Judy and Stink Moody are some of my favorite characters. These books are wonderful reads. I have read 14 books in these series now and each one was entertaining and a fun read. These are books I will read with my children over and over again. And in this book Judy is on the case.

The chapters in this book are:
Who's Who
The Case of the Bothersome Brother
The Mystery of the Missing Moose Mice
The Secret of the Stolen Spectacles
The Search for the Buried Backpack
The Mystery of the Missing Mr. Chips
The Case of the Dog-Bone Bandit
The Case of the Troublesome Toilet
The Secret of the Suspicious Sandwich
The Case of the Curious Cookie Crumbs
The Case of the Kissing Canine
Judy Moody and the Mystery of the Missing Mood Ring

Judy Moody has become addicted to Nancy Drew books. She is trying to work her way through the original novels but also makes mention of the graphic novel series. Judy gets Stink reading the books also. Judy has become Judy Drewdy, girl detective. She has made her super-stocked backpack and is finding mysteries all over the place. Judy, with her best friends Rocky, Frank and Stink, is trying to solve mysteries, especially the mystery of the missing police dog. This was another great read in an amazing series!

Emma's Emu - Kenneth Oppel and Kim LaFave

Emma's Emu
Kenneth Oppel (Author)
Kim LaFave (Illustrator)
Fitzhenry & Whiteside
ISBN 9781550415247

This book is a First Flight Book. The First Flight Leveled readers are geared to grade levels - Level 1 - Pre-School, Level 2 - Grades 1-3, Level 3 - Grades 2-4 and Chapter Books Grades 3 and up. This volume falls into that last category. These books are designed to match reading development and are geared for specific skill levels. But the great thing about this book is you can read it to younger children and they will love the story and as they get older it will be right on track for them to read for themselves.

Kenneth Oppel is a Canadian icon when it comes to writing. With over 25 books published, from picture books to adult thriller, he has done it all. This chapter book for young readers is awesome. The story is fantastic, the illustrations fun and the quirkiness of the combination makes it a great read.

Emma enters contests, every contest she can - cereal box, gum, comics - you name it, she enters and she has never won. Then one day she gets a letter saying she has won the grand price and it will be delivered tomorrow. To her surprise it is not riding lessons, not a chemistry set, not encyclopedias, it is a large bird. She finds out it is an Emu but what is she going to do with it, and how is she going to keep her mother from finding out? Read the book to find out the answer!

The Black Book of Buried Secrets - 39 Clues - Rick Riordan

The Black Book of Buried Secrets
The 39 Clues
Rick Riordan
Scholastic
ISBN 9780545285049

This book is different from any of the other books in the 39 Clues Series I have read. It is almost a handbook or manual on the 5 branches of the Cahill family. It is also the only book that is not available as an eBook out of all the books across the three series. That being said, it is a beautiful book, every page is glossy full color.

The book, as mentioned, has a section for each of the 5 branches of the family. Each section has a history of the founder, current members, key past members, and profiles of some active agents. It is a wonderful companion book and gives a lot of background information on people, places and events key to the clue hunt, current and historical. It is also a good pivot piece between the original 39 Clues series and the second Cahills VS. Vespers. Of all the books and series I have read, I am amazed at how much this one has kept my attention across the original series and the Rapid Fire short series. And I eagerly look forward to reading the second series. I just wish it was available in eBook for quick search and reference while reading the other books.

Mangaman - Barry Lyga and Colleen Doran

Mangaman
Barry Lyga (Author)
Colleen Doran (Illustrator)
Haughton Mifflin Harcourt
ISBN 9780547423159

Even though I am a huge fan of Barry Lyga's writing, this story took me by surprise. The philosophical underpinnings will keep your mind working long after you finish the book. In fact, I read it through twice in one sitting and know I will be going back and reading it again in the near future. It is the story of two teenagers. Ryoko and Marissa meet at a party. But Ryoko is from an alternate world that resembles out manga. He comes from a two dimensional world where the marks of the illustrator are real and now they follow him around our world. But he realizes that even though he comes from a world we would interpret as a story, that maybe our world is full of box frames and we just do not realize it. It a cross between eastern mysticism and religions, and a western, that all collide as the story takes place.

I have already told about a dozen people about this book and they were all just as intrigued as I was. The story is amazing and the illustrations wonderful. But what gets you most, is the essence of it. You will find yourself thinking about it long after you finish. It is an incredible story by an amazing author and a very talented illustrator!

The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt - Megan McDonald and Peter H Reynolds

The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt
Judy Moody and Stink Moody
Megan McDonald (Author)
Peter H Reynolds (Illustrator)
Candlewick
ISBN 9780763643515
eISBN 9780763658618

It's interesting - this is the first of the two cross-over books that is equally a Judy and Stink Moody book. It is awesome! Usually, in the other two series, the rivalry is a little more antagonistic. Yes Stink and Judy are brother and sister, and push come to shove they will support each other, but always with a little teasing and poking fun. In this adventure, they team up and are working together to solve the clues to find the Pirate Treasure to win a Gold doubloon by collecting sixteen pieces of eight. Their main competition is two other kids they saw on the ferry, Tall Boy and Smart Girl. The chapters are:

Artichoke Island
Mad Molly and Scurvy Stink
Tall, White, Shiny Bright
Winkin, Blinkin, and Secret Codes
-... .-.. .- -.-. -.- -... . .- .-. -..
Sign of the Pirate
Hours and Glasses
Crabby, Crabbier, Crabbiest
Going for the Gold

This book was a wonderful read. It was great fun watching the Moodys working together and race around the island gathering clues, solving puzzles and enjoying a vacation. The story is wonderfully written; it is the first book with color illustrations and it has a very different look and feel because of that - something that sets it apart from the separate series of Stink Moody books or Judy Moody books. It makes these ones different and makes them something special. Another great read by McDonald and Reynolds.

Project Dad: The Complete Do-It-Yourself Guide for Becoming a Great Father - Todd Cartmell

Project Dad:
The Complete Do-It-Yourself Guide for Becoming a Great Father
Todd Cartmell
Revell

ISBN 9780800719999

I have read this book twice and am now working through it for my third time. It is amazing; it will be a great tool in your arsenal as a Christian Father. In the introduction Todd states:

"Five key Areas

Let's review the main point so far: God is building a dad, and that dad is you. And God's plan is for you to be a great dad for the kids he has entrusted into your care. Five key areas are essential for becoming the great dad God wants you to be and that your children need you to be. To help you remember each area, I've connected each one with a body part, because as my wife keeps reminding me, guys think with their body parts. Here they are from the bottom:
  • Your eyes - how you look at your children
  • Your mouth - how you talk to your children
  • Your heart - how you connect with your children
  • Your hands - how you act toward your children
  • Your feet - how you lead your children

In the following pages, you will learn how to:
  • look at your children in a way that will help them see the reflection of who God made them to be in your eyes;
  • talk to your children in a way that will nurture them and shape how they learn to think about themselves;
  • connect with your children in a way that will open them up to the lessons and wisdom they need to learn from you; and
  • lead your children along the path God has laid out for them and protect them from the pitfalls and traps the enemy has laid ahead of them."

He does it through the following sections:

Part 1: Your Eyes - How You Look at Your Children
1. Who Are Those Little People? (And Why Are They in My House?)
2. There's a Prize Inside
3. What Are You Looking For?
4. Every Day Makes an Impact

Part 2: Your Mouth - How You Talk To Your Children
5. When Dad Talks, Who Listens?
6. Send a Message
7. Watch Out for Hazards
8. Your Secret Weapon

Part 3: Your Heart - How You Connect with Your Children
9. "Hello, My Name Is Dad"
10. Connect through Respect
11. Listen and learn
12. Connect as a Family

Part 4: Your Hands - How You Act toward Your Children
13. Be a Coach
14. Save the Picnic
15. Find the House
16. Discipline with the End in Mind (Not That End)

Part 5: Your Feet - How You Lead Your Children
17. Follow My Lead
18. The Friendship Factor
19. Draw the Line
20. Wanted: Great Dads (Superheroes Need Not Apply)

As he works through each area, he shows us tools to apply the changes that he believes we need to make to be better fathers. As we work at becoming better fathers we will also become better husbands and better men. There is much that any father can glean from this book and apply to their interaction with their children and with others. The only real drawback is that often Todd is self-deprecating to the extent that it detracts from the book. There were times I put it down rather then keep reading when he started it. I know it was intended as humor and to show that he works on these things also but for me it detracted from the great material being presented. But over all, I would state it is a great book with a lot of good advice and practices.
