A Reason for Everything - Amy Welborn

A Reason for Everything
A Short Story
Amy Welborn
Watpad

Since 2012 I have read over dozen volumes from the pen of Amy Welborn. With every book I read, the more I respect her skill, her talent, and her sharing of the Catholic faith. This story is a little different, in that it is being published at Watpad. It is one of four stories Welborn has started there. Some have yet to be finished and have not been updated in a few years. This one is an excellent read. Over the years I have greatly enjoyed Welborn’s non-fiction, but I am finding that her skill and craft at fiction is exceptional as well.

This is a moving little story. A mother and daughter on vacation after the passing of husband and father. The two keep running into a person focused on social media, likes, follows and the such. Two passages that specifically spoke to me were:

“Him being dead.

He's here in spirit, I know it.

Really, I feel it, and I'm sure you do to.

And to be here right now in all of this beauty? Such a comfort, right? I can imagine.

I can't imagine.

It had seemed like a good idea at the time, this slipping into his space, assuming that because his space had been our space for twenty years, it would still be. The whole charade, I realized, was an attempt to trick myself into thinking he was still here.”

And also:

“She jumped up and did something else she hadn't done in a while, something so out of character since third grade, I'm thinking. Throwing her arms around me and holding me tight, she whispered, "Aren't you glad we're here? I am. So glad we're here."

Yes?

"Thank you, Mom."

Don't thank me. I thought. For how else had she ended up here in this happy, surprising place? Thank your dad. The guy who died.”

A great little story about death, grief, family and more. I highly recommend it.
