This is the 18th story by Jane Lebak I have read in the last few years. This one is very different from everything else I have read from her pen. And I greatly enjoyed it. This mighty be a short story, but we can only hope it is a piece in a new universe of Lebak’s creation. For I know the story has left me wanting more. In many ways it feels like a pilot episode for a new TV Series. Great characters, great story, epic appear and reach. All in a tightly written package. The description of this novella is:

“Something’s shooting down shuttles when they try to land on the surface of Pluto.

After an invisible force annihilates two shuttlecraft in rapid succession, the humans at Pluto Station find themselves pitted against a weapon they can’t see. Every time it fires, the weapon gets stronger, until it’s targeting anything heading in-system. Meanwhile, their resupply freighter is on approach, carrying all their food and equipment for the next three months. Its destruction will mean starvation.

The only humans on our solar system’s outer rim have just days to identify whatever hangs in the space between Pluto and Charon—and then either disable it, or else destroy it.”

The interplay between the characters, the groups and factions is wonderful. It sets up a world and environment much like on the series Babylon 5. I absolutely loved this story. Writing short form fiction is a very different art than the novel. And Lebak writes great short stories. And this foray into the Science Fiction is executed wonderfully.

I give it a very solid 5/5 stars. And really do hope there will be more books in this universe.
