Lately my children and I have been enjoying Chris d'Lacey's dragon books. But I wanted to give something else he has written a try. And this book was amazing. While reading it I thought of a few children I know, I could place many of them as characters chaptered in this story. Miss Everdue is putting on the play of Peter Pan and she believes there should be a spot for every student that wants to be in the play.

Robin, is rambunctious, sometimes does not focus, it excitable, and maybe a little shabby or sloppy in his dress but he has a big heart. At first he lands the roll of Smee the pirate. But after one too many incidents the Head of the school Mrs Meredith ban's Robin from the stage. However Miss Everdue soon realizes Robin has a photographic memory and has memorized the whole script. He can prompt from the wings and not be on stage. But sometimes the best laid plans go awry, especially when 3 cast members come down with the chicken pox. Soon the play is in jeopardy. The head agrees to play the crock, and Hook's understudy steps in.

This was a wonderful read with a few fun and interesting twists. I thought of a young friend of the family, he recently said he would never win the sticker race at school for a prize. When asked why in a sad voice he responded he is always messy and does not always listen well. It was so sad. And Robin had the same kind of attitudes pushed onto him, until that one fateful night … but you will need to read the book to find out of Robin can turn the tables in the production of Peter Pan.

This is a great read for those with children who struggle to be part of the in crowd. Or for those whose kids are in that crowd so they can learn what it feels like. Overall a great book for young readers and those who love them. As stated at the beginning another amazing book by Chris d'Lacey so give it a try.

The Pangram Killer - Brandon M. Lipani - A Serena Triton Detective Novel

The Pangram Killer
A Serena Triton Detective Novel
Brandon M. Lipani
ISBN 9781519540379
ASIN B0197PK7EM

There are a lot of pros and cons to this book. Knowing it is a first effort by an author I have cut this a little more slack than if it had been a seasoned writer. First I must say it was a pretty good story, it really kept my attention, and Serene Triton the main character is a really interesting detective. I enjoyed watching the mystery unfold and even though I do not read a lot of mysteries currently this was a fun novella.

There is a killer on the loose and all the victims are left with a panagram note taunting the police. At first the victims appear to be random but soon a link appears, they all seem to be related to the same criminal case. The pace is quick and the action fast in this book.

Now to some pros and cons.

The Pros:
Great first effort
Good characters
Well-paced story
Very entertaining

The Cons:
A few grammatical or spelling errors
Is really a novella or extended short story not a novel
Print version is listed at 154 pages, ebook is actually 80
Ending is really not believable

Most of the pros and cons are self-explanatory but I wanted to elaborate on the last con. Even in fiction we can only extend out disbelief so far. I cannot equate Serena Triton's actions at the end of the story with all the information provide by and about her throughout the book. However that being said it was still an enjoyable read, good entertainment and to be honest I hope we get more books about Triton in the near future, I know I would give them a read.

Recovering Faith: Stories of Catholics Who Came Home - Lorene Hanley Duquin

Recovering Faith:
Stories of Catholics Who Came Home
Lorene Hanley Duquin
Our Sunday Visitor
ISBN 9781592768783

This was an incredibly powerful read. 18 Stories of people who wandered away and came back to the church. Their reasons for leaving and also for return were varied and diverse. I actually picked up the book because Martin Sheen on the cover grabbed my attention. But once I started reading it I was familiar with a few of the contributors, specifically Dr. Kevin Vost. I have now read through this collection twice.

The power in these stories is that they are stories, they are peoples personal testimony of what caused them to fall away from the church and what brought them back home. It is a packed little volume.

The Stories are:
Teresa Tomeo - Catholic radio host, author, and motivational speaker
Leo Severino - Award-winning movie producer
Father John Fletcher, C.C. - A priest called to the ongoing renewal of the Church
Veronica Cavan - A coordinator of Annulment Companions
Clarence Thomas - U.S. Supreme Court justice
Amy Betros - Cofounder of St. Luke's Mission of Mercy
Martin Sheen - Award-winning television and motion-picture actor
Dr. Kevin Vost - Clinical psychologist and former atheist
Leah Darrow - Former contestant on the reality show America's Next Top Model
Danny Abramowicz - Author, speaker, and host of Crossing the Goal
Sally Mews - Founder of Catholics Returning Home
Father Eduardo Montemayor, S.O.L.T. - Popular speaker and workshop leader
Dean Koontz - Best-selling suspense novelist
Deacon Waldemar Sandoval - Coordinator of Landings ministry
Janet Morana - Executive director of Priests for Life
Dr. Francis Beckwith - Former president of the Evangelical Theological Society
Barbara Curtis - Author, lecturer, and blogger
Tom Peterson - Advertising executive and founder of Catholics Come Home

Another great feature of the book is the sidebars. These are short interjections, which go deeper into some point of church history, theology or doctrine that is mentioned in the stories. There is some great info for the person being drawn back to the church themselves, or for practicing Catholics as teaching moments, or for non-Catholics to gain knowledge of the truth.

Prayer of the Day - Prayer of Thanks - T.G. Morrow - Overcoming Sinful Anger

 PRAYER OF THANKS

Heavenly Father, I thank You for my very existence which You gave me out of the abundance of Your love and which You sustain at every moment. I thank You for my health, which I so often take for granted, for my family which I also take for granted. I thank You for my intellect, by which You enable me to think, and for my will, by which You enable me to love. Thank You for my body, and the food and drink by which You sustain it, and the shelter by which You protect it. Thank You for my soul, and the grace of Your Holy Spirit by which You nourish it

.
My every talent comes from You, my every possession, my every moment of time, for which I will be eternally grateful.

Thank You for Blessed Mary who intercedes for me before You. And thank You most of all for Jesus, who has given us new life, new hope, new love by his death and resurrection, and for the Church which brings Him to us each day. What an awesome, generous, loving God You are!

You ask me to worship You at least weekly and to pray to You without ceasing. It is my privilege and my joy to do so in thanksgiving for all You have given me.

Amen

The Fire Within - Chris d'Lacey - The Last Dragon Chronicles #1

The Fire Within
The Last Dragon Chronicles #1
Chris d'Lacey
Orchard Books
Scholastic
ISBN 9780439672443
eISBN 9780545414647

I have had most of the books from The Last Dragon Chronicles on my to be read shelf for a few years now. The covers grabbed my attention, I was intrigued by the write ups on the back. But I just kept not getting to them. Looking back I really wish I had sooner. It was not until I picked up Chris's other series The Dragons of Wayward Crescent and started reading them with my children that I discovered how wonderful an author he is. In the last month I have read 5 of his books and currently have 2 underway.

When reading children's books and young adult books some of my key ideas to make it an excellent book are: would I read it again, would I read it with my children, would I gift it to friends and family. To date all of the Chris d'Lacey books I have read fit into all three categories. This book was an amazing read. As reading it I could completely picture the events and was drawn into the world d'Lacey has created. This book is the interweaving of three stories, the story we are being told, the retelling of the last dragon's story, and the story that is being written within this story. And all three work together perfectly. I need to be pretty impressed with a book to give it 5 out of 5 stars, this one I wish I could give more.

This is also the story of the coming of David to Wayward Crescent and to the creation of his special dragon, Gadzooks. David has come as a border at 42 Wayward Crescent, Scrubbley, Massachusetts, he is in college in Geography and quickly realizes there is something strange at his new home and with Liz and Lucy Pennykettle the mother and daughter he is renting from. He also quickly realizes there is something strange about the Pennykettle dragons. David is also roped into writing a story for Lucy for her birthday. And into trying to rescue a squirrel with an injured eye named Conker. David is told to trust his Dragon - Gadzooks and the dragon will help him.

This is a wonderful story about magic, friendship, family and discovery. It was fun to read and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. This book comes with the highest of recommendation that I can give so give it a try.

Prayer of the day from Story of a Soul Saint Therese of Liseux

Prayer of the day from Story of a Soul Saint Therese of Liseux

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

Updated 2016-04-13

This post has been redacted because of personal conviction. I would appreciate if you say a prayer for me.

Hail Mary, full of grace.
Our Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
