who lack one or more of the virtues and how to embed these virtues in your organization.

I have had a former director say on many occasions he wish he had more people like me. And though at times I struggle to live these three virtues I believe it is something I have done without knowing the framework, and now that I know the framework can work on my weaker areas. A few years ago I recommended a kid at work for an internal role change, when my director asked my why, I responded that 'you cannot teach work ethic' you can teach technology but character is much harder to change. I was correct and he flourished in his new role. Again it was an example of these three cardinal virtues.

To be honest this is one of the best business books I have ever read and as such I can highly recommend it.

I have long been a fan of Bif Naked's music. And knowing some of her story, and the lyrics of her music I was aware she had been through the ringer, and likely more than once. I was not prepared for how much one person had gone through. Let alone gone through and yet always seems so positive and energetic and with such strong fight.

This woman has suffered so much abuse and yet remained strong. Now to be honest the book is in many sections not an easy read. She provides so very specific details of traumatic events. To be honest I had to take a break and come back to the book, not being able to read it through. There are a number of entertaining stories in this volume and in the 41 short chapters Bif manages to bare all. She is open and honest with her struggles, her trials and her triumphs. She shares about life on the road, life in a band and then life as the lead in a solo act. She is open about her experimentations with alcohol, drugs and with a fluid sexuality. But she also comes back to living the straight edge. But even while living the straight edge a person can make mistakes and end up in situations they just want to get over.

From the stories in this book Bif has an incredible ability to compartmentalize, and just get through whatever life or others have thrown at her. She is a strong powerful woman who has been on a lifelong journey of self-discovery. Through that process, and in her sharing with us, she is open an honest. She is far more transparent about her faults, failings and mistakes than most people.

Bif states: "I am an Indian-born, born-abroad Canadian (or like I enjoy saying, "I was born a broad"). I have been these two things for as long as my memory goes back. I learned my patriotism from my father-or at the very least, how to brag about it. He was an American who gave up his citizenship to become Canadian." She was adopted and has an Indian adopted sister and a sister born to her adoptive parents. And to be honest she is the Queen of Canadian Rockers. She has a large loyal following at home, and has had great success in Europe. But in all of that she continued to give back. She often promotes young Canadian talent especially female acts and bands.

Bif was the focal point of a reality program that followed her engagement and wedding. She has had breast cancer, and survived, she said "My cancer is now a memory, my last treatment being in 2009, making me a Big Girl Survivor with five-plus cancer-free years under my belt. I still use chemoprevention to prevent recurrence, and am enjoying my full and racy menopause. I know I am lucky to be alive and am proud to have a piece of catheter tubing, left from my surgical port, in my chest, as a souvenir." She stands proud of who she is and who she is still becoming. At the end of the book she states; "The future is like sun rays to me, and I tilt my soul in the direction of this light. I am still unshakable in my faith in people and in my relentless positivity, and I will not ever change that. I love life, even more every day, no matter what's ahead of me. I love it all: the past, the present, and the future. My goals in life are simple, really-to make and keep everybody happy. On the stage, on the page, in the sick wards, or in my mother's kitchen." And that is what she strives to do, day in and day out.

No this book was not an easy read, but as an artist I respect and appreciate I pushed on and finished the book. For all the hardships she has experienced she lives joy and positive attitude and for that she is a shining example.

This was the third book by Father Michael E. Gaitley that I have read this year, but my introduction to his writing was his piece in the collection Beautiful Mercy. But this book I worked through with a group on facebook. This book is an incredible read. Often when writing reviews of non-fiction books I will draw a few quotes from the book that I highlighted while reading the book. But during my first read through of this book I highlighted 78 passages.  

In this book Father Gaitley looks at the history of Marian consecration through three sets of eyes, first through the historical eyes of St. Luis de Montfort, and next those of St. Maximilian Kolbe and finally St. Mother Teresa. Working throught this book either in a group or individually will be an amazing experience.

I have heard a lot about Marian consecration over the last few years. But I had also heard that St. Louis de Montfort's method was very complicated. So I had never really looked into it. Then author James Hahn started a group wot work through this book together, and I jumped at the chance to work through this. 

Father Gaitley does an incredible job of drawing from numerous sources to highlight the meaning behind consecration. He draws extensively from popes and also the three saints that we specifically use as a framework for out teaching. In the introduction Father Gaitley states: "Marian consecration basically means giving Mary our full permission (or as much permission as we can) to complete her motherly task in us, which is to form us into other Christs.". One of the the things I appreciated most about this self-retreat is the prayer. I found that through the daily reading and short prayers each day my own prayer life intensified. I arose early each day to work through that day's chapter, to reflect upon it. I found it often coming back throughout the day. Another quote from Fr. Gaitley that really hit me was "A person practices purity of intention when he directs his thoughts, words, and actions not to himself or another creature but to a divine purpose or mission, and ultimately to God." And really as Christians that should be a goal for all of us.

I have always had closeness to Mary our mother, even when away from the Catholic church for a while. This book helped me understand theologically and experientially Mary and her role in my life in a fuller way.  Father Gaitley states: "Mary's new motherhood is not some vague or abstract sort of thing. It's concrete and personal. And even though it's universal, it's also intensely particular. Mary is your mother. She is my mother." And she is. And this book will help youi grow in understanding that.

This was an incredible read and I highly recommend it and look forward to reading more by Father Gaitley.

In under a year I have read 16 books including this one by Chris d'Lacey. It is easy to say that currently he is one of my favourite all time children's and young adult authors. And this book was worth the wait. I find it hard to start series when I do not know how many books there will be or as they just are beginning; in part because the wait for the next volume can be so hard. And for someone in North America where this particular series is being released more than a year behind those in Europe makes it even harder to wait. But d'Lacey's writing is so addictive I had to start this series and am hooked.

In the previous book The Wearle, we find out about a second dragon colony come to Erth they have found out what happened to the previous colony but things are still amiss. Ren a young hom 'Human' boy can speak dragon tongue and is now with the two dragon children. A dark stranger has come into the remains of the Kaal village and is challenging the men and bewitching the women. There is unrest in the dragon colony and strange events stirring up both the dragons and the humans. And Ren is stuck in the middle with only a few dragons he can or does trust. 

This tale was a little stranger than the first volume in the series. And there is far more action. There are battles with dark forces, and what appears to be a dragon legend coming to life again. Ren must figure out the pieces if he would save is tribe and those dragons he cares for. He is stuck now not in the middle of just humans and dragons but also the beginnings of some fractions within the dragon kingdom. He certainly has had a lot of problems all stemming from a curious boy who wanted to know more about the dragons who had driven his people from their ancestral home. 

This book was very hard to put down. In fact I stayed up reading much, much later than I should have just to finish it. Book 1 on this series was the first book I finished in 2016, and ranked at the top of the 177 books I read in 2015. This book is an excellent follow up, that unfortunately leaves you wanting the next book, which likely will not be out for at least a year.
