Serviam! - Philip Kosloski - A Practical Guide to Discerning God's Will

Serviam!
A Practical Guide to Discerning God's Will
Philip Kosloski
Philip A. Kosloski

This past year I read 5 books by Kosloski at this will be the fourth that I review. The first two on prayer, Basic Field Manual for Hearing God's Voice and 3 Methods of Prayer That Will Change Your Life were available from Kindle. The next three: Serviam, Distractions and Horarium are available only through his website. Each of these three are excellent reads. They are each short guides on specific topics of the spiritual life. But the themes that run through all of Kosloski's writings are prayer and discernment. Both are vital topics to anyone who wishes to be growing in their personal spiritual life, and in their witness to the world around them.

Many of us make hundreds of decisions every day. Many are trivial but again many are not. If we really want to make progress in our life either physically, spiritually or mentally we need to be making the correct small decisions over and over again. And yet so often we seldom really give them much thought.

The sections in this booklet are:
Introduction: The Journey of Discernment
I. Jesus, I Trust in You: Building a Firm Foundation
II. The Little Things: Following God's Will Every Day
III. In the Stillness: The Best Place to Discern God's Will
IV. Following the Good Shepherd: Characteristics of God's Voice
V. A Fork in the Road: Which Path Should I Take?
Appendix
i. Additional Resources

This book focuses on discernment for the spiritual life. And no matter what our spiritual calling; priest, religious, married, single we all must use discernment to live out that calling well.  As Philip Kosloski states: "There is no "once and done" when it comes to following God's will. It is a lifelong adventure, one that can take many unexpected twists and turns." So we should all be working at getting better at using our discernment!

Kosloski always writs in a clear crisp manner. I am sure he could fatten up his books and booklets. But instead he writes with an economy of words. And in doing so his books, and this one in particular are great resources. This book will help us to learn how to pay attention, to seek God's leading and to follow where he leads so that we are using our gifts and talents. Kosloski wrote this book not just to help us reach our eternal home of Heaven but to find joy in the journey there by learning to listen and be of service.

At the beginning of the second chapter Philip says: "The next step in following God's will (espeically in the "big" things, like vocational discernment for example) is by obeying God in the "little things" on a daily basis. If we are obedient in small things, we will be better prepared to follow God in the "big" things." And it is from learning to do the little things well and follow in them day in and day out that we will really accomplish good things for God. Phikip also has 7 points to recognise the voice of God and * for discerning the voice of Satan.

The list of resources in the appendix is also a great tool. For this booklet was well researched and written, but even with that some of us might wish to go deeper. Overall this was another excellent read from Kosloski and I highly recommend it!

A Kiss for Little Bear - Else Holmelund Minarik and Maurice Sendak - Little Bear Book 5

A Kiss for Little Bear
Little Bear #5
Else Holmelund Minarik
Maurice Sendak
Harper Collins
ISBN 9780064440509

My son seems to have fallen in love with the Little Bear Books. There was one in a box set we purchased last year and since that time he has bought himself a few more and read the rest from the library. But of all the little bear books this is the one he picks up most often to read, after as an extra after doing our normal reading for the day. But my son has shown no interest in other books by Else Holmelund Minarik when I have pointed them out at the library or the book store.

Unlike book 1 in this series this is a single story. As opposed to four separate stories each in their own chapter. But we also meet so many other characters that are not in the other stories. My son loves that the kiss keeps getting passed back and forth until it gets from Grandma to Little Bear. He also loved that Hen said no to a return kiss because it is so complicated. But the kiss does lead to a wedding and Little Bear and all his friends get dressed up for the occasion.

Any book that my children like to read over and over again is a winner in my books, especially since we are now at the point where my son can read this whole book to be. The little bear stories are really fun. These books are geared for young readers ages 4-8 buy can be enjoyed by younger and older readers. In fact I have read this even with my tween and she thought the story was fun.

The illustrations by Sendak are amazing and my son loves going over them again and again. They are good wholesome stories. I can really appreciate the sentiment in these books. I remember having read these book to my youngest brother many year ago and they are just as entertaining today.

A wonderful book in a great series!

The Strangers at the Manger - Lisa M. Hendey and Jenn Bower - Chime Travelers Book 5

The Strangers at the Manger
Chime Travelers Book 5
Lisa M. Hendey
Jenn Bower (Illustrator)
Servant Books a division of
Franciscan  Media
ISBN 9781632531001

Lisa M. Hendey is an editor and founder of CatholicMom.com she has written numerous books and contributed to a number as well. She has also written the forward to a number of other books. But this is the first book of hers that I have read, and it was wonderful. It was a little weird starting with the fifth book in a series but it was also a good test. For starting with this book  it was easy to determine that though there are references to earlier books, or at least events from them, this book stands well on its own!

The Brady twins Patrick and Katie have had some unique adventures after the family became more active in the parish of Saint Anne's, and specifically joined the cleaning team. The reason for joining the cleaning team might have something to do with Patrick's pet frog ending up in the baptismal font. (But alas that is part of another story.) For it seems that at certain points after hearing the church bells chime they have each travelled into the past. They then stay there until they learn a lesson. This book begins on the last day before Christmas break, as school is letting out the Brady twins notice a new family at the school with Fr. Miguel and Sr. Margaret. The newcomers are the Perez family and they do not look like anyone else at the parish. Patrick and Katie learn that the Perez's need a safe place to stay and are staying at the parish centre. While helping clean the church for Christmas service, the twins Chime Travel, the appear on a hillside outside a cave with a donkey braying nearby.

The children end up back in time at the first Christmas story. They meet Mary and Joseph as they travel to Bethlehem and join them on the journey. Over their time in the past they learn many lessons and start thinking about life back home in their own time. The children interact with a number of biblical characters, but most closely with Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. The children also meet the shepherds, the wise men, the visit to the temple, and more. When the Magi arrive, Katie asks Mary, “Are you sure you want all of these strangers around the baby?" Mary smiles. "Strangers are simply new friends, just waiting to be loved.” And that is a sentiment needed today. And once they are home their attitude and interactions with the Perez family change drastically. Overall it is a very moving read. It is a powerful story and really brings the Christmas story alive for kids and those who read to and with them.

The illustrations are a great addition to the story and Jenn Bower does a great job with capturing the sentiment of the book in the pictures. This book is a wonderful retelling of the nativity story and makes it very real. If the rest of the books in the series are as good there is some amazing reading ahead for the kids and me! And I hope that this is not the last in the series. Well done.

Missionary Handbook Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy - Michael E. Gaitley

Missionary Handbook
Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy
Michael E. Gaitley
Marian Press
ISBN 9781596143388

My introduction to Father Michael E. Gaitley's writing last year was his contribution to Beautiful Mercy edited by Matthew Kelly. Since that time I have read five books by him and plan on reading the rest. His writing style is very engaging. It is easy to read his books, his passion for the subjects of Marian Consecration and Divine Mercy are highly contagious. And in many ways this book is a synthesis of all of his other works. But in this small volume Father Gaitley pack's a lot of punch.

As is obvious by the title the main purpose of the book is as a Missionary Handbook, focusing on the Identify, Spirituality, Missions, Essential Formation, and Plan of Life for the Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy (MMDM). The book is available for free through their website you just have to pay shipping and handling.

The Sections in the book are:
Part One: MMDM Identity, Spirituality, Mission
The Basics
Level One Participation (M1)
Level Two Participation (M2)
Level Three Participation (M3)
Part Two: Essentials of Formation
The Super-Concept of Communion
Marian Consecration
Divine Mercy
Part Three: Plan of Life
Outline
The Details
Cheat Sheets
Conclusion: the MMDM Commitment

This book makes extensive reference to 5 of Michael's other books. It also Focuses on the HAPP Hearts Afire Parish-based Programs. In the introduction Father Gaitley states: "Alright, so whether you've already completed HAPP, read all the books, or are just getting started, whether you're already a Marian Missionary, want to join, or are still thinking about it - this handbook is for you. May it bless you during the present time of mercy for the Church and the world, a time of grace that we'll learn about in Part one." If you are already a fan of Father Gaitley's work you will love this book. If you have not done any of his book or DVD teaching series this book will be an amazing overview of his teachings. Having worked through two of his retreat books with groups I can say that any of his writings will enhance your spiritual life. But this booklet pulls it all together; the key prayers, the Plan of Life, the why. All bound tightly in fewer than 130 pages of text.

This book would also be great for anyone wanting a quick overview of Marian Spirituality. With specific focus on consecration to Mary and the Divine Mercy practice. This is an incredible book and as mentioned you can get it for free! So why would you not give it a read and see what impact it can have on your spiritual life!

Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church in a Year

Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church in a Year

About 10 years ago I wrote short reviews of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Second Edition, The Companion to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and Introduction to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and also the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. At the time I was a team of bloggers working through blogging the daily reading of the Catechism is you were working through it in a year, it was called the Catholic Catechism Dialogue Blog, and though now defunct it was a great pleasure being part of the project.

The Catechism can basically be read in a year if you read 10 sections a day. There are numerous resources online that give you reading plans that have this sort of list but I could not find any that did not also have a bible reading plan. The closest I could come up with was this list with links to the online version at the same site, A Solemn Charge. I have taken out the dates so it can be started any time.

So this year I am going to read the Catechism in a year. Why don't you join in and see how it transforms your faith?

September 13th 2017 Update: I finished the Catechism a little early moving on to reading the Compendium.

October 28th 2017 Update: I finished the Compendium moving on to reading the DOCAT Catholic Social Teaching for Youth.

November 17th 2017 Update: I finished the DOCAT moving on to reading the YOUCAT: The Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church.

I did finish YOUCAT and am starting over on the Catechism.

Pearl's Ocean Magic - Catherine Hapka - Dolphin School Book 1

Pearl's Ocean Magic
Dolphin School Book 1
Catherine Hapka
Scholastic
ISBN 9780545750240
ASIN B018EVB604

Catherine Hapka has over 30 distinct works and 10 series of books. She has books written under Catherine Hapka, Cathy Hepka, C.A. Hepka and also ghost written other books. And under those three names has over 100 books to her credit. But To be honest I had not really heard of her, prior to reading this book and this series with my youngest daughter.

Now to be honest my daughter loves these books. I was a little less impressed. They were in a section at the book store with numerous books my daughter can read. But these books were way beyond her capabilities. I do normally enjoy reading with my children. But I found this book in particular and the series in general a little lacklustre. There was nothing in the story or characters I could hold onto. My daughter loves the covers but the illustrations in the actual book are pretty sparse.

The story is OK. It is about a young dolphin heading off to school for the first time. Pearl is heading to Coral Cove Dolphin School. She soon hooks up with a group of 3 friends. In the series the dolphins use telepathy to guide other ocean animals to help protect them. But there is a school bully Mullet and he tries to intimidate Pearl's friend Flip to do dangerous dares. The plot got a little scary for the intended age. But in many ways it was a typical school story.

When an author is cranking out 10 books a year maybe it is hard to keep up the standards. Or maybe this book was more flash in the cover than substance in the book. From where I sit as a parent it was disappointing even if my daughter enjoys them. I was hesitant to buy this one but my daughter had her own gift card I really wish I had encouraged her in a different direction. It feels like it is trying to capitalise on the popularity of Finding Nemo and just doesn't pull it off.

I give the book 3 of 5 stars because my daughter wanted to see it through but if I had been reading it to review it would have ended up in the 'did not finish pile'.
