Run, Rose, Run - Dolly Parton and James Patterson

It has been a long time since I have read a volume that already had over 125,000 reviews on Goodreads. I actually picked this one up to meet a Goodreads summer challenge. I had heard of it but had not read the description. And I remember my father’s fondness for Dolly. After reading the description I decided to give it a go. The description of this novel states:

“From America’s most beloved superstar and #1 New York Times bestselling author James Patterson comes a thriller about a young singer-songwriter on the rise—and on the run—and determined to do whatever it takes to survive.

Every song tells a story.

She’s a star on the rise, singing about the hard life behind her.

She’s also on the run. Find a future, lose a past.

Nashville is where she’s come to claim her destiny.  It’s also where the darkness she’s fled might find her.  And destroy her.

Run, Rose, Run is a novel glittering with danger and desire—a story that only America’s #1 beloved entertainer and its #1 bestselling author could have created.”

AT the time of writing this review there are 57 editions of this book listed on Goodreads and it is available in a dozen languages. I have not read anything By Patterson, nor have I read anything by Parton. I sure did hear a lot of Parton’s music growing up. And have seen numerous film adaptions of Patterson’s novel. I read this volume over several sittings over 2 days. It was hard to put down. I really enjoyed the characters, the ploy and the themes presented in the novel. And older star giving an up and comer a chance, and some assistance. A young man with a secret and a troubling past. A young woman pursuing her dream, but also hiding big secrets. And numerous confrontations and threats. The beginning reminds me of Lethal Weapon

The characters are well written, and you will find yourself pulling for them. There are numerous songs written through the novel and at the end we are given the lyrics to them all, and Dolly released an Album with them. I think it was a very entertaining read, and good summer read. If the two collaborated on another thriller I would easily pick it up. And if the film that has been optioned is ever released I would give it a go.

A good solid read. I am glad I gave it a try.
