Why Suffer - Mary Ann Budnik - Scepter Booklet 121 New Cover

I first read a copy of this while on retreat twenty years ago in 2006. I read an old copy of the Scepter Booklet edition of it. Many of which are now available for free on the Scepter site. In 2026 a quote from the book was a social media post from Scepter, it really struck me.

“Much suffering is caused by what we do and what we fail to do.”

It struck me so much I shared it on social media and had numerous interactions. When I checked I saw when I read it but back then I only reviewed stuff I tried to publish in papers and magazines. Now I try and review everything I read. So I decided to read it again, this review grew out of that second reading.

The Scepter Booklet edition description is:

“"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" How often do these words of Scripture come to mind when sorrow and suffering strike? A lost job, a sick child, death in the family, financial setbacks, a problem marriage, or chronic illness can find us turning to God with tears in our eyes and anguish in our hearts. Many of us were taught as children that everything that happens to us has a divine purpose, including pain and suffering. But it often is hard to see God's love and providence in pain.”

One online description of a different edition of this book is:

“Suffering has never been a popular topic. In fact, most of us find it downright distasteful, probably because suffering dogs our footsteps as we progress through life. Yet, suffering has its purpose. It matures us emotionally and spiritually, while it also plays a part in helping us to develop the various virtues.”

The chapters in the booklet are:

Introduction
Benefits of Suffering
Suffering as a Teacher
We Suffer With Christ
The Scandal of the Cross
“A Bad Night in a Bad Inn”
Lessons to be Learned

I highlighted a few passages while working through this booklet, some of them are:

“Many of us were taught as children that everything that happens to us has a divine purpose, including pain and suffering. But it often is hard to see God's love and providence in pain!”

“Today, as in the days before Christ, Satan is allowed to test us. Some of the saints have experienced such testing in a special way. St. Francis of Paola has told us: "The devil has a consuming hatred against the servants of Christ. The malignant one, seeing that he cannot steal their souls, vents his most terrible wrath on them, forcing them to resist every type of suffering."”

“A third cause of suffering is our own nature—our weakness and failings such as pride, selfishness, lack of self-control--in short, our lack of virtue. Much suffering is caused by what we do and what we fail to do. The gossip that we never should have passed on can destroy our peace of mind and the lives of others. Lack of self-control in regard to food, drink, and drugs has destroyed many lives and families.”

“But growing in virtue is not easy. Some self-discipline is needed, and the development of good habits to start driving out the bad ones. Some important helps are frequent or daily Mass and Communion, frequent confession, and spiritual direction. But it is a puzzling fact that few people want to alleviate their sufferings by growing in virtue. They almost seem content with their misery.”

“Another cause of suffering is our own lack of mortification. Our frail natures resist anything that looks like penance.”

“"That piece of cake looks so good.... I'll skip dessert tomorrow instead of tonight." But mañana never comes! It's easier to say "yes" than "no" to a second drink at a cocktail party.”

“There are so many excuses why we shouldn't go to Mass, or take time for mental prayer, or do that work of charity. Yet without a spirit of mortification, we cannot grow spiritually. So God comes to our rescue and imposes a mortification on us in the form of some cross or tribulation.”

“Only in retrospect can we ordinarily see the benefits or purpose of our suffering. It's like a painting. When we are too close to the canvas we see only splotches of color here and there, but when we view it from the proper distance we can see the beauty of the work as a whole. So with our sufferings. While we won't be able to see the entire picture until eternity, we can see meaningful bits and pieces once the suffering has passed.”

“Suffering should strengthen our love of God and give us a clearer vision of Christ's message in the Gospels. By taking up our cross we become Christlike and able to bring others to him.”

“The crosses that add color to our lives are never selected by us. They are given to us by God for a specific reason. God's ways often are an unexpected mystery.”

“As we carry our burdens, there are times when we will stumble. Remember that Christ also stumbled, not once but three times, on his way to Calvary. And so will we. The secret of a successful Christian struggle is not in the failures, but in the struggle to begin again and again every day, and many times during each day.”

“If you find yourself being bitter and gloomy, instead of being at peace with yourself, maybe your condition is a result of you not using frequent confession, and frequent or daily Mass, to grow in love of God. We must turn to prayer, confession, and the Mass to find comfort in adversity. Turn also to Mary, cause of our Joy, to learn docility and acceptance.”

I hope those quotes give you a feel for this booklet. It is an excellent little volume even with a second reading almost twenty years after the first. A number of years ago I wanted to track down all the old Scepter Booklets and read them. I did not plan on reviewing them, just reading them because all of them I had read were great. I believe there were originally over 200 volumes in the series. Currently 54 are available for free. And I have over 100 in various digital editions.

I can easily recommend this specific Scepter Booklet and all of them from the series I have read!

First I must state how excited I am to see these Scepter booklets coming back into print. Of the roughly 200 booklets I have only ever been able to track down about a third of the older out of print editions. But not only is Scepter bringing them back into print, they are completely redoing them and these are beautiful new eBook editions. This specific booklet was originally booklets 61 and 62 was originally published in 1977. The chapters in this booklet are:

The Morning Offering
Morning prayer
Holy Mass
Reading of the Gospel and other spiritual reading
The Angelus
A visit to the Blessed Sacrament
Afternoon prayer
The Holy Rosary
Examination of conscience
Frequent confession
Praying the Hail Holy Queen on Saturdays
Always: Presence of God
Consideration of our divine filiation
Work
Cheerfulness

From the introduction the goal of this plan is to:

"This fully personalized plan, the result of reflection, will enable us to accomplish more with the time we have available, and will help us to be realists. In this sense a plan of life expands in a practical way to embrace both the human and the spiritual. For a Christian, the full life is nothing more than human life itself lived in a Christian manner. Hence the importance of religious formation and of the interior life in order to sanctify human activities and, at the same time, to turn them into instruments of apostolate."

And from there it states:

"What follows are some of these norms of piety. They are not all of those practiced by ordinary Christians. Indeed, some very important ones, like the day of recollection, annual retreat and aspirations, have been left out. But in this and the following booklet (Scepter Booklet No. 62) you will find fifteen norms, each with a brief explanation to help you live them better."

And that is what the rest of the book does. It explains what the 15 norms are and how to integrate those into your life. The booklet is short, practical and easily applied. The advice in this book can be applied by students in high school or someone who is retired. Any Christian who wishes to deepen their spiritual life can use this book as a blueprint for changes, for growth to establish a patterns and habits in the spiritual life.

The book concludes with a chapter on Cheerfulness. J.M. Muntadas states:

"Cheerfulness cannot be bought and sold; it has to be earned. The secret lies in piety, in sincerity, docility, and hard work. Of course we come home at the end of the day tired, worn out. But sad?-never. And why? "Cheerfulness is an integral and necessary part of Christian psychology, even in the midst of adversity and tribulation"(29). God made us to be happy, eternally in our heavenly home, but the happiness of heaven belongs to those who have known how to find happiness on earth. It is a norm for which we have to train."

And I must admit that Cheerfulness is the one I need to work on most after reading this booklet. I have been praying to live more joy for a while, and this book really reinforced that intention.

This is a great little book. I believe that if you read and apply the lessons within it you will experience spiritual growth! This is a great book in an amazing series.

Seeking Christ in Reading - Rev. Eugene Boylan

Seeking Christ in Reading
Rev. Eugene Boylan
Scepter Press
ISBN 9781594172953

I have read this booklet three times now, first in 2007, then in 2010 and now in 2017 the new eBook version. This booklet has been completely redone and is an excellent little read. Originally there was just over 200 booklets in the series from Scepter, I believe, that were available in English and it is great that they are being made available again. I also believe that this is the only booklet by Eugene Boylan in the series. And this booklet is an excerpt from This Tremendous Lover. And at just under 40 pages it packs a lot of punch. The chapters in this booklet are:

Gripping The Imagination
The Barrier Of Boredom
Essential For Progress
Love, Not Sentiment
The Educated Catholic
A Disease Of The Mind
Religious And Laity
Reading As Food
A Daily Exercise
Unfortunate Biographies
Ask For Help
As Essential As Eating
Reading And Meditation
Indefinite Boundaries
About The Author

The introduction states: "Now if there is one thing for which modern conditions have produced a special necessity, it is the regular practice of spiritual reading. It is, of course, only a question of degree; for reading, or some other form of instruction, was always necessary" It has been a Christian practice since nearly the beginning. But today it is one that often slides by the side over taken by the urgent or that which easily distracts us. The purpose of this booklet is to remind us of the need for spiritual reading, but also to be cautious in all that we read. This booklet written well before the internet age raises some great questions about that with which we occupy our minds. And in today's technology age the distractions, which Rev Boylan speaks about are even more evident. Boylan goes on to state: "What has been said of periodicals is no less true of books taken generally; and there is another effect common to all such reading: it produces a distaste, not merely for the things that really matter, but also for the style and manner in which those things are presented in spiritual books. The result is that when one does by an effort force oneself to open a spiritual book, it requires a still greater effort to keep it open, and not to close it with a yawn. And, truth to tell, it is not always the reader who is to blame." And as an avid reader I can say that it is so true. It is easier to pick up a Clancy, Baldacci, Ludlum, or Robert B. Parker then to tackle an Aquinas, de' Liguori, Pope Benedict, or a Taylor Marshall. But this book reminds us of the importance of the effort and the greater reward from engaging in spiritual reading.

Boylan declares: "Even if a man's reading of Catholic theology were only enough to teach him to know how much he does not know about it, a lot would be gained. But there is no reason why any educated Catholic should not go further, and bring his knowledge of Catholic theology up to the standards of the other branches of his knowledge - in principle if not in detail." And it is a worthy challenge.

This is an excellent little read. And I am sure it will cause you to look at what you read, and how you read in a different light. This is one of the original Scepter booklets; in fact it was booklet 130. I was able to track down only print copies of about 60 of the original booklets, and am so excited that they are now becoming available in eBook formats.

It is now available for free in a wonderful eBook edition, along with many other booklets from the series. Scepter is in the process of updating all of the old booklets and making them available in a new format and presentation. I have read a number of the booklets and look forward to them all being available again. This book and the whole series are amazing resources to help you grow in your faith. And you really cannot beat the price! So why not give it a try.

The Donkey at the Waterwheel - Malcolm M. Kennedy - The Lay Spirituality of St. Josemaría Escrivá

The Donkey at the Waterwheel:
The Lay Spirituality of St. Josemaría Escrivá
Malcolm M. Kennedy
Scepter Press

ASIN B06XBXWG51

This booklet is now available in a new eBook format. It has been completely redone and is a wonderful little gem. I believe that there were originally just over 200 booklets in the series that were available in English and it is a great blessing that they are being made available again. I do not know if Malcom M. Kennedy wrote any other booklets in this series but this one is a great little read.

The chapters in this booklet are:
Introduction
Opus Dei is born
A hunted priest
Human and supernatural
Work not an obstacle
Jesus the artisan
A triple dimension
A clerical misunderstanding
God plays with his children
To be little
Fires of hope
Homily: Passionately Loving the World
About Scepter

The first part of the book is part history of Opus Dei, Part biography of St. Josemaria Escriva and a bit of personal reflection from the author. The second part of the book is one of Saint Josemaria's homilies, Passionately Loving the World. And together the 42 pages in this volume bring encouragement, and reminders about what we are here, and what our role should be. Here are a few of the sections I highlighted while reading through this book. I hope this sampling will pique your interest in pursuing this read.

"Try to remember what a donkey is like - now that so few of them are left. Not an old, stubborn, vicious one that would give a kick when you least expected, but a young one with his ears up like antennae. He lives on a meagre diet, is hard working and has a quick cheerful trot. There are hundreds of animals more beautiful, more deft and strong. But it was a donkey Christ chose when he presented himself to the people as king in response to their acclamation. For Jesus has no time for calculations, for astuteness, for the cruelty of cold hearts, for attractive but empty beauty. What he likes is the cheerfulness of a young heart, a simple step, a natural voice, clean eyes, attention to his affectionate word of advice. That is how he reigns in the soul."

"No! We cannot lead a double life if we want to be Christians. There is just one life, made of flesh and spirit. And it is this life which has to become, in both soul and body, holy and filled with God. We discover the invisible God in the most visible and material things.
There is no other way. Either we learn to find our Lord in ordinary, everyday life, or else we shall never find Him. That is why I can tell you that our age needs to give back to matter and to the most trivial occurrences and situations their noble and original meaning. It needs to restore them to the service of the Kingdom of God, to spiritualize them, turning them into a means and an occasion for a continuous meeting with Jesus Christ."

"I must finish now. I told you at the beginning that I wanted to announce to you something of the greatness and mercy of God. I think I have done so, in talking to you about sanctifying your everyday life. A holy life in the midst of secular reality, lived without fuss, with simplicity, with truthfulness. Is this not today the most moving manifestation of the magnalia Dei (Sir 18:5), of those prodigious mercies which God has always worked, and does not cease to work, in order to save the world?"

And then the book concludes with these words from Saint Josemaria Escriva: "Faith, finally, my beloved daughters and sons, to show the world that all this is not just ceremonies and words, but a divine reality, by presenting to mankind the testimony of an ordinary life which is made holy, in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and of holy Mary."

This is one of the original Scepter booklets; in fact it was booklet 165. It is now available for in a wonderful eBook edition, along with many other booklets from the series. Scepter is in the process of updating all of the old booklets and making them available in a new format and presentation. I have read a number of the booklets and look forward to them all being available again. This book and the whole series are amazing resources to help you grow in your faith. A Treasure of Prayer by: James W. Albrecht

A Treasure of Prayers
James W. Albrecht
Scepter Press
ISBN 1889334340

This is a great little prayer book that has been in print continuously since it’s release in 1975. It is small and compact, easily carried around in your pocket or knapsack. It is an awesome collection of 33 Prayers. Gleaned from the Church’s history and fast treasury of prayers. Unlike Socia’s Handbook Of Prayers this book focus mush more on personal prayers, and less on corporate prayers, though it does contain Some of the standard one’s.

The first half of the book is side-by-side English and Latin Versions of prayers and the second half is more for personal devotion. In between the two sections is a great Prayer for use before the Blessed Sacrament, which is seldom found in other collections.

The Prayers are as follows:

Section I (Latin & English)
Sign of The Cross
Lord’s Prayer
Hail Mary
Glory Be
Blessing before Meals
Grace after Meals
The Confiteor
To the Holy Spirit
Adore Te Devote
Hail, Holy Queen
The Angelus
The Regina Coeli
Psalm 2
Psalm 51
Some Aspirations
To St. Michael
Athanasian Creed

Section II
Praying Before the Blessed Sacrament

Section III
Act of Faith
Act of Hope
Act of Love
Apostle’s Creed
Act of Contrition
Veni, Sancte Spiritus
Veni, Creator
Spiritual Communion
Personal Meditation
Way of the Cross
The Memorare
Mysteries of the Rosary
Litany of the Blessed Virgin
To St. Joseph
Sorrows and Joys of St. Joseph
To the Guardian Angel

With all of that there is so much Spiritual punch in such a little book. Well worth picking up to add variety to your times of prayer and devotion.
