A Light in the Darkness - David Vining - A Collection of Short Stories

A Light in the Darkness

This collection of short stories is my introduction to the works of David Vining. But it will not be my last. In fact, I already have three other offering by him ready to go on my eReader. I love a good short story and believe that writing clean crisp short stories is a very special skill. I have authors who’s stories I go back to time and again: J.F. Powers, Alice Curtayne, and Maggie Clark to name a few. This specific collection was published in May of 2018 with four other collections following closely. The description of this specific collection is:

“From Ancient Britain to the Amazon jungle to pre-history, follow five extraordinary tales as men and women find those little glimmers of light that comfort them in worlds that seem too large and too terrifying to truly comprehend. In this collection of short stories from David Vining, experience the adventure, wonder, and freedom that comes with discovering the keys to one's own freedom.”

And the specific stories in this collection are:
The Arberfall
Further Down
The Jewel of the Moon
To the Grocery for Flour

It was a very interesting collection with the stories being tied together by fire or light. Up until the last story I absolutely loved the collection. There are several F-bombs in the beginning of that story. And though they fit the story, it was such a surprise and contrast to the first four stories that I was literally taken aback. A form of the f-word appears in the first story which is an anachronism based on the rest of the story.

I loved the variety of stories, aliens, ancient Celts, memory and obsession. As far as the craft of short stories go these are very good stories. They span a wide range of styles and genres. David Vining exhibits true talent in this collection and I look forward to reading his other books that are available now and those that are yet to come!

If you are looking for a great collection of short stories to enjoy over a few days separately, or over a lar tea in an afternoon this is the collection for you.
