Staplers
Z.E. McEvoy
Soliloquy for Grade 10 Media Arts 2026
They are made to hold things together but the second one wants to use it to hold themselves together its considered “a safety risk”
I’m not saying I want to staple myself up but I wish there was something like a stapler for people
One that could bind back the cuts in our minds
Or hold together all the thoughts to each other
But no,
There's not
So I sit here today
Talking to myself
Holding this plain old paper stapler that could be so much more if it wanted to be
Of course, that would be crazy
Why would the world make something to fix everything that they’ve broken
Everyone. Not things
We are not objects
People don’t “belong” to another person or thing
Except
we all do
we belong to the world
To the things that hold us back
To the things we won’t let ourselves let go of
To our dreams and fears
That’s what we belong to
So I guess,
If you think about it
We are like this stapler
Just an object sitting
Waiting to be used for it’s right task
Hoping the right person comes along
To use us in the right way
Treat us with kindness
Protect who we are
What we are
We spend so much of our lives helping others and losing ourselves
So I guess,
If you really think about it
We are like this stapler
Mending the cuts of others minds while letting our open up wider and wider
So I guess,
If you really really think about it
We are all just like this stapler
Organizing other people's thoughts and sticking them together
So that maybe they can have peace of mind
While we let our thoughts keep spiralling
Down
And
Down
And
D
O
W
N
But!
Maybe that means my wish has been made true
If we are all staplers for each other
Than maybe there something to bind back the cuts in my mind
And hold my thoughts together
I just need to find the right
“Stapler”
Note: My daughter wrote this for a school assignment and I really like it. It is posted here with permission.
