According to a BBC pole these are the actual Top 200 Favorite Books in the UK. I have tagged those I have read with this schema:

Argh - LOTR at the top! I couldn't get through 5 chapters of that without giving up...and I tried and tried and tried. I've read quite a few of those lately - maybe around 30-40 - the best of which for me was undoubtedly Heller's Catch 22, which I loved and immediately read a second time!

In a way it shouldn't surprise mem but it does, that I loved so many of the perceived classics...I really thought I wouldn't.
