This series gets better and better. It has massive staying power. And in this volume we get a huge surprise! This is book 19 but we have reread a few of the volumes, making it the 29th time we have read a book in the series. As a family we eagerly await the new volumes that have been announced. And this volume returns to the illustrator Matt Loveridge. He has illustrated 4 books in this series now. Occasionally my youngest daughter will comment on a new illustrator, or switches between illustrators. She recognized Matt’s name and was very excited to see the pictures this time around. We have preordered the next 2 volumes, Howl of the Wind Dragon book 20, and Bloom of the Flower Dragon book 21. But back to this volume.

The description of this volume is:

“The evil wizard Astrid is ready to cast her dangerous False Life spell! To undo the spell, Drake and the other Dragon Masters will need the help of three special dragons -- including a Sea Dragon. So Drake, Bo, and Opeli travel to the island of Kapua to find one. But the Dragon Masters have stolen something from Astrid... And Astrid will battle them to get it back!

Matt Loveridge's exciting black-and-white illustrations bring the action to life in this thrilling series!”

And we agree about the wonderful illustrations, in a great story in a fantastic series. And the new dragon is magnificent. This story picks up immediately following the previous one. And Drake for the first time does something he knows Griffith would not approve of. My daughter reads through the chapter titles before beginning, and guesses what might happen. The chapters this time are:

The Wizard in the Bubble
My Spell!
Don’t Touch the Thorns!
Keep It Safe
Manawa
Enemies, Not Friends
Astrid Attacks!
A Hard Choice
Tricker!
Fire and Water
They Won’t Listen!
Save the Village!
The Big Wave
Peace at Last?
What’s Wrong, Worm?
A Feast

That is a lot of exclamation points at the end of chapter names. But they are well deserved. What an intense book. In this story they meet Manawa who does not call himself a Dragon Master but a Dragon Friend. He also has an Ahi stone which is different in shape than most Dragon Master Stones. Drake, Bo, And Opeli have given two tasks, to hide and protect one of the ingredients Astrid needs and to find and bring back the Sea Dragon. But that might not be as easy as in the past. And when Astrid shows up things go from bad to worse. But to find out if Drake and the others can complete their tasks you will need to pick up this book and give it a read.

These books are now below my daughters reading level. She can read through them quickly and easily. But she loves the stories and characters so much she wants to keep reading them. And even goes back and rereads some of her favorites by herself. And that is one of the things I love most about this book and the series.

Another great read in a wonderful series.
