I have now read ten books in the Encounter the Saints Series, from Pauline over the last few months. I have also now read three separate books about Fatima. And this little volume is wonderful in both categories. This book is newly updated, it was originally published in 2000 as Blesseds Jacinta and Francisco Marto. And the obvious reason for the updating was their canonization in May of 2017 by Pope Francis. And this book does an amazing job of telling this incredible story, and telling it in a way that will enthral children, and be informative and entertaining to adults.

 Unlike many books on Fatima that focus on all three children, but usually focus more on Lúcia Santos because she lived much longer. This volume focuses just on her cousins and their role in the appearances and in spreading the message of Our Lady of Fatima. It is a great book for young readers, for it models to them true devotion to Mary. The need for a focused prayer life even at younger ages. And that following God no matter what the cost will be worth it in the end. 

 One of the sections of the book that had the greatest impact on me was:
“The same ray of sunlight can have different effects. Passing through an odd-shaped piece of glass, it breaks up into a thousand bright colors. Falling directly on a white wall, it can make that wall as blinding as snow. When passing through a hand or a leaf, sunlight makes the object seem to glow from within.In the same way, Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia responded differently to the same apparitions. Lucia was to spread devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Jacinta was to make reparation for sinners. And Francisco? He would try to console God.”
And each of those three callings are still present in the world, to each of us in differing degrees. This book will provide inspiration; it provides a great example for the young and really for all of us. Another wonderful aspect of this book and the series is the prayer at the end of the book is wonderful; I have prayed it a few times with my children.

it must have been to see Mary, the Mother of God!
It took a lot of courage for you to be her messengers,
especially when people refused to believe
you, or made fun of you.
Thank you for bringing us Mary’s important
message about prayer and penance, Jacinta and
Francisco. Help me to pray for the peace that our
world needs so badly. Help me to offer my own
acts of love and sacrifice to make up in some small
way for the sins that offend God and the Blessed
Mother.
You are the two youngest children ever to be
considered for sainthood. Remind me that even
though I’m young, my love and my efforts to be
like Jesus can make a real difference in the world.
Please pray for me, Jacinta and Francisco.
Amen.

The book contains 5 very detailed pencil drawings from Mari Goering. The illustrations provide some details for specific events in the story. But there are not so many illustrations as to make it a picture book.

This is an amazing book in an incredible series. With every new volume that I read I am more inspired. My children and I love these books and believe that if you give them a try they will become favorites for you also.

This is the third book by Alfonseca that I have read in as many months. I am greatly enjoying his writings. This is the second book in the series: The Sleuths of the Spanish Transition, and has only just become available in English. I stand by my statement in an earlier review that Manuel's writings remind me of those by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jose Saramago, and to a lesser extent Paulo Coelho. This second story in the series is also extremely well written. But knowing the characters was a little more predictable. But that predictability did not detract from the mystery, in fact it enhanced it for in visiting the main characters it was like visiting old friends. 

 This story begins with a request for help from an unusual source. Gonzalo and Vicki accept the task of a young woman who has inherited some property and that is being threatened, or intimidated to let the property go. Because of propriety, and Gonzalo's need to register for university, it is decided that Vicki will accompany Diana to her vacation home and write to Gonzalo every day as she investigates. She is investigating the mysterious letter, also trying to figure out who wants Diana to abandon her vacation home, and why. But as with their last mystery, not everything is as it appears. Logic and reason might be able to help them solve the case, but one of them ends up in grave danger again. 

 Again in this book there are number of references to classical literature, specifically the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and also Jules Verne. This book has fewer references to science fiction, and movies, and focuses more on literary mystery references. And a few of the plot elements I was able to figure out but overall a wonderful read.

 I consider this book Catholic fiction. The author is Catholic, and the book though not overtly religious, the main characters have a faith and that faith shapes their character. In this book there is reference to premarital sex, not by the main characters and it is witnessed by others. But it is not graphic or overt. 

 This book is the second in a series. Currently there are four books in the series in Spanish. One can only hope that the remaining two will become available in English in short order. The book is translated by the author himself. I loved this book and the series. And really appreciate the literary offerings of Alfonseca. I have read three of his books and already have a fourth on the go. I look forward to reading more of his book and can highly recommend them to you. This book would be a fun read for those who enjoy a good mystery, or for fans of Marquez, Saramago, or Coelho. So why not give this book and this series a try.

 Again I highly recommend this book, and series.

I have read 20 of the 23 books available in the Catholic Answers Series. And of those 20 books that I have read Jim Blackburn has written three. His contributions to this amazing series are all excellent books. This specific volume deals with Scripture and Tradition. Jim explains so well his purpose in writing this book is too perfect to summarize, so in his own words:

“All Christians generally agree that Christian doctrine must be determined in accordance with God’s revelation. It makes sense that everything God has revealed is worthy of belief and, in many cases, necessary for salvation. Indeed, Jesus, quoting from Deuteronomy 8:3, emphasizes the importance of the word of God: “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’” (Matt 4:4).
Tragically, though, not all Christians agree on what God’s word is, and thus do not agree on all matters of Christian doctrine.
Most non-Catholic Christians claim that the Bible alone is the word of God. This is a relatively novel idea in the history of Christianity, having come to the fore only since the time of the Protestant Reformation. For most of Christian history, Christians have believed that Scripture does not constitute the entirety of the deposit of faith that the first Christians received long before a book of the New Testament was ever written (see Jude 3).
That faith was first delivered to the early Church orally, not in writing. Scholars nearly unanimously agree that the first books of the New Testament (1 and 2 Thessalonians) were not written until the middle of the first century, around A.D. 50–52. Yet, even without these books, the revelation of Jesus Christ was being spread through the oral teaching of the apostles and their successors. The books of the New Testament came to be written over a period of several decades, and it was not always immediately apparent exactly how they should be understood (see 2 Peter 3:16). So the early Christians came to interpret them correctly through authoritative oral teaching—what the Church calls Sacred Tradition (see 2 Peter 1:20–21).
Since the Protestant Reformers rejected Sacred Tradition, the descendants of their faith tradition have been left with only their own fallible interpretations of Scripture alone (sola scriptura) with which to determine their doctrines. This has resulted in countless disagreements and widespread splintering into thousands of Christian denominations.
It is my hope that this booklet will help to dispel the myth of sola scriptura and be a useful instrument for helping Christians fully embrace the word of God.”

And he goes on to do this in giving his answers to the 20 questions that are answers in this volume. And those 20 questions are:
1. What is the “word of God”?
2. What is Sacred Scripture?
3. How do we know books make up the Old Testament and the New Testament?
4. What exactly is Sacred Tradition?
5. Is Sacred Tradition mentioned in the Bible?
6. Is there any evidence for Sacred Tradition actually being handed on from the apostles to their successors down through the centuries?
7. Where can we find a list of all the teachings given to the apostles by divine revelation and contained in Sacred Tradition?
8. Can Sacred Tradition contradict the Bible?
9. Doesn’t Vatican II say that Sacred Scripture—and, therefore, Sacred Tradition by association—is inerrant in only a very limited way?
10. I agree that Church Tradition has authority, but isn’t the Bible the only infallible authority?
11. The Catholic Church claims to be the guardian of the Bible, but didn’t it demonstrate hostility towards Scripture when it added unscriptural books to the Old Testament, namely the Apocrypha?
12. Isn’t the Muratorian Fragment proof that the canon of Scripture was settled long before the fourth century, contrary to what the Catholic Church claims?
13. If Church documents are sometimes infallible, don’t they in effect add to the Bible, in violation of John’s warning in Revelation?
14. Isn’t the Bible all we really need to evangelize the world?
15. Once the New Testament books were written down, didn’t this do away with the need for Sacred Tradition?
16. Maybe we needed Tradition before the biblical canon was finally decided, but after it was—after we know for sure what was Scripture and what wasn’t—shouldn’t have made Tradition unnecessary?
17. Didn’t Jesus say that any tradition that contradicts Scripture is false, meaning that tradition is inferior to Scripture?
18. Since Jesus commonly quoted Sacred Scripture in his disputes with the Pharisees and the Sadducees, doesn’t this prove that he saw the Bible as the sole rule of faith?
19. Doesn’t the biblical example of the Bereans prove that Scripture is the true rule of faith and Sacred Tradition is meaningless?
20. Does the Catholic Church emphasize Sacred Tradition so much that it makes the Bible seem unimportant? Isn’t that why the Church historically tried to prevent people from reading it?

Jim states: “In the Catholic Church, we refer to the apostles’ preaching, examples, and institutions as Sacred Tradition (or apostolic tradition) and their writing (including the Old Testament that they received from the Jews) as Sacred Scripture. Many other Christians believe that only the written Bible is the word of God. They see Scripture alone as the only definitive source of divine truth. Catholics, however, believe that God did not limit his revelation to a book; instead he gave his saving truth to mankind in two complementary and equally authoritative forms.” And that is the crux of the matter in this book, and in dialogue between Catholic and most other Christian denominations. It is also great that he draws from many protestant theologians to answer his questions. For example: “Today, many Protestants do not realize that their Bibles are lacking so much text that was originally included. However, anyone who studies the authentic history of the canon must admit that this is the case. As Protestant church historian J. N. D. Kelly writes, “It should be observed that the Old Testament thus admitted as authoritative in the Church was somewhat bulkier and more comprehensive [than the Protestant Bible] . . . It always included, though with varying degrees of recognition, the so-called . . . deuterocanonical books,” which are rejected by Protestants.”

One of the most powerful pieces in the book is chapter 5. For many Protestants focus on what they call the great commission, but do not read it in context. Jim declares: “Notice that Jesus did not tell the apostles to write down everything he had taught them. He simply commanded them to teach it. Much of this teaching later made its way into written form and became part of Sacred Scripture, but every bit of it was first—and still is—part of Sacred Tradition.” I have never really heard it explained that way and it immediately struck a chord with me and would have been great to know in so many conversations from the past.

Overall this is one of my favorite book in the series. It is an excellent read. Another amazing book in an incredible series.

This is the first book from Pauline that I can honestly say I was disappointed in. From the opening page I was apprehensive and that sense of unease only grew as I read the book. My son was really looking forward to reading this together after I finished previewing it. But I have yet to decide if he will read it. Now I need to e honest and state I am not a graphic novel expert. Every few years I read a few, some I love, some I like and occasionally there is one that I have issues with. This is one.

Now to be honest this style of art is not my favorite to begin with. But when you combine that with historical inaccuracies and also what I consider suspect story elements it was hard to keep giving the book more chances. My first major problem is on page 2, Saint Christopher's mother gores to pray at a statue of Mary because she has been married a number of years and has not had a child. I love that element of the story, but the statue has a modern Rosary hanging from Mary's arms. This statue and the Rosary are seen in a few different frames. The Rosary in this form would not be seen for almost 1000 years to the date from this date.

The next element of the book that really caused concern was a section where the Devil is attacking a husband and a wife. The wife pays and raises a cross to defend them. And then she screams at and intimidates her husband. Not fitting with the story or events.


This book was originally published by Pauline in Korea; the artwork is very consistent with a specific style that may be more fitting in a different culture. Manga as a whole is an import into North America and maybe something with this volume was lost in the cultural translation.

For the most part it is the retelling of a great saint's life. The overall story is pretty good. I am just on the fence about recommending this book. I am interested in this series, and loved the other book I read, but this one I am uncertain about.

 This is the 6th instalment in the 2017 Short Story Series by Barry Lyga. It all started last year after the US General Election. The next day Barry asked himself what he could do, and he decided to use his words. He is publishing a short story each month this year and donating the proceeds to the ACLU. You can read about why he is doing this here. For fans of Lyga's work or fans of great short stories it is a win win situation. Barry gets to do something. The ACLU gets the revenue. And we get to read some great short stories. That is the good news, the bad news is the short story is only available for one month. So you need to get it while you can. 

 Of the 6 stories released so far this year, this is the only one that was previously published. This story was available about 10 years ago through a sampler called Brookdale and Beyond. That sampler included samples of the 4 novels set in Brookdale. It also contained a preview of his forthcoming book Mangaman, and also included three short stories, including this one. The interesting thing is this was the first story set in Brookdale. And for fans of the Brookdale novels it is a special treat. 

 In the introduction Lyga states this story began its life around November 2001. And since that time there have been 5 novels set in the same fictional town named Brookdale:

Each of these books was a fantastic reads in their own right. A few of them make reference to pieces of this story in passing. But this was the story that started it all. Lyga states:

 "For now, though, this: When I wrote "Her Decade," I had a fledgling notion in the back of my mind that I would craft a set of interlinked short stories, with main characters in one story serving as background or ancillary characters in others, all of them crossing over into each other's worlds and lives. This idea was influenced by such diverse antecedents as William Faulkner's fictional Yoknapatawpha County and the shared universes of DC and Marvel Comics lore. There was no specific end-game to this notion - I just liked the idea of having my own fictional playground, where stories could unfold and speak to one another as necessary."

 This story does stand very well on its own. But it also helps provide some background to the Brookdale series.

 This story is written in a series of first person narratives. They could almost be journal entries. All from the same point of view, all dated May 20th starting in 1991 and going until 2002. It is the story of a mistake, it is the story of an unusual punishment and it is in part a story about reconciliation. Celebrating his 18th birthday a day early a young man kills a girl in a drunken driving accident. His punishment is to visit the grave on the anniversary for 10 years. He must visit the grace of Susan Ann Marchetti. As the date approaches so does his apprehension. For 10 years he must visit the grave of the girl he killed, on his own birthday. 

 This story packs a lot of punch. Buying this short story will help support freedom of speech in the US. But it also gives you an incredible short story to read.  So grab it while it is available.

Prayer of the Day
The Angelus

℣. The Angel of the LORD declared unto Mary,
℟. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace; the LORD is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.* Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

℣. Behold the handmaid of the LORD.
℟. Be it done unto me according to thy word.

Hail Mary, full of grace; the LORD is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.* Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

℣. And the Word was made flesh.
℟. And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary, full of grace; the LORD is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.* Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

℣. Pray for us, O' Holy Mother of God.
℟. That we might be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray,
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O LORD, Thy grace into our hearts; that, we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord.

℟. Amen.[17]

℣. Glory be to the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
℟. As it was in the beginning now and ever shall be world without end Amen.


Note: I only started praying this prayer regularly this spring. I have set a calendar reminder so I get emailed every day at 5 to 12 and pray it when I get the alert. I have similar prayer reminders for other prayers at different points in the day.
